The weight of another twelve-hour day pressed into Joe’s shoulders as he finally collapsed onto his worn leather couch. He loosened his tie with a grunt, tossing it onto the armrest like a snake he’d finally wrestled free.
The apartment was quiet, save for the hum of the refrigerator and the low buzz of his own exhaustion. A year and a half. Eighteen months of back-to-back deadlines, impossible targets, the kind of stress that seeped into your bones and made a home there.
Work had been a goddamn beast, relentless and hungry, and Joe was feeling every single day of it. He rubbed his eyes, feeling the burn. Something had to give. He needed a break, a real one. A vacation.
His laptop was still warm from the day’s work, but he pulled it onto his lap anyway, clicking onto a travel website out of pure instinct. He didn’t even know what he was looking for, just that he needed to get away.
His fingers scrolled through beach resort deals, tropical escapes, anything that didn’t involve an Excel spreadsheet. Then he saw it. St. Maarten. Leaves in two days. One week all-inclusive at the Sonesta Maho.
His heart skipped. The memories came flooding back, the warm salt air, the lazy afternoons by the pool, the music spilling out of Carolina’s into the balmy night. And there, in the back of his mind, the soft curves and knowing smiles of Adrianna and Maria, their laughter still echoing in his dreams. It was perfect. Exactly what he needed. Joe didn’t hesitate. He booked it immediately, the confirmation email pinging into his inbox like a promise.
Two days later, he was boarding the plane for St. Maarten, the weight of the past year already starting to lift with every step down the jet bridge. The engine hummed beneath him as he settled into his seat, and for the first time in months, Joe let himself smile.
The door opened. That smell hit him first. Salt. Jet fuel. Sun-baked concrete and something floral, sweet, drifting from the gardens beyond the terminal. His lungs filled with it and his shoulders dropped an inch he hadn’t realized they’d been carrying.
Customs took twelve minutes. A bored stamp, a nod, and he was through. The shuttle to Sonesta Maho groaned under the weight of luggage and tourists, but Joe kept the window cracked, letting the warm air wash over his face.
The beach slid into view, white sand, turquoise water so bright it hurt to look at directly. A catamaran drifted on the horizon, its sails slack.
The resort’s lobby opened like a cathedral of cool marble and rattan. A ceiling fan stirred the air above the check-in desk. The girl behind the counter had dark skin and a smile that seemed to cost her nothing.
“Welcome to Sonesta Maho.” Her fingers danced across the keyboard. “Name?”
“Joe.”
She tapped. Paused. Her eyes flicked to his. “I see you’ve stayed with us before. Welcome back, Mr. Joe.”
Something warm unfurled in his ribs. “Thanks. It’s good to be back.”
“Your room is ready. Ocean view, fourth floor. If you need anything”
“I know where to find you.”
Her smile widened a fraction. Joe took the key card and followed the bellman to the elevator.
