It was a Saturday in the middle of the day when the rented box truck finally turned onto the cracked street in Scalehaven and groaned to a stop in front of the small two-bedroom.
Vernon was out of the cab before the engine finished dying.
He slammed the door, stretched his stiff back, and stood in the middle of the narrow driveway like he was still on a loading dock somewhere important, barking directions at the two movers climbing out behind him.
“Come on, come on. We ain’t got all damn day.”
The movers exchanged a quick look but said nothing.
They’d already spent the better part of the morning riding around with Vernon in the cab, listening to him complain about traffic, the neighborhood, the truck, the weather, and practically everything else that had crossed his path.
At least they were finally here.
The rest of the family had arrived nearly two hours earlier.
They had been waiting ever since, scattered around the small property with varying degrees of irritation. Cheryl had claimed the tiny front porch almost immediately, wine in hand. Jesse had spent most of the time sitting in the family’s car with his earbuds in, occasionally getting out when someone told him to. Skye had disappeared somewhere nearby for part of the wait, returning only when she was hungry or bored enough to remember the move was happening.
Two hours of waiting had done nothing to improve anyone’s mood.
Now that Vernon had finally arrived, the real chaos could begin.
The truck’s back door rolled up with a metallic clatter that carried farther than it should have. Boxes, a sagging couch, a scratched dining table, and a mattress still wrapped in plastic started coming out in a disorganized stream.
“Watch that corner!” Vernon shouted.
One of the movers stopped.
“Which corner?”
“The damn corner I just told you about!”
The mover looked at the box in his hands, then at the doorway.
“Right.”
Cheryl was already back on the tiny front porch with a fresh glass of wine in her hand. The box sat open on the railing beside her. After two hours of waiting, she seemed to have accepted that the afternoon was already lost.
Jesse moved boxes when told to, but every motion was half-hearted. He kept his head down and his earbuds in, the picture of a twenty-year-old who would rather be anywhere else.
Skye did not touch a single box.
She stood on the sidewalk in sunglasses and a crop top, phone in one hand, and announced to no one in particular that she was not risking a chipped nail for cardboard and bad furniture.
“Skye!”
She didn’t look up.
“I said get over here and help!”
“I heard you.”
“Then get your ass over here.”
She glanced at her nails.
“I’m not carrying boxes.”
Vernon stared at her.
“Why the hell not?”
“Because I just got them done.”
She turned and walked away before he could answer.
Vernon muttered something under his breath and waved the movers toward the house.
The noise drew the neighborhood the way a car wreck does.
Curtains shifted. A few people stepped out onto porches. An older man two doors down stood with his arms crossed and openly laughed. A woman across the street shook her head and went back inside.
Most of them watched just long enough to understand what kind of people had arrived, then turned away.
Scalehaven had seen families fall before.
This one was just louder than most.
By the time the truck was half empty, the street had already decided to ignore them.
Skye announced she was going for a walk.
She said it loud enough for Vernon to hear, already turning away from the half-unloaded truck, phone in hand. No one tried to stop her. Cheryl only lifted her wine glass in a vague toast. Jesse didn’t even look up.
The “walk” lasted less than a minute before the camera was rolling.
Skye held the phone out in front of her and started narrating in that bright, bitter voice she used to use for her followers.
“So this is the new chapter, everyone. Dad lost the job, we lost the house, and now we’re in Scalehaven. Which is a very polite way of saying the part of town where people go when they’ve run out of better options. Super humble. Very character-building. Love that for us.”
She panned across the cracked street, the thin pines, the row of older trailers and faded ranch houses. Her tone stayed light. The smile on her face did not reach her eyes.
Then she stopped.
Halfway down the block, outside a small trailer with a sagging awning, a man was bent over the open hood of an older sedan. Shirtless. Dark skin shining with sweat under the midday sun. Lean muscle moved across his back and shoulders as he worked. A clear treasure trail ran from the bottom of his chest straight down into the low waistband of his shorts. The shorts themselves sat low enough that the tops of his hip bones showed.
Skye’s thumb moved on its own.
She zoomed in.
The comments started stacking almost immediately.
*damn who’s that*
*new neighbor??*
*he’s fine as hell*
*zoom in more*
*shirtless in the driveway at noon is crazy*
*ask him his name*
*I’d let him ruin my life*
Skye’s follower count for the stream sat around two-fifty and climbing. She kept the camera on the sexy stud while she answered in that same bright, performative voice.
Skye glanced at the rising heart count and the flood of thirsty comments, a familiar spark of the old influencer high flickering back to life.
“Okay, okay, I see you. Yes, he’s real. No, I don’t know his name yet. Yes, he lives right here in my brand-new glamorous neighborhood. And before anyone asks — I just got here, I haven’t even talked to him.”
More comments flooded in, thirstier than the last ones. Someone asked if she was going to introduce herself. Someone else told her to walk closer. A few just posted fire emojis and sweat droplets.
Skye licked her lips, still filming, and took one slow step toward the trailer.
Skye lowered the phone just enough so it still caught both of them, then put on her brightest smile.
“Hey. You need a hand, or are you one of those guys who gets offended if a girl offers?”
Malik straightened up slowly, wiping his hands on a rag. Up close he was even better — lean muscle, dark skin shining with sweat, the treasure trail disappearing into low shorts. His eyes flicked over her once, quick and obvious: the way the crop top clung to her tits, the short shorts that barely covered her ass. Then they settled on her face, calm and unreadable.
“I’m good,” he said. His voice was low, even. “Just a busted oil hose.”
Skye stepped closer, angling the phone so the camera still had him. “I’m Skye. We just moved in. The loud ones with the truck.” She laughed like it was a joke. “Sorry about the noise. My dad thinks he’s still running a company.”
Malik’s mouth twitched, not quite a smile. “I heard.”
She tilted her head. “You heard?”
