The phone rang at 6:47 AM, the sharp trill cutting through the Toronto morning like a blade. James Blackwood reached for it from the warmth of his bed, already knowing what it would be.

Six months since Moscow. Six months since Natasha.

The line crackled, a voice he recognized but couldn’t place reading off the time and flight number.

New Delhi. He’d never been to India. The thought settled somewhere between his chest and his stomach, a mix of anticipation and something quieter. Photographs of the Taj Mahal at sunrise. Spice markets thick with cardamom and saffron. And the possibility of more, always the possibility of more.

Natasha’s face drifted through his mind unbidden. That thick accent curling around English words like warm honey. The way she’d straddled him in that Moscow hotel room, her dark hair falling like a curtain around them both. “James,” she’d breathed, and even now the memory of it sent a pulse through him.

The KGB had sent her to break him. Instead, she’d spent nights showing him exactly what a trained seductress could do with a man’s body. He could still feel the phantom heat of her skin, the way her hips moved in slow, torturous circles while she watched his face with those knowing eyes. Maybe I’ll get lucky again.

The flight was fourteen hours. He slept through most of it, waking only as the wheels touched down and the cabin filled with the rustle of passengers preparing to disembark.

Indira Gandhi International Airport was chaos personified, bodies pressing together, voices layering in Hindi and English and a dozen other languages, the heavy musk of humanity hanging in the recycled air.

James moved through it like water, unremarkable as always. Five foot seven, salt-and-pepper hair, clothes that had never been fashionable and never would be. An accountant’s posture. A face you’d forget thirty seconds after seeing it. That was the point of him. That was why the CIA kept sending him places.

Here, though, something felt different. He felt watched. The sensation crept along his spine as he waited for his luggage. A prickle at the back of his neck. James had spent decades cultivating invisibility, and he’d learned to trust the small, animal voice that whispered when that invisibility cracked.

He adjusted his glasses, glanced around the carousel with the bored expression of a man whose life contained nothing more exciting than spreadsheets. No one looked back. Still, the feeling persisted. Followed him through customs. Lingered as he collected his bag and headed for the exit.

Somewhere in the crowd, a flash of dark hair. A woman, maybe. He caught only the impression of her before she disappeared into the press of bodies.

Maybe I’m getting paranoid in my old age.

Delhi swallowed him whole. The city was an assault on every sense, car horns blaring in endless symphony, the acrid bite of diesel exhaust mixing with the sweetness of marigolds and the earthiness of street food frying in oil.

James checked into his hotel, a modest establishment in Karol Bagh that smelled of incense and old carpet. The room had a view of a crumbling wall covered in movie posters. A ceiling fan creaked overhead, stirring the humid air without actually cooling it.

He was here as a decoy. That was his role. A former accountant turned professional distraction, sent to draw the attention of counter-intelligence while the real operatives slipped through the cracks. It was absurd really, the idea that anyone would find him interesting enough to follow. But the feeling persisted.

The next morning, he took breakfast at a small cafe down the street. Chai in a clay cup, warm and sweet and spiced in ways Toronto could never replicate. He read a newspaper he couldn’t understand, watching the street through the window as men on bicycles wove between rickshaws and beeping scooters.

And there she was again.

The same flash of dark hair. The same suggestion of a woman, always at the edge of his vision, never quite visible. The cafe window reflected the street behind him, and for a moment, just a moment, he caught her reflection. Long dark hair. Light eyes that seemed almost luminous against her brown skin.

She was good. Very good. But James had spent years learning to see the invisible. He finished his chai, paid, and stepped into the chaos. The heat hit him like a physical force. He walked without direction, letting his feet carry him through narrow lanes and crowded markets.

Behind him, barely perceptible, the rhythm of her footsteps matched his. Stopped when he stopped. Started when he started.
