Chapter 17

Romance Sex Story: Chapter 17 - At 54, Emily buys a century home in small-town Ontario to start over. She hires Cole, the skilled 25-year-old contractor who sees the house—and her—clearly. As walls come down, so does her careful restraint. Heat builds through long days of dust and honest work. An age-gap romance of renovation, restraint, and the quiet courage to want more.

Cole woke first.

Grey light, her hair on his pillow, the dress from last night over the chair. Emily slept on her side with one hand under her cheek, mouth soft, the line between her brows gone. He lay still and watched her breathe. The feeling in his chest was already past wanting her in bed. He knew that. He also knew she was not ready to give the years between them any less power than she already had. He could wait. He would rather wait than push and lose the thing that had started in her kitchen over a rotten plate and a tape measure.

He got up quietly, dressed in yesterday’s slacks, and went down to the kitchen.

When she came in she was in the summery dress again, barefoot, purse in one hand. She set it on the chair, found her hairbrush, and stood at the counter pulling it through her hair while he put plates down. Eggs, toast, fruit, coffee. Nothing showy. Enough.

“You’re going to make it very easy to get used to this,” she said. “You cooking for me.”

He only smiled and poured her coffee.

They ate. Talk stayed light. The inspection list. The porch on the frame house coming off before the real work started. She did not mention last night and she did not take it back either. When she stood to find her sandals he handed her the purse.

“I’ll walk you as far as Main. You walked here last night.”

“I can walk myself.”

“I know. I’ll still walk you partway.”

She let him as far as the corner, then sent him back. On Church Street she went upstairs, changed into tan trousers and a white blouse, enough buttons left undone to keep his interest and not enough to give downtown anything to use, and worked in the studio until noon.

He pulled in on time. They walked the two blocks to the hardware store. She held the switch plates up to the light. He turned them over, checked the threads, told her which ones would sit flush on old plaster. A man Cole knew from a roofing job said hello and looked from Cole to Emily and back again. Cole answered the hello and went on talking about screws. Emily felt her face heat and kept the plates in her hand.

They walked Main with a paper bag and a sample board she had brought from the studio. Someone nodded from the diner window. Someone else, a woman Emily had met once at the bakery, smiled a little too knowingly. Cole did not change pace.
