I woke up in a blindingly white room. My head was resting on something soft. It took a few attempts to get my eyes open, but the feeling of a soft hand on my face brought me back to life. I sat up in a panic, escaping the comfort. Alice looked back at me, her expression a mixture of relief and worry.

“Alice,” I whispered, falling back into her, and holding on for dear life. “I’m so sorry.”

“It’s okay, Harry,” she hummed back, her fingers stroking the back of my head. “I’m fine. Are you okay?”

“I think so,” I said. One of my eyes felt a little numb. I reached up to touch it, and came away with a little blood on the tip of my finger. “What happened here?” I asked.

Alice backed away, and rested the pad of her thumb just below the cut. “They put you to sleep but no one thought to catch you. Lily was very mad about it.”

“Where is Lily?” I asked. “Is she okay?”

“I don’t know. They brought you here and then took her away.”

I was worried about Lily, but I trusted she could look after herself. She was sad she had to come back home, but she had never seemed worried or scared about it. I was just relieved to have Alice back, and that she seemed to be in one piece. “I’m so sorry about this. It’s all my fault. Are you sure you’re okay? Did they tell you what’s going on?”

“They explained what they knew,” Alice said. “They told me about Lily and what she is, and that this was just a case of mistaken identity.”

“I can’t believe this happened,” I said, still holding onto her wrist like there was the risk of losing her again. “I was just about to tell you everything. I swear that I was going to tell you everything and then that guy came out of nowhere and took you. I thought you were dead.”

Alice hugged me again. “Don’t worry. We’re both alive and they said they can send us back.”

I melted into her, and took a moment to compose myself, my heart rate slowing. “What the hell are you wearing?”

Alice laughed. “It’s a dressing gown, and you’re one to talk!” she said, standing up to show me. It was a thick, cosy looking garment, about knee length, and as white as the rest of the room we were in. I forgot that I was practically wearing a baby tee. “I was naked when I woke up. I thought it was a dream at first. I still do, a little bit, to be honest. I woke up on that table and then they gave me this. They said they kept me out for as long as they could, so it wouldn’t hurt as much. I met with a few different people but they haven’t let me out of here for anything else.”

I stood up. It looked like we were in a conference room, with a long, oval shaped table at its centre. There were a few chairs dotted around, too few for the table. The only other furniture was the sofa I had woken up on, my face resting on Alice’s lap. “It’s not a dream. I wish it was, for you at least. You didn’t deserve to go through all of that.”

“I can’t believe you came to get me. I’m pretty sure this is hell.”

“It’s not hell,” I said, remembering I had said something similar to Lily. “They call it the underworld. Lily thinks it’s a form of the afterlife, but not the only form of afterlife there is, if that makes sense. I’ve asked her a lot of questions and sometimes I get it and other times I just nod and pretend that I get it.”

“I was doing that the first time they explained what was going on.”

“Do you know how long you’ve been here? I don’t understand how time works here.”

“I’m not sure. Not too long, or I would have gone crazy. I have slept a few times though, so it’s probably days more than hours.”

“Time moves crazy here. Hopefully they can send us back to when we left, or it’s not going to be easy to explain,” I said. That was a problem for when we made it back home. I didn’t have the time to stress about it at that moment. “It seems like there’s not much to do here,” I said, and that clearly extended to the human prisoners.

We were interrupted by the door, a single incubus stepping in. “You’re awake. That’s good,” he said. “You’ll be meeting with the elders shortly, and then you will be returned home. Mr Whitaker, may I ask you about something?”

This incubus was another I didn’t recognise, and he was the smallest yet, barely 5 foot tall. “Uhm, yeah, I guess,” I said.

“Did Liliana talk about me? I mean, did she mention me while you were together?” he asked, with hopeful eyes.

“I don’t know your name, sorry,” I said, and he laughed.

“How silly of me. I’m Tim.”
