Lily had woken up by the time I returned, and she was in full demon mode. The first thing I heard after getting in the front door was a scream, and then an apology. I rushed upstairs to find her stretching out her wings, showing them off to my mother.
“Is everything alright?” I asked, though there didn’t seem to be much reason to panic.
“Yeah, she just didn’t expect to see me like this,” Lily answered. Mum was holding a coffee close to her chest, eyes fixated on the demon in front of her. “Sorry again.”
“Don’t apologise, sweetie,” Mum assured her. “Better to walk in on you like this than naked, right?”
“Depends what you’re after,” Lily joked. I hoped she was joking.
“You are absolutely incredible,” Mum said, her eyes washing over every inch of the woman in front of her. “I’ve never even heard of summonings like this.”
“It doesn’t happen very much,” Lily said. “It’s fun though. It makes me feel more alive.”
“Well, I hope he is looking after you, because you’re clearly extra special,” Mum said. What did she even mean by that?
“I am here, you know,” I said. Both of them turned to look at me for a moment, before mutually ignoring me.
“Are you settling in nicely?” Mum asked.
Lily nodded strenuously, really trying to emphasise her point. “Yes, thank you,” she said. “I’m so thankful that you let me stay. Harrison is really looking after me and we are already great friends.”
“You’re not a bad actor, sweetie, but we heard you having sex. And you,” Mum said, looking at me. “I summoned her for moral reasons, blah blah. I know how this works and won’t be pretending otherwise.”
It was a little bit embarrassing, but my parents were clearly trying to make me feel at ease about this whole thing, and forcing myself to feel awkward about it instead wasn’t going to help anybody. Lily was grinning from ear to ear behind my mother. She didn’t have much interest in lying. “Okay, sorry,” I said, and Mum nodded.
“Good. That’s settled then. Do you want any breakfast?”
I lifted the plastic bag in my hand. “I bought some stuff for us,” I said, and she nodded again.
“Okay, darling. See, you’re looking after her. That’s my boy. I’ll leave you both to it.”
Underwear wasn’t the only thing Lily had forgotten to buy on her shopping spree. The concept of pyjamas had slipped both of our minds, so she had once again slept in a pair of my boxers and an old t-shirt. Of course this t-shirt was now burned because she was wearing it when she sprouted her wings. I got over it, because she looked good. There was something about her wearing my clothes that was sexy to begin with, and getting sexier each time she did it. It was as if she felt a little bit more like she was mine, not contractually, but a part of me. Like a girlfriend, basically, even if this was destined to be a brief fling.
“Your mum is hot,” Lily said, snapping me out of my ogling.
