The light came through the curtains, softer this time. Pale gold instead of harsh white.

Joe blinked, his eyes adjusting. The ceiling fan spun. The air conditioner hummed. His body felt heavy, but the familiar pressure in his skull had faded to a dull ache.

Last day. The thought landed like a stone in still water. Ripples spread outward, the flight home, the apartment, the project waiting on his desk, the gray rhythm of workday mornings. He let the thought settle, let himself feel the weight of it.

A knock on the door. Jeff’s voice, clearer than it had been in days. “Breakfast, asshole.”

Joe smiled, swung his legs over the side of the bed.

The buffet line seemed less hostile today. The eggs looked edible. The bacon crisped and steaming. Joe loaded a plate, grabbed a glass of orange juice, found a table near the window. Jeff arrived a minute later, his stride easy. His face had color again, not just the sunburn pink of the first few days, but a healthy tan. His eyes were clear.

“You look human,” Joe said.

“Feel human.”

Jeff set down his plate. A full plate; eggs, sausage, toast, a pile of fresh fruit.

“Slept nine hours. Straight through.”

He sat, unfolded his napkin. “It’s a miracle.”

Joe picked up his fork. “The power of sleep.”

“And hydration. Not a single drop of alcohol last night. Seven glasses of water before bed.” Jeff stabbed a piece of sausage. “I woke up feeling like a new man.”

They ate in comfortable silence. The clatter of plates, the distant splash of the pool, the murmur of conversation around them. The sun climbed higher, painting the room in warm light. Jeff finished his eggs, pushed his plate aside.

“So. Your last night at Carolinas.”

Joe chewed, swallowed. “Yeah.”

“What happened? After I went to bed.”

The question hung between them, casual but weighted. Joe wiped his mouth with a napkin, bought himself a moment.

“I went back,” he said. “Adrianna and Maria were there.”

Jeff’s eyebrows lifted. “Both of them. Again?”

“No. Separate.” Joe picked up his coffee, let the warmth seep through the cup. “I paid for each of them. One at a time.”

“Separate how?”

Joe shrugged. “I had Adrianna first. Then Maria. Each got their own session.”

Jeff leaned back, his chair creaking. “Damn.”

A long pause.

“Was it worth it?”

The question surprised Joe. He thought about it, really thought about it.

Adrianna’s red sheets. Maria’s whispered secret. The way their hands had moved, practiced and patient. “Yeah,” he said. “It was.”

Jeff shook his head slowly, a grin spreading across his face. “I’m almost jealous.”

“Almost?”

“I’m married, man. Happily married.” Jeff’s voice was matter-of-fact. “I got a daughter. A life back home I’m not willing to lose.” He paused, his fingers tracing the rim of his coffee cup. “But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t wonder what it’d be like. Just once.”

Joe watched him. “You could have come.”

“I know.” Jeff’s smile turned rueful. “But I’d rather live through you than explain to my wife why I disappeared for two hours on vacation.” He laughed, short and honest. “That’s a conversation I don’t want to have.”

Joe laughed too. “Probably smart.”

“Probably.” Jeff picked up his coffee, raised it in a mock toast. “To you. Getting some for both of us.”

Joe clinked his cup against Jeff’s. “To the last day.”

The day dissolved like sugar in warm water. They claimed loungers by the pool, side by side. The sun blazed overhead. Joe closed his eyes, felt the heat sink into his skin, felt the tension of the past week slowly soften. His limbs melted into the chair.

Jeff ordered a single beer around noon. Joe got a Coke.

They sipped in silence, watching families splash in the shallow end, watching a group of teenagers try to impress each other off the diving board.

“I could get used to this,” Jeff said.

“You and me both.”

“Think we’ll actually do this next year?”

Joe turned his head, squinted at Jeff through the glare. “You want to?”

“Maybe.” Jeff’s voice was thoughtful. “If things work out. If I find a new job. If things settle down.” He paused. “It’d be something to look forward to.”

Joe nodded. “Something to look forward to.”

The afternoon stretched. They swam. They dozed. Jeff ordered a second beer around four, nursing it slowly. Joe stuck to water, savoring the clarity.

Dinner came at seven, burgers from the poolside grill, eaten on the loungers as the sun bled orange into purple. The air cooled. The reggae music from the pool speakers softened to something slower, more melancholy.

“This is nice,” Jeff said, his mouth half-full.

Joe nodded. “It is.”
