The next two days passed in a haze of sun and salt and rum. Joe claimed the same lounger each morning, the one near the shallow end with a clear view of the pool.

He read a paperback he’d grabbed from the gift shop, a thriller he barely registered, and let the pages grow damp in his hands.

He swam when the heat became too much. He ate when hunger prodded him. He drank when the bartender raised an eyebrow and pointed at his empty glass.

On the third morning, he woke with a different energy. The ceiling fan spun above him, cutting the humidity into manageable slices. He lay there a moment, letting the awareness settle.

Tonight. He’d go back tonight.

The day stretched long, but Joe didn’t mind. He took a walk along the beach, let the waves wash over his ankles, watched a pair of pelicans dive for breakfast.

He ate grilled fish at a shack near the pier, the chef a woman with a laugh that carried across the sand. He napped in the shade of a palm tree. By the time the sun began its descent, he was ready.

He showered slowly, let the hot water work the last knots from his shoulders. Dressed in shorts and a clean T-shirt, nothing fancy, nothing that said he was trying too hard.

The cab ride to Hypnotica felt shorter this time. Familiar. The door swung open. The amber light hit him first, then the bass, then the smell of perfume and sweat and something floral.

The crowd was thicker tonight, the lounge fuller. A group of men in polo shirts clustered near the DJ booth, laughing too loud. A girl in red sat on a couch, her leg crossed, her heel dangling from her toes. And there, near the far wall, Joe saw her.

Laura was talking to a guy in a white linen suit. Her hair fell in a dark curtain down her back. She was leaning in, her hand resting on his arm, her lips moving in words Joe couldn’t hear.

The guy was nodding, smiling too wide. Something flickered in Joe’s chest. Not jealousy. Something else. A thread of disappointment, thin but present.

He turned toward the bar. The bartender with the braids and gold hoop recognized him.

She pulled a bottle from the cooler without being asked, set it on the napkin, and tilted her head. “You look like you’re waiting.”

Joe took a long swallow. “Something like that.”

The beer was cold, bitter, grounding. He leaned against the bar and watched the room without watching it.

A girl in blue walked past, caught his eye, smiled. He smiled back, noncommittal. She moved on. He was halfway through the bottle when he felt it. A hand. Sliding across his lower back. Fingers curling around his hip. Then Laura’s body pressed against his side, her warmth seeping through the thin cotton of his shirt. Her breath found his ear, and her voice came low, rough, the accent curling around every syllable. “Where have you been?”

Before he could answer, her hand moved. Down. Past his waistband. Into his shorts. Her fingers found their target and closed around him, her palm warm and confident. A slow stroke, deliberate, the pressure just enough to make his breath catch.

Joe’s hand jerked. His bottle clinked against the bar. His entire body locked for a half-second before the sensation flooded through him.

He looked around. The bartender was wiping a glass, her eyes averted. A man two stools down was scrolling through his phone, oblivious. The room hummed with its usual noise, its usual movement. And Laura had her hand down his pants, stroking him like it was the most natural thing in the world.

He felt the purr of her voice before the words registered. A low sound, almost feline, vibrating through the curve of her mouth against his ear. “I missed you.”

His throat worked. Found no words. Her thumb traced a slow circle. Her fingers tightened, then relaxed, a rhythm that spoke of patience and possession. She pressed her body closer, her breasts flattening against his arm, her hip against his thigh. Joe’s fingers found the edge of the bar. Gripped it. “You didn’t come back,” she said, her voice still that low, vibrating hum. “Three days. I thought maybe you didn’t like me.”

“I liked you.” The words came out rough, scraped from somewhere raw.

Her lips brushed the shell of his ear. “Bueno.” She stroked him once more, slow, savoring, and then withdrew her hand. The absence of her touch felt like a cold wind.

She stepped back, and when he turned, she was looking at him with that slow, knowing smile. “Finish your drink,” she said.

Joe drained the bottle in three long swallows. He set it down, the glass clinking against the wood.

She took his hand and led him through the crowd. The hallway was the same. The blue doors. The muffled sounds. The third door on the left. The key turning. The lock clicking. The door closed behind them. And then there was nothing gentle about it.

Laura’s mouth found his before the lock finished engaging. Her hands fisted in his shirt, pulling him forward, her body colliding with his. The kiss was hard, hungry, her tongue sliding against his with an urgency that bordered on desperation. She bit his lower lip, tugged, released, and dove back in.

Joe’s hands found her waist, her hips, the curve of her ass. She was wearing a dress again, black this time, stretchy, thin. He could feel every line of her body through the fabric.

She walked him backward until his knees hit the bed. He fell. She followed.

Laura landed on top of him, her thighs straddling his hips, her mouth never leaving his. She kissed him like she was trying to devour him, her hands roaming his chest, his stomach, the waistband of his shorts. Her fingernails scraped across his skin, leaving trails of heat.

Joe’s hands found the hem of her dress. He pushed it up, over her thighs, over her hips.
