We were only a few corridors away from the cells. All of them but Lily’s were empty. She was behind bars, but the cell itself wasn’t as bad as I imagined an underworld cell to be. She had a bed, sofa and desk. There were a few water bottles on the desk, and some leftover food. It didn’t look like prison food, but more like a takeaway box, with a couple of chopsticks poking out the top.
Lily jumped up from the bed when she saw us approaching. “Are you okay?” she asked, reaching a hand out between the bars, though I kept myself out of touching distance. “Does your head hurt?”
“It’s fine,” I said. I could feel a little pressure and swelling around the eye, but it wasn’t too much of an issue.
“I’m happy you’re back together.”
“We just met with the elders,” I said.
“Serena?”
“Yeah, she was there.”
“What happened?” Lily asked.
“Do you know her? Is she good?”
“She’s been good to me.”
“Meredith was there as well. She doesn’t seem happy with you. There was a guy as well. I can’t remember his name.”
“Malachorio,” Lily said.
“What’s the point in him being there?” Alice asked.
“There always needs to be an incubus on the council. He gets a vote, but that only really matters when the two succubus council members are opposed to one another. Serena and Meredith are usually aligned, even if they go about it in different ways.”
“They want me to testify against you,” I said, breaking the seal on a conversation I didn’t want to have. “The plan is to keep you in the underworld. No more summonings, no more escape attempts, a lifetime down here and no chance of freedom.”
Lily’s face dropped. She sat down on the edge of the bed, and took a deep breath. “I didn’t think Serena would do that,” she said, meekly. She looked more timid than ever before, as if the colour red was going to drain out of her. “What are you going to do?”
My heart was pounding. She looked at me with something that resembled hope in her eyes, or maybe it was desperation. “They said that if you were successful in escaping with part of my soul, I would have died. Is that true?”
Her expression told the whole story, and her lip quivered before she spoke. “It’s true.”
“Then why shouldn’t I leave you here?” I said, the anger clear in my tone. Alice stepped in behind me, and tickled the low of my back with her fingernails. It was easy enough, given the crop top.
“I told you this isn’t who I am. I need to get away to find answers.”
“So you kill me?”
“That’s why I try to get away before we become friends. If everything went to plan then I would find out the truth before you got sick, and return your soul to you as soon as I had my own back. It’s better if we never become friends for that reason. I wouldn’t hurt someone that I care about.”
“But you would kill the next one. I’m angry that you tried to hurt me, but the worst part is how excited you are talking about your next chance. It doesn’t matter how much you love and care about Zach or Bethany, and maybe even me, it doesn’t stop you from praying for the day you get another chance to run away. It doesn’t matter who it is. One day you’ll kill someone. I can’t give you that chance. It’s not for my sake. It’s for them, whoever they are.”
Watching her shrink as my anger grew more vicious hurt the soul that I had left. I stepped closer to the cell, biting at her with every word. Alice tried to comfort me, taking hold of an arm and holding me tight. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry!” Lily shouted over my words, before covering her ears to hide from the rest.
“I wanted to set you free. I wish there was a way to do that without hurting someone. I can’t trust you to do that. They told me you’re a demon, born here like the rest of them.”
“It’s not true!”
“What’s the real answer then?”
“I don’t know,” she said, jumping back to her feet and closing the gap between us. Her eyes were bright red, burning with a fury that matched mine. There was little between us but the bars. I could feel her warm breath in every word. “I am human. You promised that you believed me. I can see it in my dreams. Flashes of a different life, every night. The same moments over and over again, but they were real and I know it. You have to believe me.”
