The festival had been a raging success. A week of music, food, cars, and rides had finally wound down.
For most of the city, that meant tomorrow the lights were coming down, vendors were packing their last cases into trucks, and the streets were slowly returning to something resembling normal. For Marcus, it finally meant the end of an overtime shift that had stretched far beyond what anyone had originally scheduled.
He’d spent most of the evening patrolling the edges of the festival grounds, directing traffic, breaking up the occasional argument, and keeping an eye on the handful of people who had decided the night wasn’t over simply because the official event was.
By the time he finally clocked out, the streets were still sticky with spilled drinks. Paper cups and food wrappers skittered along the gutters in the warm night breeze. The last stubborn clusters of festivalgoers wandered toward parking lots and Roovers, laughing too loudly and moving with the aimless energy of people who weren’t quite ready to admit the evening was over.
Marcus wasn’t ready for bed but he wanted a chair, a cold beer, and preferably ten minutes without somebody arguing with him.
Most of the bars and restaurants downtown were already closing.
The Iron Peg wasn’t.
Marcus pushed through the door with his latest trainee on his heel. He hadn’t been able to ditch him.
Kenith pronounced with a soft lisp he insisted on, was twenty-three, bright-eyed, ambitious, and so eager to please Marcus, that he’d spent most of the shift hovering at Marcus’s side. Every time Marcus reached for something, Kenith offered to get it. Every lull in the night somehow became an opportunity to ask another question. He kept finding reasons to stand too close, or offer to handle the paperwork so his training officer could “relax.” Marcus had let him. The kid was useful, and Marcus suspected that later he would be even more useful on his knees.
Marcus had learned to recognize that particular kind of enthusiasm.
Useful, if exhausting.
He held the door open behind him.
“Come on.”
Kenith followed him inside.
The Iron Peg was nearly empty.
The festival had drained most of the late-night crowd, leaving only the familiar smell of old wood, spilled beer, and whatever the kitchen had cooked hours earlier. Low amber lights glowed over the bar, reflecting off the bottles behind it. The jukebox was silent for once, and without the usual crowd, the place felt almost peaceful.
Corby was already cleaning up.
He stood behind the bar, wiping down the last few tables with the tired efficiency of someone who had performed the same closing routine so many times he could probably do it with his eyes shut.
At the back table, Galen was already settled into their usual spot.
He looked entirely too comfortable.
Marcus spotted the young man sitting at his feet and slowed for half a second.
He was young, early twenties, red-haired, and apparently new to the world of pup play. The new leather pup mask still sat slightly crooked on his head, the gloves looking stiff and unfamiliar on his hands. He shifted restlessly on his knees, clearly still adjusting to the gear. Galen’s fingers rested possessively in his hair. He was still getting used to the particular clothes and accessories that came with the scene, looking a little stiff and uncertain as he shifted in his seat. Galen seemed completely unbothered by it, offering the occasional quiet word of encouragement.
Corby glanced up.
The moment he saw Marcus, his tired expression broke into a grin.
“Oh wow what a fucking honor. I guess I lose our bet Galen. I thought it would be six months to a year before you graced this place. Its only been three.”
“Eat a dick Corby. You are such an ass. I was working OT and needed a drink.”
“The festival? How bad was it? Cause its been crazy here.”
Marcus dropped into a chair with a groan and rolled his shoulders.
“You have no idea.”
Corby reached for a bottle before Marcus even asked.
“Beer? Or shots too.”
“You know me too well. But lets go with the good shit up top.”
“I like to think I know my friends well.”
Corby set the bottle in front of him.
Kenith remained standing for a moment, apparently waiting for instructions.
Marcus looked up at him.
“Sit.” He barked.
Kenith immediately pulled out the chair beside him, practically vibrating with the need to be useful.
Corby snorted.
“You train all of them this obedient?”
“Only the ones who want to graduate.”
Kenith smiled, a little too eagerly.
Corby looked the trainee over and smiled.
“You know kid, you really wanna make him happy, then know Marcus here is a big o massage slut. Rub the right muscle and he will get mushy.”
“Fuck Corby.”
The eager trainee jumped up and started massaging Marcus’ neck, shoulders and back.
Galen glanced over from the back table.
“New one is real keen?”
“Unfortunately.”
“Hey,” Kenith said.
Marcus took a drink and finally felt some of the tension leave his shoulders.
“Kenith.” He put a soft, exaggerated th on the end. “He’s been with me a few weeks.”
Kenith’s ears went pink. “Motht people just call me Ken. Or Kenny,” he muttered, the lisp slipping out when he got flustered.
Marcus looked at him, unrepentant. “Not me. To me you’re Kenith.”
Galen’s mouth curved. “Kenith,” he repeated, matching the soft th perfectly. “Welcome to the Peg.”
Corby leaned on the bar, grinning. “Yeah, Kenith. Nithe to meet you.”
Kenith moved to hide behind Marcus and didn’t try to correct anyone again.
“Galen you just gonna hide in the corner or are you gonna drag that puppy over here to play?”
“Fine! This here...”
Galen nodded at the pup. “ ... is Earl. He’s still learning. I got him from this leather daddy who was using him as a urinal for the last year. It really likes being pissed in, which is convenient. But his owner wants him to be mobile, so we are wirking on public exposure. The mask and gloves are new — he’s fighting them a little.”
The brief exchange settled naturally into the comfortable rhythm Marcus had always found at the Iron Peg. No reports. No radios. No supervisors. No one asking him to explain why something had happened or what he planned to do about it.
Just people who knew him.
Corby tossed the rag over his shoulder.
“Night’s almost done. Give me another ten minutes and I’m locking the doors.”
Marcus nodded.
“Works for me.”
Corby studied him for a moment.
“You bitch, you’re gonna make me ask. OK. Are you staying long enough to catch us up on Malik’s adventures, or are you just here to parade your cute trainee and disappear?”
Marcus leaned back, letting his gaze move briefly around the room.
“I’ve got time,” he said.
He took another drink and settled deeper into the chair.
The dinners were no longer just a weekly thing.
They had started that way—one evening a week, something simple and manageable. Then one dinner became two. Two became three. Before long, nobody seemed to remember who had decided Malik should come over again the following night.
It simply became routine.
Malik would finish his shift at the car wash, close his laptop after another evening of online classes, or occasionally come straight from his second job. He would walk the short stretch of cracked sidewalk to the Blacks house and find the front door already unlocked.
Skye was usually waiting for him.
The moment Malik stepped inside, she was there to greet him, taking his jacket, asking about his day, following him into the kitchen while he talked. She had developed a habit of finding some small reason to stay close to him whenever he was in the house, fingers hooked in his belt loop, cheek against his shoulder, body angled toward him even when she was supposed to be setting the table.
The more often he came, the less everyone seemed to remember that he had once been an outsider sitting carefully at the edge of their family table.
Now he knew which chair squeaked.
He knew where Cheryl kept the wine.
He knew Jesse preferred the quieter side of the table.
He knew exactly how long Vernon could tolerate a conversation before finding an excuse to leave the room.
And he knew that every member of the household had begun responding to his presence differently.
Skye’s attachment had become the most obvious.
She was always looking for his attention, always finding some excuse to draw him aside or steal a private moment with him. She wanted reassurance. She wanted certainty. More than anything, she wanted to know what she meant to him. She texted him nude pictures between shifts, close-ups of her tits or the wet seam of her pussy with captions that were half plea, half promise. Some afternoons she showed up at the trailer before dinner, already dressed (or barely dressed), and asked him to mark her. A handprint on her ass. A bruise on her throat. Anything she could carry back into the house under her clothes. Other times she asked him to leave her wet on purpose so she would have to sit through the meal aching and empty.
Malik never quite gave her the answer she wanted. However he did have some fun. One night in the kitchen he finally pushed further than before.
He stripped her naked while he stayed fully dressed, and pinned her against the counter the way he had done many times before. Instead of using his fingers he freed his long thick cock, already hard, and rubbed the thick head up and down her soaked slit, catching her clit on every stroke. He didn’t push inside. He just used himself like a toy, slow and deliberate, until her thighs shook and she started begging out loud.
“Please—please make me yours, I’ll be so good, just fuck me, just claim me, I’ll do anything—”
He kept rubbing until she came hard, squirting against the underside of his cock and down her own legs. When it was over she slid to her knees, still naked, and pressed her face to the front of his jeans like she was trying to thank him with her mouth. He let her stay there for a minute before he grabber her hair, pulled her head back and simply bounced his hard cock on her face over and over. Spattering her skin with her juice and his thick precum. Only after her face was streaked and red did he help her up as he told her to get dressed. She did it without argument, eyes glassy and devoted.
She begged and cried for his big cock. For him to fuck her.
Not yet.
He had learned that uncertainty kept her coming back.
But Jesse’s change was different.
Quieter.
And, in some ways, more important.
The board-game night had been the turning point.
Malik had noticed the unopened box sitting on the shelf and suggested they play a round. Somehow, the four of them had ended up around the table while Vernon retreated to the couch to watch the national curling finals.
At first, Jesse had barely spoken.
Then Malik made a stupid mistake.
Jesse corrected him.
Malik argued.
Jesse laughed.
It was a small laugh, almost surprised to hear itself.
But it was the first genuine one Malik had heard from him.
After that, Malik started making a point of including him.
If Jesse began to disappear into the bedroom, Malik would call him back.
“Come on. One more round.”
Sometimes Jesse stayed.
Sometimes he didn’t.
Malik never pushed.
A few nights later, he taught Jesse a simple two-player card game. Another evening, when Jesse seemed particularly down, Malik suggested they step outside for some air.
They walked halfway down the block.
They didn’t talk about the breakup.
They didn’t talk about Wolferton U.
They didn’t talk about his father or the house they’d lost or the life that had disappeared almost overnight.
They talked about nothing important.
That seemed to help more than anything else.
Slowly, Jesse started coming back to life.
He stayed at the table longer.
He began asking Malik what they were playing before dinner was even finished. He started offering him the better chair without being asked. Sometimes he lingered in the kitchen after everyone else had gone.
The lost expression he’d carried since everything fell apart was still there.
It just wasn’t there all the time anymore.
Near the end of the fifth week, Jesse caught Malik alone by the front door.
“Hey.”
Malik turned.
Jesse stood there with his hands shoved into the pockets of his hoodie, staring at the floor.
“What’s up?”
Jesse hesitated.
“Do you think...” He stopped and tried again. “Sometime, could I come hang out at the trailer?”
Malik studied him.
“Just hang out,” Jesse added quickly. “Not dinner. I mean, dinner’s fine. I just thought maybe...”
He shrugged.
“Maybe I could come over sometime.”
Malik understood what Jesse wasn’t saying.
“I’ll think about it,” Malik said.
Jesse nodded too fast, ears pink.
“Yeah. Okay.”
He disappeared toward the bedroom before Malik could say anything else.
Malik watched him go.
One more piece had moved.
Then there was Cheryl.
She had changed, too.
But unlike Jesse, she hadn’t become quieter.
She had become bolder.
The wine still appeared at dinner, but the bottle lasted longer now. Her old habit of drinking her way through the evening had begun to fade, replaced by a sharper awareness of everything happening around her.
She paid attention to Malik.
Too much attention.
