The burning sensation felt endless. There was no pathway or portal, no concept of time and no sign of Lily. There was nothing to see or hear or feel but the flames. I don’t know how long it lasted. It hurt so much that I couldn’t even process that I was falling, the darkness beneath me never ending.
I returned to consciousness bathed in the same agony, but this time with something beneath my writhing, naked body. The floor was cold and harsh on my skin, but everything else felt worse. Every breath felt starved of air, dry and hoarse and falling apart before it could fill my lungs.
“It’s about time,” said a muffled voice. Just opening my eyes was excruciating. I saw a pair of legs step closer and then squat down in front of me. It was Lily. “Do you realise how stupid you are?”
I tried to talk, but it came out as one long, raspy cry.
Lily put her arms under my body, and effortlessly lifted me up into the air, before dropping me onto something softer. “You fell off the sofa. Sleep some more if you need it,” she said, stroking my hair. It hurt so much that I recoiled, making her jump. “Sorry. The first passage isn’t very nice. I could have told you that if you asked to come with me. I would have said no, but you’re an idiot, and now...”
Her voice drifted into nothing as I passed out, and the burning continued.
The next time my eyes opened, the pain was more subdued. Everything ached, but that was preferable to what came before. I was still warm, my skin inflamed in red patches and covered in sweat. There was a blanket over me, which was now damp.
“Lil-ugh,” I croaked, calling out for her.
She came running in, and pushed a glass against my lips. “Drink,” she said, tilting it slowly as I chugged away. “How do you feel?”
The drink brought life back to my throat, but I still needed more. “I think I’m alive.”
“You could have died jumping into my spell like that.”
“I had to do it,” I said, preaching to a choir who didn’t particularly care about my hero complex. “I couldn’t let you do it on your own.”
“You’re an idiot, that’s what you are.”
I tried to sit up, and she helped me the rest of the way when it got difficult. I tossed the blanket aside, blinking quickly as my eyes adjusted to the light in the room. “Where are we?”
“This is where I live.”
“Your house?” I asked, looking around. I didn’t have the mental strength or focus to really take in what I was seeing.
“It’s more of an apartment.”
Lily was dressed, which surprised me. I really just assumed they walked around naked down here. My brain was not operating at its maximum, but my instincts kept reminding me that I was there for Alice. “What do we do now?” I asked.
“I don’t know where she is, but they must know we’re here. They will come and get us before too long. For now you can recover and clean yourself up. I have some clothes for you, and you can take a shower if you want.”
“You have showers?”
“We have water. What do you think you just drank? We do have civilisation and culture, you know. We try to at least, even in this hellhole. I know as much about how all this came to be as you do about your world.”
I knew about evolution and religion, though whether that was the answer for this realm was beyond my comprehension. “A shower would be nice.”
Lily’s apartment was nice, if a little small. She explained that everyone had a place to live, even if this was a prison of sorts. She didn’t know the population of their little corner of the underworld, but she did know that every apartment was the same, and there were dozens of apartments on each floor.
“Which floor do you live on?” I asked.
Lily took me to the window. We were so high that the ground was barely decipherable. It was fairly dark, though there was a red glint shining through the streets below. “228th floor,” she said. “There’s at least 100 floors above this, and that’s before the restricted levels.”
She explained that her apartment building was the only one they had access to, so every succubus and incubus had a place to themselves here. The building was massive, the centrepiece of their district, and the rest of their civilisation existed within a few kilometres in each direction. They couldn’t stray beyond it. It really was a small world, even if the megastructure at its heart was the size of a city on its own.
“Long journey in the lift each morning,” I joked, but she spread her wings in response. It really was second nature now, seeing her like this, because it barely crossed my mind that she was in full demon mode. She still looked like me, or the soul of my twin, so she hadn’t returned to the body she often used when she was in the underworld.
“Do you just fly in through the window?” I asked, and she nodded.
“There’s a way in on each floor,” she said, confirming. “You flew in that way too. We didn’t arrive back here, safe and sound. We came back down there,” she continued, pointing at the city below. “I was in a bad mood with you but figured I couldn’t leave you down there. Sorry to say it, honey, but you slept through your first time flying.”
“Thanks for saving me,” I said.
“We had such a heartfelt goodbye for nothing,” she moaned, before showing me to the shower. It was a three room apartment, with the living space and her bedroom taking up the other two. The shower options ranged from hot to scalding hot. I settled on the lowest setting, and washed away a lifetime of sweat.
