The ticket had been booked since spring. Emily flew to Vancouver every year for Lily’s birthday and she was not going to stop because her kitchen was unfinished and her contractor had kissed her back in an attic.
Lily was turning six. The party was Saturday in Sophia and Jim’s backyard, paper banners, too much cake, a dozen children from school. Emily packed the grey suit she did not need and the wrapped studio set she had found for a six-year-old who liked to draw houses. Cole drove her to the small regional airport on Thursday morning because her car was blocked by a drywall delivery.
“Text if the inspector gives you trouble,” she said at the curb.
“I will. Have a good birthday.”
He did not linger. She almost wished he had.
The house in Vancouver was the one Sophia and Jim had bought after Lily was born, a narrow place with a view of other people’s roofs and a kitchen that always smelled like coffee. Sophia hugged her at the door the way she always did, hard and brief. Jim took the suitcase. Lily came down the hall at a run and slammed into Emily’s legs.
“Grandma Em.”
“That’s me. Let me look at you. Six tomorrow. Unacceptable.”
Lily grinned and dragged her to see the birthday banner already taped above the fireplace.
The house on Church Street went quiet without her. Cole sent a photo of the kitchen tile going down, then another of the upstairs bath framed. Emily sent back a picture of the harbour from Sophia’s deck and asked whether the grout colour still looked right in the afternoon light. She knew it did. She asked anyway.
Friday night, after Lily was in bed, Sophia opened a bottle and they sat in the kitchen with the window cracked onto the mild west-coast air.
“You look good,” Sophia said. “Rested. Or something close to it.”
“The house is a mess. I’m sleeping on an air mattress. Don’t romanticize it.”
Sophia smiled into her glass. “All right. Not rested. Occupied. That’s new for you.”
Emily almost let it pass. The wine and the distance from Church Street made the other thing easier to say.
“There’s a contractor. Cole. He’s doing my place and he’ll do the next one if I buy it. He’s twenty-five. It’s complicated.”
