We returned to the megatower. Lily flew us up one at a time. She said she could manage both of us at once but there would be less to grip on and flying is scary enough.
“Someone didn’t make the bed,” Lily said, reunited with her flat after a night in the cells. “Did you two hook up last night?”
“No!” we said together.
“I was just asking,” Lily said, feigning innocence.
“It was Harry who didn’t make the bed,” Alice joked.
“That is bullshit,” I laughed. “She slept in the bed. I was on the sofa.”
Lily fell back on the sofa and spread herself out wide. She was still in the prison jumpsuit. “We’re such a good team. How did we manage to talk our way out of that?” she said.
“What do you mean, how?” I said, still coming to terms with the sacrifices we made. “We promised our souls to eternal damnation when we die, and you’re getting killed the next time you’re here.”
“It sounds more depressing when you put it like that,” Lily said, yawning.
“Meredith isn’t very nice,” Alice said.
“She never liked me.”
“She let us leave pretty easily. She changed her mind so quickly that there’s got to be more to it,” I said.
“What’s the deal with you and Serena?” Alice asked. “She was a wreck by the end.”
“I don’t know. She was there the first time I woke up here. She’s protected me ever since,” Lily answered. “It’s going to be a mess down here for a while, but she will be okay. She will try and reform the council, and none of them are strong enough to kill her on their own.”
“So, we’ve got what, a couple of years at best until your soul stealing kills me?” I said. “We’ve got to figure this out as soon as possible.”
“We will do that,” Lily assured me. “Cat first though. You two should cover your ears.”
We did as she said. She walked to the window and opened it, before unleashing a bloodcurdling scream into the twilight sky. It sent chills down my spine, even through the blockage. “What the fuck was that?” I said, and she laughed.
“He’ll be back soon.”
“I felt tingles in my fucking teeth,” I said, which only made her laugh more.
True to her word, there was a scratch at the door within a couple of minutes. Lily answered, and scooped up a creature that was ghostly white, with red markings on its neck and at the tip of its three tails. “Hello, pretty,” she said, stuffing her face into its fur as it licked one of her cheeks. She turned our way after they had reunited, and showed him off to us. “This is Scully. See? He’s a cat, sort of. Pretty much a cat.”
