The text came through while Joe was still unpacking.

He’d been home exactly six days. The suitcase lay open on the bed, a chaos of wrinkled shirts and sand still clinging to the creases of his shorts. His skin held the last traces of a Caribbean tan, fading now, but stubborn.

You busy next month?

Jeff’s name on the screen.

Joe smiled, thumbed the phone unlocked.

Just got back from St Maarten. What’s up?

The reply took three minutes. Joe watched the dots appear and vanish, appear again.

Company folded. I’m out. Wife says I need a trip. You in?

He read it twice. The laugh that escaped him was half surprise, half something softer.

Jeff never asked for help. Jeff was the guy who changed your tire before you knew it was flat, who remembered your wife’s birthday when you forgot, who showed up with beer and said nothing when you needed silence.

Joe typed: June 6th. Sonesta Maho. I know the place.

He didn’t tell Jeff about the other side of the island. Didn’t mention the narrow street behind the Chinese restaurant in Philipsburg, or the bar with the pink neon sign that buzzed faintly in the humidity. Some things you keep until the moment demands them.

The flight landed at 2:47 PM.

Stepping off the plane was like walking into a wet blanket. Heat wrapped around Joe’s lungs, thick and sweet with jet fuel and salt. Beside him, Jeff squinted into the sun, his shoulders still carrying the tension of two months of severance paperwork and sleepless nights.

“Christ,” Jeff muttered. “It’s like the air is trying to marry you.”

Joe clapped his shoulder. “You get used to it.”

They cleared customs in twenty minutes. The taxi driver, a man named Renaldo who remembered Joe from the last trip, talked the whole way about cruise ship crowds and the new casino, his accent rolling the English into something musical.

Jeff stared out the window at the hills of scrub brush and pastel buildings, the sudden flash of turquoise water between gaps in the trees. The Sonesta rose up at the end of the beach road, all glass and white concrete.

Lobby was cool, marble floors slick underfoot, and the woman at the front desk smiled with her whole face when Joe gave her his name.

“Welcome back, Mr. Callahan. We have you in the ocean-view suite, same as before.”

Jeff glanced at him. “Same as before?”

“I travel for work a lot,” Joe said, which wasn’t a lie exactly. Just not the whole truth.

First night was low-key. They ate at the resort restaurant, ribeyes and red wine, watched a cargo ship crawl across the dark horizon. Jeff talked about his kid, his wife, the garage he was thinking of building.

Joe listened, refilled his glass, said the right things.

By midnight Jeff was asleep, snoring lightly through the wall that separated their bedrooms.
