The Jama Masjid swallowed them into its vast courtyard, red sandstone burning under the morning sun. Priya walked ahead, her hips swaying beneath the deep red fabric of her kameez, and James followed like a man tethered to her movement.

She showed him the prayer hall’s enormous arches, the marble inlay work that caught light in patterns he couldn’t begin to understand. Her voice carried the history effortlessly, Mughal emperors, centuries of worship, the call to prayer echoing across Old Delhi.

He listened, but mostly he watched her. The way her hands moved when she spoke. The way her tongue touched her teeth on certain syllables.

“Your mind is elsewhere, James.” She’d caught him staring. That knowing smile curled at the corner of her mouth.

“Just taking it all in.”

“Mmm.” She didn’t believe him. She turned and led him down the steps, past vendors selling cold drinks and prayer caps, into the warren of streets beyond.

The rest of the day passed in a blur of color and noise. Chandni Chowk’s narrow lanes packed with bicycles and handpulled carts. The spice market where pyramids of turmeric and chili powder burned his eyes. A halt at a tiny shop where an old man pressed fresh sugarcane juice through a rusted press, the liquid sweet and green and cold.

Priya knew everyone. The fabric seller who called her beta and pressed a length of silk into her hands. The chai wallah who refused payment when she stopped at his stall.

She moved through Delhi like she was part of its bloodstream, and James found himself grateful for the access she provided, not just to the city, but to her.

By late afternoon, the heat had become oppressive. They sat in the shade of a banyan tree in Mehrauli Archaeological Park, watching peacocks pick their way across ruined stones.

Priya had bought them both mango lassis from a cart, thick and sweet, and she licked a drop of yogurt from her thumb with deliberate slowness.

“You haven’t asked me why I’m really here,” James said.

“Should I?”

“Most counter-intelligence agents would have already.”

She turned to face him, those light eyes catching the dappled shade. “Most counter-intelligence agents don’t spend three days following a man before deciding he’s not a threat.”

“You’ve decided I’m not a threat?”

“I’ve decided you’re not a spy.” She swirled her lassi. “At least, not the kind I’m looking for. You move like a man who’s learned to be invisible, James. Spies want to be seen just not caught. You don’t want either.”

The observation landed somewhere in his chest, uncomfortable in its accuracy. She was good. Better than good. He changed the subject.

“What happens now? You report back that I’m harmless?”

“I report back that you’re a retired accountant who enjoys architecture and mango lassis.” She smiled. “Unless you give me a reason to report otherwise.”

The day wound down through Qutub Minar’s towering minaret, through the quiet gardens of Lodhi Garden where couples sat close together on benches. By the time the sun began to sink orange behind the city’s skyline, James’s feet ached and his shirt clung to his back with sweat.

“Let me take you to dinner,” he said. “As thanks. For everything today.”

Priya considered him for a long moment. The evening light caught the gold in her eyes.

“There’s a place. Karim’s, in Old Delhi. It’s famous for its kebabs. Not touristy, but close.”

“In Delhi, everything is close,” he said.

Her laugh was low and warm. “You’re learning.”

Karim’s was chaos incarnate, a narrow restaurant packed with bodies, waiters weaving between tables balancing steel platters laden with sizzling meat. The air was thick with smoke and ghee and the unmistakable scent of charcoal-grilled seekh kebabs.

They squeezed into a corner table, their knees brushing beneath the worn wood. Priya ordered without looking at a menu.

“Galouti kebabs, chicken tikka, butter naan, and the mutton burra. Enough for sharing.”

The food arrived in waves. The galouti kebabs were so soft they dissolved on his tongue, spiced with cardamom and clove and something he couldn’t name. Priya tore off pieces of naan with her fingers, dipped them into the rich gravy, and ate with the focused pleasure of someone who knew exactly what good food should taste like.

“You’re not eating enough,” she said, pushing a kebab toward him. “This is the best meal you’ll have in Delhi. I promise.”

He took a bite. She watched his face, waiting for his reaction. When his eyes widened, she nodded with satisfaction.

“I told you.”

Dinner stretched into dessert, kheer in clay cups, fragrant with saffron and pistachio.
