The morning light came through the curtains in golden bars, striping the white sheets.
Joe lay still for a moment, letting the awareness seep in. Last night of the trip. The thought sat in his chest like a stone in a shoe, present, uncomfortable, unavoidable.
He swung his legs over the edge of the bed and stood. The routine had become automatic by now. Shower. Dress. Elevator to the ground floor.
The buffet spread with its towers of fruit and baskets of bread. Breakfast was eggs and coffee and a plate of melon slices that tasted like sunshine.
He ate on the terrace, watching the pool below. A woman in a wide hat was doing slow laps. A couple sat at the shallow end, their legs dangling in the water. It was quieter today. Fewer voices. Fewer towels draped across loungers.
Joe found his usual spot, the lounger near the shallow end, the one with the clear view of the bar. He settled in with his paperback, the one he’d barely touched all week. The pages were still crisp, the spine unbroken. He read the same paragraph three times and gave up. His mind kept drifting. To Laura. The way she’d grabbed him at the bar, her hand sliding into his shorts like she owned him. The hunger in her mouth when they’d kissed. The sounds she made, low and rough, her accent curling around words he half-understood.
He shifted on the lounger, adjusting himself. And then to what Sareena had said. Rib eye steak. The image made him snort. He imagined himself walking into Hypnotica with a sign around his neck: Prime Cut. Tender. Generous. Inquire Within.
The pool area was emptying out. A family with two kids gathered their towels and flip-flops, heading toward the lobby. An older couple followed, the man carrying a stack of magazines. Within twenty minutes, the pool was nearly deserted.
The bartender was a local guy with tattooed forearms and a gold chain around his neck. He was wiping down the counter when Joe approached. “Slow today,” Joe said, settling onto a stool.
The bartender set a napkin in front of him. “Check-out day. They leave in the morning, new ones come in the afternoon. Dead zone in between.” He tilted his head. “What’re you drinking?”
“Something cold. Surprise me.”
The drink came in a tall glass, clear with a wedge of lime floating on top. Joe sipped it. Something with coconut. Sweet but not too sweet. The ice clinked against his teeth.
“So,” the bartender said, leaning on the counter, “how’s the trip been?”
Joe turned the glass in his hands. “Good. Really good. Needed this.”
“Wife enjoying herself too?”
Joe paused. Shook his head. “No wife. I’m here alone.”
The bartender’s eyebrows lifted. A smile spread across his face, slow and knowing. “Ah.” He nodded, let the word hang. “So. Which bar have you visited?”
Joe laughed. “What do you mean?”
The bartender laughed too, easy and warm. “Come on, man. Single guy on this island, staying at a resort with a beach and a pool? You’ve visited one of the brothels. I’ve worked here long enough to know the look.”
Joe held up his hands. “Caught me.” He took another sip. “Hypnotica. A couple of times.”
The bartender’s grin widened. He reached under the counter and pulled out another bottle, refilling Joe’s glass without being asked. “Good choice. The girls there” He whistled low. “You had fun?”
“Yeah. I did.”
They talked for a while longer. About the island, about the bartender’s family in Dominica, about the best places to eat off the resort. Joe found himself relaxing into the conversation, the easy rhythm of two men sharing drinks and stories. Finally, Joe slid off the stool. “I should get ready for dinner.”
“Same time tomorrow?”
Joe shook his head. “Flying out in the morning.”
The bartender extended his hand. “Safe travels, brother.”
Joe shook it. “Thanks for the drinks.”
He turned to go, then paused. Looked back over his shoulder. “I’m having the rib eye tonight. At the steakhouse.”
The bartender tilted his head, confused. Joe just smiled. “Inside joke.”
