Katy had never flown first class before.
She sat in a wide leather seat that reclined into something closer to a bed, sipping sparkling water from a real glass, watching the clouds scroll past the oval window. The Sterlings had arranged everything. The car to the airport. The first-class ticket. The car on the other side. A text from Jon that morning: Wear something comfortable. We’ll handle the rest.
She’d taken her time getting ready. Low-cut jeans that sat on her hips, a fitted white crop top, white sneakers. Her blonde hair pulled up into a high ponytail that swung when she moved. Full makeup, because Katy didn’t believe in showing up plain for anyone. Smoky eyes, glossed lips, just enough blush to make her look like she was already flushed.
Her phone buzzed as the car pulled up to the hotel.
We’re in the lobby. Come find us.
Katy grabbed her small overnight bag, took a breath, and walked in.
The lobby was the kind that made you feel like you were already being judged. Marble floors, massive floral arrangements, a chandelier that probably cost more than her parents’ house. Two doormen in pressed uniforms. A concierge desk that gleamed.
She saw them immediately. She’d memorized the café photo, studied it more times than she’d admit. Jon was standing beside a low sofa, one hand in his pocket, the other holding a coffee. Tall, broad, silver-streaked hair catching the light from the windows. Blue shirt, rolled to the elbows, open at the collar. He looked like money. He wasn’t smiling. He was watching the entrance with a quiet stillness that made her skin prickle.
Sara sat on the sofa, legs crossed, a coffee in her hand. Golden blonde hair pulled up in a messy updo. Blue eyes that found Katy the second she walked in. She was wearing a fitted cream dress that buttoned down the front, and her breasts were full and heavy, straining at the third button. She looked like a woman who had been beautiful her whole life and had only gotten better at it.
Katy walked toward them. Her sneakers were silent on the marble. She could feel her heart in her throat. She stopped in front of them, opened her mouth, and said: “Hi. I’m Sara.”
Silence.
Sara raised an eyebrow. Jon’s coffee paused halfway to his mouth.
Katy’s face went red. The kind of red that starts at the chest and climbs. “Oh my god. I’m not Sara. You’re Sara. I’m Katy. I know who I am. I just said the wrong name. I do this all the time ... sometimes. I’m sorry. Oh my god.”
Sara’s face cracked. She started laughing. Not a polite laugh. A real one. The kind where your shoulders shake and you have to put your coffee down. Jon looked at the ceiling, his mouth pressed into a line, but she could see him fighting it.
“I’m such an...,” Katy said, pressing her hands to her hot cheeks. “I practiced this in the car. I had a whole thing. And then I walked in and I saw you and I just forgot my own name.”
“Don’t worry about it, sweetheart,” Jon said. His voice was a low rumble. He was smiling now, just barely. “Happens all the time.”
“Yeah, it happens all the time,” Sara said, still laughing. She stood up and took Katy’s face in both hands, kissing her on the cheek. Her lips lingered a beat too long. She smelled like expensive sunscreen and something floral. “God, you’re even prettier in person.”
Katy was still blushing. “I promise I’m not usually this ditzy.”
“I bet,” Sara said.
Jon set his coffee on the side table and stepped forward. He put his hand on the back of Katy’s neck, warm and heavy, and kissed her other cheek. His thumb brushed the line of her jaw. “Welcome, Katy.”
His hand stayed on her neck for a moment. Katy felt the weight of it all the way down to her toes.
“I almost didn’t come,” she said.
“But you did,” Jon said.
“I did.”
Sara linked her arm through Katy’s. Her breast pressed against Katy’s upper arm. “Good. Because we have plans. Big ones.”
Katy smiled. She was still blushing. She felt small next to them, young in a way she couldn’t shake. Thirty-five years between them. It should have felt wrong. It felt like electricity.
She shifted her weight and her elbow caught the edge of the side table. Jon’s coffee cup wobbled. She grabbed for it, missed, and the cup tipped. Coffee spilled across the marble floor in a dark streak. A few drops splashed onto her white sneakers.
“Oh no. Oh no no no.” She crouched down, looking at the dark spots spreading on the white canvas. “My sneakers. I just bought these.”
Jon looked down at her. Then at Sara. Then back at Katy, crouched on the marble floor in her stained sneakers, her ponytail falling over one shoulder.
“Don’t worry about it, honey,” he said. “We’ll get you new ones.”
Katy looked up at him. Her face was pink again. “Now you think I’m a child.”
Sara laughed. “You don’t look like one.” She paused, looking Katy up and down. “But you are kinda funny.”
Katy stood up. She looked at the coffee on the floor, then at the sneakers, then at Jon. “I’m sorry about the coffee.”
“I’m not drinking it anyway,” Jon said. He put his hand on the back of her neck again. “Come on. Let’s go.”
The shopping was at one place. A single, discreet jewelry boutique on a quiet street that Katy had only ever seen on Instagram.
Jon drove. Sara sat in the back with Katy, their thighs touching on the leather seat. Sara’s hand rested on Katy’s knee, her thumb tracing small circles through the denim.
“You look good in jeans,” Sara said, her eyes moving down Katy’s legs.
“Thank you, Mommy.”
Sara’s thumb pressed harder. “You’re going to be dangerous with that word.”
Jon’s eyes found them in the rearview mirror. He didn’t say anything. He just watched for a moment, then pulled into a parking spot.
The boutique was small and bright, with glass cases lining the walls and a single attendant who greeted Jon by name. Katy wandered the cases, her eyes wide, while Sara stood behind her, close enough that her chest brushed Katy’s shoulder when she leaned in.
“Cartier first,” Jon said. It wasn’t a suggestion.
He watched Katy try on three different models, her wrist turning in the light. He didn’t offer opinions. He just watched. When she slid on the gold Tank and her face changed, he nodded once.
“That one,” he said.
“How do you know?”
“Because you stopped breathing when you put it on.”
She looked down at the watch. The gold was warm against her skin. The diamonds threw tiny sparks across the glass counter.
“It’s perfect,” she whispered.
Sara moved to the next case. “Come here, baby.”
Katy stepped beside her. Sara pointed to a white gold belly-button stud, a tennis bracelet, a pair of earrings. Then she found the anklet. A thin white gold chain with a tiny charm.
“This one,” Sara said. “Sit.”
Katy sat on the small velvet bench. Sara knelt in front of her, her knees apart, her cream dress pulling tight across her thighs. She took Katy’s ankle in her hand and lifted her foot onto her knee.
“You have beautiful ankles,” Sara murmured, her thumb running along the bone.
Katy’s breath caught. Sara’s face was level with her knee. She could smell her perfume, feel the heat of her skin through the denim.
Sara fastened the anklet, her fingers lingering. Then she looked up. Blue eyes meeting green. Something passed between them.
“There,” Sara said. “Now you’re starting to look like ours.”
