Roran Greymane

On the third floor, Greymane stopped before her door.

He had already been here. An hour ago. But then he had come officially—as a hunter engaged by the Church, with the right to ask questions and nothing more. Then it was she herself who interested him, not her door. Then he had not looked at the lock. Had not assessed the protection. Had not thought about how to get in.

Now—he was thinking about it.

An ordinary wooden door, upholstered in cheap iron, with a simple pin lock—the kind installed in every tenement for poor students and minor clerks. Nothing special.

He sniffed. Carefully, professionally, without attracting attention. From under the door of the neighboring apartment drifted a faint, barely perceptible smell. The half-elf. Sibielle. Home. Or had been home. The scent was fresh but not sharp—not cooking, not moving, just sitting. Maybe reading. Maybe sleeping. It did not matter.

She did not interest him. That was not why he had come. Breaking into the neighbor’s place—unnecessary risk, unnecessary noise, unnecessary witnesses. If need be, he would return later. With a warrant. Or without. But not now.

He listened. Silence. No footsteps, no voices, no creaking floorboards. Only somewhere below, on the first floor, water muttered dully in the pipes.

He took out his picks—thin, steel, bent at the necessary angles. Light in the hand. Familiar. He had done this hundreds of times. Thousands. Entered homes, basements, offices, bedrooms. Everyone he needed to. And now—he needed to as well.

He was already inserting the first into the keyhole, and in his head the familiar, habitual picture was already unfolding: he enters, finds what she is hiding, brings her to her knees before the tribunal, wipes that predatory, knowing smirk off her face—

And at that moment the lock exploded with magic.

The blow was instant and brutal.

Magic burst from the lock like a snake from its hole, striking his fingers, his arm, his whole body with a discharge of such force that Greymane was thrown back against the opposite wall, slamming his back hard against the plaster. White flashed before his eyes, his ears rang, and his right arm went numb from fingertips to shoulder, as if it had been dipped in boiling oil and then yanked out and thrown into ice. The picks fell from his numb hand and rolled across the floor with a quiet clink. His teeth ached, and the taste of blood filled his mouth—he had bitten his cheek when he flew into the wall.

Damn it ... he cursed silently, slowly rising and rubbing his bruised shoulder. Strong. Very strong. And smart.

He looked at the door. Ordinary. Cheap. Iron, wood, a simple lock. But the protection ... the protection was not for a weak mage girl. Such spells are set either by masters or by those who can afford a hired artificer. The amulets should have reflected the spell—but they had not. Which meant the protection stood above her rank. Far above. Either someone had helped her. Or she herself was stronger than she appeared.

Who taught you that? he thought, picking up the picks and stuffing them back into his pocket.

He cast a glance at the neighboring door. The half-elf had not come out at the crash. Had not peeked out. Had not asked what had happened. Either she was asleep, or she had decided not to get involved.

That’s right, pointy-eared bitch, he thought with cold satisfaction. Safer that way.

He leaned his back against the wall, closing his eyes. Ordinary methods would not work here. He needed something else. Something an old hunter had taught him years ago, when he was just starting out and could not yet tell a vampire’s trail from a werewolf’s. The old man had hated this method. Said it was for those who did not know how to work properly. But he had taught it. Because he knew: one day it would be needed.

Mental aura substitution.

A rare skill. Few hunters knew it. Those who did kept it secret. Because it was not merely a skill—it was an intrusion into the very essence of another’s “I.” Repulsive. Humiliating. But effective.

To enter her room, he had to put on her aura. Not become her—he could not and would not become her. Simply put it on. The way one puts on someone else’s skin to slip into a lair. The way one pulls on someone else’s face, someone else’s voice, someone else’s scent—and walks, knowing that at any moment the mask could slip.

For a man who hated mages more than life itself, there was no greater humiliation.

You must, he told himself, feeling his jaw muscles work with fury. You must do this to catch her. To prove she is the thief. To bring her to her knees. For that, you can endure. For that, you can even put on ... her.

He closed his eyes and pictured her again—but now not as an enemy, but as a shell. It was agonizing. It was like stripping naked in the cold, like forcing yourself to drink poison, knowing it would not kill you at once but would burn you from within for hours. His own aura—heavy, beastly, male—resisted, thrashed in panic, refused to submit. Greymane felt his essence scream, dig in, claw at his ribs from the inside, begging him to stop this perversion. But he could not stop. He had to put her on. A mage. A woman. A bitch.

He inhaled deeply, relaxed the muscles of his face, neck, shoulders. He imagined his own aura—grey, heavy, with an admixture of the beastly, the male, the crude—beginning to curl into a tight ball somewhere in his solar plexus. And then—slowly, carefully, millimeter by millimeter—unfolding anew, but different. Alien.

He remembered her. How she had stood in the doorway, barefoot, in a translucent robe, with tousled hair and dilated pupils. How she had smelled—ozone, heated stone, and something else, deep, moist, that had made him clench his fists to keep from snapping. How she had moved—smoothly, fluidly, like a cat that is not afraid of being hunted because she is certain the hunter will become her prey.

He remembered her aura—dense, saturated, with a high concentration of mana that he had not felt in anyone in his entire career. And over that—a faint but distinct imprint of demonic power. She was a demonologist. He knew that anyway—from her dossier. She had transferred to demonology a year ago. Officially. With the Academy’s permission. So the demonic trace in her aura was not evidence, but merely confirmation: yes, she practiced. Like hundreds of others.

Her magic settled on him like a wet sheet over his face—not letting him breathe, making him choke on alien sensations. Thin, sharp as a razor. Disgustingly alluring. Like poison that is sweet on the tongue but burns from within. And that only made his hatred for her more ferocious. Because to hate the one whose skin you have pulled over yourself is to hate yourself. And he had hated himself for a long time.

It became hard to breathe. He felt as if he had been stuffed into someone else’s skin—too tight, uncomfortable, smelling of perfume and magic. He had not become her. He had simply put her on. But even that burned more than any magical defense.

Endure, he ordered himself, feeling sweat flood his eyes and his legs buckle with weakness. Endure, because otherwise you will not enter. And if you do not enter, she will get away. And you will never prove that she is the thief. That she is the creature that must be destroyed.
