By Thursday the upstairs plumbing was off and the kitchen was a shell. The only working shower was the old one on the main floor, a tight fibreglass stall the previous owners had jammed into what used to be a pantry. Emily had learned to live with it. Hot water, a lock that almost caught, a towel on the hook outside the door.
Cole and the crew left at four-thirty. He said he was heading to the supplier before they closed. Emily waited until the truck was gone, then locked the front door, stripped in the hall, and stepped under the water. Dust from the day’s work ran off her in grey ribbons. She washed her hair, soaped her shoulders, let the heat work on the ache in her lower back. She was thinking about grout colours and nothing else when she heard the front door open.
“Em? It’s me. Forgot the reciprocating blade.”
His voice, closer than she wanted it.
“I’m in the shower,” she called. “Two minutes.”
“I’ll grab it and go.”
The bathroom door was not fully latched. She had pushed it to and the old strike plate had not held. Steam drifted into the hall. She shut the water off, pulled the thin towel around herself, and opened the stall.
He was in the doorway.
He had already seen her. She knew it from the way he was standing, one hand on the jamb, the look on his face stripped of the usual care. Wet hair stuck to her neck. The towel covered her breasts and the tops of her thighs and not much else. Water ran down the line of her spine and disappeared under the terry cloth. For a second neither of them moved.
Then he looked away, too late to pretend he hadn’t looked at all.
“Shit. Sorry. Door was open.”
“I know.” Her voice came out steadier than she felt. “The latch doesn’t catch.”
He stepped back into the hall. She heard him take the blade from the kitchen, the toolbox close, his boots on the pine.
“I’m going,” he said, still not looking toward the bathroom. “See you in the morning.”
The front door shut. The truck started. Emily stood dripping on the old linoleum with the towel clenched in one fist and her pulse high in her throat.
She was more flustered than angry. That was the problem. He had seen the shape of her, the age of her, the wet skin and the small, ordinary facts of a fifty-four-year-old body stepping out of a cheap shower, and the look on his face had not been pity or surprise. It had been hunger he had not quite got behind his teeth in time.
