The taxi smelled like coconut air freshener and old leather.

Joe settled into the back seat, gave the driver the address, and watched the casino lights shrink in the side mirror. The streets got narrower. Brighter. The neon glow of Philipsburg’s nightlife bled through the palms.

They passed the Chinese restaurant first, its red sign flickering, the takeout counter still lit. And there, beside it, the entrance.

Carolinas.

He paid the driver, stepped out into the humid dark. The door was propped open, letting out a slice of yellow light and the thrum of a reggaeton beat.

Joe walked in, the bar was half-full, men clustered near the stools, a few women in barely-there dresses moving between them.

Their eyes slid over him, appraising, dismissive when they didn’t recognize him. But Joe barely saw any of it. His bladder was screaming. All those beers at the casino, the rum punches from dinner, the accumulated weight of hours of drinking pressed against his gut like a fist. He needed the bathroom. Now.

He moved fast, weaving between tables without making eye contact. Past the bar. Through the narrow hallway at the back. The beaded curtain hung at the end, clacking as he shoved through it. The bathroom was small. Single urinal, a sink with a cracked mirror, the air thick with bleach and something floral trying to cover it.

Joe unzipped, exhaled long and low as the pressure released.

God. The sound of it hitting the porcelain was loud in the quiet space. He closed his eyes, let his shoulders drop. The relief was almost euphoric, a full-body unclenching he didn’t realize he’d been holding onto. He stood there, breathing, listening to the steady stream, not thinking about anything.

The beads clicked behind him. Softly at first. A single strand shifting. Then more.

Joe’s stream faltered. He glanced sideways, couldn’t see past the edge of the stall divider.

The clicking continued, someone moving through the curtain. Someone else coming in to use the bathroom. He finished, shook off, zipped up. Turned around.

Adrianna stood just inside the doorway, one hand still holding a strand of beads. Beside her, a shorter woman with dark hair and a knowing smile. Both of them looking at him. Both of them watching.

“Oh,” Joe said. Not his most articulate.

Adrianna’s face broke into recognition. Her lips parted, then curled into that easy grin he remembered. “I thought you go home.” Her accent softened the words, blurred the edges. “Mister Joe. You come back?”

“I did go home.” He heard how stupid it sounded. “I mean, I went home. And then I came back. Here. To St Maarten.”

Adrianna laughed, a low throaty sound. She said something to the other woman in rapid Spanish. The woman, her eyes dark, assessing, let her gaze travel down Joe’s body and back up.

“This is Maria,” Adrianna said, gesturing. “My friend. She work here too. New.”

“New,” Maria repeated. Her voice was softer than Adrianna’s, almost shy, but her eyes weren’t shy at all.

Joe wiped his hands on his pants. Realized he hadn’t washed them yet. Turned to the sink, ran the water, pumped soap into his palm.

The two girls watched him in the mirror. Their reflections held his gaze.

This isn’t weird, he told himself. This is perfectly normal. He dried his hands on a paper towel, crumpled it, tossed it in the bin.

“You girls want a drink? I was just gonna grab a seat at the bar.”

Adrianna’s smile widened. She linked her arm through Maria’s, pulled her forward through the beaded curtain. “Drink. Yes. We drink.”

The bar was busier now. A group of German tourists had claimed the corner, loud and laughing, their beers sweating rings onto the wood. Joe found three stools together near the far end, gestured for the bartender. “Three beers. Whatever’s cold.”
