Chapter 7

Romance Sex Story: Chapter 7 - At 54, Emily buys a century home in small-town Ontario to start over. She hires Cole, the skilled 25-year-old contractor who sees the house—and her—clearly. As walls come down, so does her careful restraint. Heat builds through long days of dust and honest work. An age-gap romance of renovation, restraint, and the quiet courage to want more.

The studio rooms came together in a week of quieter work. Once the kitchen wall was closed and the main-floor dust had settled enough to think, Cole shifted to the three east rooms Emily had claimed for herself. New plaster where the old had failed. Sanded floors. The pinboard wall she had described on the first measuring day. Worktables under the windows so the morning light would hit fabric and stone the way she wanted.

By Thursday afternoon the last of the trim was up. Emily stood in the middle room with a roll of linen in her hands and felt, for the first time since the closing, that the house had a centre that belonged to her. Not a project. A place she could work.

Cole came in from the kitchen with two beers and a paper bag from the place on Main that did decent Thai.

“Floor picnic,” he said. “The table isn’t in yet.”

They sat on a drop cloth with cartons between them. Spring rolls, noodles, the green curry she had asked for without expecting him to remember. Outside, the late light moved across the maple. Inside, the new rooms smelled of paint and wood and the food.

Talk started on the work, as it always did. The inspector had signed off on the kitchen framing. Tile was coming Tuesday. The estate-sale pendants would hang in the meeting room once the electrician finished the box.

Then it drifted.

Emily told him, without much decoration, about the marriage. She had been twenty-two. They had fifteen years. Sophia was born the second year. The split, when it came, had not been a spectacle. Two people who had been better at building careers than at living in the same house. Sophia had been fourteen. Afterward Emily had worked and raised her daughter and discovered she liked her own company more than she had been willing to admit. There had been men since. None of them had lasted. She had stopped being surprised by that.

Cole listened the way he listened to a house, without rushing to fix the story.

He told her about leaving. Twenty, a framing crew in Hamilton. The money had been good. That was never the problem. He had always felt like he didn’t belong there. Too loud. Too rushed. Days that ended without ever feeling finished. He had come home because the work here was real and because he had never stopped knowing these roads. Four years on his own name. Enough jobs now that he could choose.
