The golden morning sun filtered lazily through the loosely drawn curtains, scattering across Miya’s small, cozy apartment in myriad dancing motes of dust that swirled in the air like tiny golden moths. Little had changed here over the past six months—except for the addition of a large full-length mirror in an elegant silver frame, standing beside the bed.
Miya had bought it in the third week after that night, without bothering to explain to herself why. She simply knew she wanted to see herself—all of herself, completely, without shame, without that light but persistent embarrassment that had once made her avert her gaze from her own reflection in the bathroom. Now she looked into the mirror every morning—and found not a single flaw worth regretting.
Miya stretched slowly, shaking off the remnants of sleep, and her body arched on the silk sheets with that fluid grace that cannot be trained—it is either there or it is not. A faint, barely noticeable half-smile played on her lips, and in her green eyes, still heavy with sleep, there was no trace left of that frightened, uptight student who had trembled half a year ago before a circle drawn in charcoal, not knowing whom exactly she would summon from the Abyss.
That Miya had died that night. Or, more precisely, burned away—in the arms of a demon, on the windowsill of an open window, beneath cries that still sometimes surfaced in her memory and made her freeze mid-lecture with a wildly pounding heart.
Sometimes, waking in the middle of the night, she still felt him. The weight of his tail on her thighs. The scent of ozone and mint. The taste of his seed—burning like lightning, sweet as sin. She would wake with her heart pounding wildly, and between her legs it was wet—not from sleep, but from memory. On such nights, she hated him. And wanted him. And knew she would never find a replacement.
Over these six months, she had blossomed so much that every man at the Academy turned to watch her—from first-years to gray-haired professors, who, however, diligently pretended not to notice her allure. Her skin had become pearl-white and seemed to glow from within—a faint, barely perceptible radiance that no illusion spell could conceal. Her hips had rounded, her slender waist had grown more graceful still, her breasts a little fuller, and every morning, looking into the mirror, Miya found something new in her reflection that she had not noticed before.
But the main thing—she had fully, unconditionally accepted her body. She no longer wrapped herself in the long, shapeless cloak she had once worn to avoid attention, no longer shrank beneath the gazes of others, lowering her eyes and pretending not to care. The night with the High Demon had burned all the shame out of her, leaving in its place a pure, predatory confidence in her own irresistibility—and a dangerous, intoxicating feeling that now she was permitted everything.
She had achieved everything she had dreamed of, and more. In six months, Miya had soared to the very top of the Academy’s rankings, passing the senior examinations externally, causing the instructors genuine bewilderment bordering on panic.
All of this, of course—thanks to Kron’s books, those very folios she had ordered from the demon in exchange for her body, not suspecting at the time that her innocence and inexperience had long since ceased to be something valuable to her. Miya had quickly understood how subtly and cynically the demon had played a joke on her, and that joke had made her respect Kron even more.
You played it well, demon, she sometimes thought, leafing through the pages of her copied notebooks, and a light, almost tender smile touched her lips. You gave me not what I asked for, but what I needed. But I am not offended. In the end, I got even more than I had counted on.
Sex with living men, unlike with demons—that was a separate, sad, almost comical chapter of her new life.
Over these six months, Miya had honestly tried to find a replacement for that transcendent, all-consuming, utterly devastating feeling that the Abyss had given her. But reality turned out to be cruel, even insulting.
First, there was a promising upperclassman who had been circling her even before the theft, persistently suggesting they “study together in the evening.” In bed, he turned out to be a fussy, selfish boy—puffing and grunting for a few minutes, thinking only of himself. He had clearly memorized a couple of positions from cheap novels and reproduced them mechanically—without spark, without genuine desire—and finished before Miya had felt anything at all, leaving behind a feeling of mild disgust and emptiness.
Then, yielding to recklessness and the desire to test—What if I just got unlucky?—she shared a bed with a young, stately magister who so languidly rolled his eyes during lectures, discoursing on the theory of magical flows. He turned out to be an arrogant blockhead, intoxicated by his own status and by the proximity of a student who surpassed him head and shoulders in academic performance.
Worst of all, during the lazy, insipid caresses after sex, this schemer smoked a cigar, blowing smoke at the ceiling with the air of a master of the universe, and casually—trying to make it sound offhand—inquired: “My dear, where did you get such phenomenal density of magical core? What methods do you use? Would you not share them with your professor?”
After that, Miya quit for good. Mortal men seemed to her insipid, boring, and predictably nauseating—they used sex either for their own ego, for self-affirmation and proof of their own importance, or for espionage, trying to ferret out her secrets and appropriate them for themselves. None of them wanted her—neither her body, nor her mind, nor her soul. They wanted her success, her power, her suddenly risen star, onto which they tried to leap.
They wanted her. All of them. But none of them wanted her. They wanted her body, her power, her success. They wanted to take—but to give nothing in return. With Kron, it had been different. He had taken everything—but he had also given everything. He did not pretend. He did not lie. He was honest in his cruelty. And that was liberating.
It was simpler and safer to manage on her own than to be disappointed again and again by the next candidate, who turned out to be a copy of the previous one—with a different face but the same set of instincts and ambitions.
Sometimes, of course, when she desperately wanted simple, no-strings-attached physical warmth—without attempts to probe her magical reserve or gain access to her notebooks—she shared a bed with her roommate: a sweet, carefree half-elf who adored kissing and asked no unnecessary questions. But that was a tender, affectionate aesthetic—tickling instead of bites, champagne instead of fortified wine—pleasant, but incapable of satisfying that deep, dark, almost animal hunger that had settled somewhere at the base of her spine after the night with Kron.
That was precisely why she had spent nearly three weeks creating an artifact she was genuinely proud of—no less than her academic achievements, and perhaps more, because this artifact had been made for her, and no one else could use it.
