The Lubyanka building swallowed the morning light. Its hallways were narrow, painted a shade of green that reminded Natasha of hospital corridors. She walked them alone, her heels clicking a rhythm she had memorized years ago.

The door to Colonel Markov’s office was closed. She knocked twice.

A grunt from inside signaled permission. Markov sat behind his desk, a mountain of flesh in a chair that creaked under his weight. The man in the brown coat stood near the window, his hands clasped behind his back. His sharp cheekbones caught the gray light, his eyes cold and calculating.

“Report,” Markov said.

Natasha stood at attention. “James Blackwood is not a spy. He is exactly what his file says he is. Retired accountant. Widowed. Tourist.”

The man in the brown coat nodded. “I followed him for four days. He contacted no one. He made no unusual calls. He visited standard tourist locations. He ate alone. He spoke only to vendors and waitstaff.”

Markov’s fingers drummed on the desk. The sound was dull, patient.

“He displayed no tradecraft,” the man in the brown coat continued. “No countersurveillance. No dead drops. No signals. He walked through Moscow like a man who had never been trained to look over his shoulder.”

Natasha kept her face neutral. She had watched James walk through Red Square like a man seeing it for the first time. She had watched him touch the headstone of a stranger at Novodevichy and wipe his eyes. She had watched him order borscht and struggle with the menu.

The man in the brown coat pulled a leather notebook from his pocket. He read from it, his voice flat. “Day one: Arbat Street. Purchased a nesting doll. Ate at Café Pushkin. Sat alone for forty-three minutes. Read a guidebook. Day two: Novodevichy Convent. Visited the cemetery. Stopped at the grave of Raisa Gorbacheva. Day three: Rode the metro for three hours. Transferred at five stations. Did not exit. Day four: Museum of Cosmonautics. Lunch at a Georgian restaurant. Walked through a park.” He closed the notebook. “He did nothing.”

Markov leaned back. His chair screamed in protest. His eyes moved from Natasha to the man in the brown coat and back. “Nothing,” he repeated.

“Nothing,” the man confirmed.

Markov stared at them for a long moment. The silence stretched. Natasha could hear the tick of a clock somewhere down the hall. Then Markov shrugged. A heavy, indifferent motion of his broad shoulders. “Then the case is closed. Blackwood goes home. We move on.”

Natasha’s chest tightened. She had known this was coming. She had prepared for it. But hearing the words, the finality in them, felt like a door slamming shut.

“He flies today,” she said. “Sheremetyevo. Eleven hundred hours.”

Markov waved a dismissive hand. “Then you are done with him. Write your final report. File it. Take a new assignment.”

“Yes, Comrade Colonel.” She turned to leave. The man in the brown coat remained by the window, his eyes still on her.

“Natasha.”

She stopped. She didn’t turn around.

“You did good work,” Markov said. “Thorough. Professional.”
