We had crashed out hard after we had sex the night before. I barely had the energy to haul my ass to the bathroom to pee and clean up. If Ky hadn’t encouraged me I might have just fallen asleep and dealt with the consequences in the morning.

I was glad for his insistence when I woke up. I didn’t feel sticky or gross between my legs, but my head was definitely foggy after Tuesday’s indulgences. I had fallen asleep with Ky in our standard formation, with me as little spoon, so when I rolled over I expected to find Ky, but the bed was empty. I dragged myself to the edge of the bed and took a big swig of water then looked at my phone. It wasn’t even 7 AM Pacific time. I was still a couple time zones ahead. There was a text from Ky explaining he’d gone to find some breakfast and would be back soon. I gratefully pulled the covers around my nude form, deeply appreciative to have such a caring partner.

I woke up for the second time about a half hour later according to the time on my phone. I could smell food and realized Ky must have come back with sustenance. Noticing I was awake, he walked over with a tray he had presumably stolen from the breakfast area downstairs.

“Care for breakfast in bed?” he asked. I nodded and rolled over on my back and scooched up so I could sit up against the headboard. Ky placed the tray on my lap and kissed my temple. I dug into the water, juice, yogurt and waffles.

“I didn’t want to go too heavy because there’s a sick sushi spot I’d like to take you for lunch by campus, hope that’s ok,” Ky said.

“Dude, it’s more than ok, you’re the fucking best. The last time someone brought me breakfast in bed was, uh, never,” I said.

“Well fuck me, that’s some bullshit, I’m sorry I haven’t for you before,” Ky said.

“I mean when would you have?” I pointed out. Ky cocked his head to the side and realized I was right. The odd boundaries of our quasi-relationship meant we hadn’t really celebrated milestones like anniversaries or birthdays the way a traditional couple might.

“Fair point, I suppose. We’ll have to see if we can find some more opportunities in the future to treat you right,” Ky said with a warm smile.

“I wouldn’t mind that,” I admitted. A desire to be pampered didn’t come naturally to me, but when it was Ky taking care of me I seemed to have a weakness for it. Not for the first time I mentally kicked myself for not jumping at the chance to deepen our relationship sooner.

I felt a little better physically after eating breakfast and dragged Ky to the shower with me. He started washing himself, as was our typical routine before he washed me. I stopped him, wanting to take over those duties. I actually felt a little ashamed of how many times I had let him lovingly wash me without reciprocation. No more, I vowed.

Ky was a little surprised but certainly had no complaints about having my hands all over his body. He was as generous and gentle as ever when he returned the favor and washed me.

I wasn’t 100% after breakfast and a shower, but my hangover was definitely minimized. We got dressed and checked out of the hotel, then took the hotel shuttle back to the airport to pick up our rental car.

In keeping with our MO for this trip we had paid the extra fee to rent a sports car. Ky grinned when he spotted a nearly new Corvette in the lineup of available cars and we claimed it. Reed got a picture and a Venmo request.

Ky took me on a sort of nickel tour of San Francisco by car, driving through Haight-Ashbury, by the painted ladies and stopping for a brief stroll down Fisherman’s Wharf. We crossed back and forth over the Golden Gate Bridge although it was too socked in by fog to get the full effect.

It was cool to see a city I had never been to, but even better was seeing Ky confident and happy, showing me a town he clearly knew well.

We crossed the Bay Bridge over to Oakland late in the morning and Ky navigated us to the University of California campus in Berkeley, where he had gone to college. We parked a block away from one of the main entrances and picked up lunch from the sushi joint Ky had been insistent we try. One bite of the sushi burrito and I understood his insistence - it was delicious, some of the best sushi I’d ever had.

We walked around the largely deserted campus after we ate, with Ky pointing out where he’d lived when he was in the dorms and various important buildings. It was fun insight into his life before I knew him. I loved some of his funny stories about parties, sprinting to exams and late night cramming sessions. Seeing the physical locations that had helped shape who he was today helped me connect with him in a new way I really liked.

Berkeley, California, USA

Once we had seen the sights in Berkeley we got on the road for the drive to Napa, with Ky letting me take a turn behind the wheel of the Corvette. Unfortunately, the day before Thanksgiving traffic meant I-80 was largely clogged and I never really got a chance to stretch the sports car’s legs.

The way Napa itself snuck up on us kind of surprised me. It felt like one minute we were working our way through exurban light industrial and commercial areas, then all of a sudden we were in Napa. I had seen maybe one field of grapevines.

We stopped off briefly at our rental place to check it out and unload our bags. We were suitably impressed. After a quick bathroom break we got back on the road for our first wine tasting appointment. That had been another fun fact I learned - in Napa you don’t just show up and do a wine tasting - you make a reservation.

We drove over a ridge to the west of the town of Napa, and suddenly I got it. Now we were in wine country. There were rolling hills covered with vineyards as far as the eye could see.

Our first tasting was at a place that was objectively nice, but had a very corporate feel to it. The outdoor table we were seated at had a lovely view. I snapped pics with my phone. The wine was decent, even good. The server was polished, but almost robotic, as if he was reading from a script. He probably was. He offered to take our photo ‘for the gram’. We politely declined.

We were still stuffed from our decadent sushi lunch so we passed on getting an app and the wine really wasn’t good enough to warrant ordering a glass. We also had our second reservation to get to.

Ky was driving as we got off the main roads and I directed him to the address for the next winery. It was up a long dirt driveway that was probably a quarter mile long. Our sports car could barely handle the bumpy surface.

“Uh, are you sure this is right?” Ky asked as we pulled into the small ‘parking lot’. It was more of a large turnaround I didn’t think could accommodate more than ten vehicles. To our right was a house that looked like a pretty standard residence. To our left was a traditional-looking barn. We got out warily, unsure if we had accidentally pulled into someone’s home.

I spotted a woman walking towards us and her friendly smile made me hopeful we were in the right place. She had a natural look and confidence that immediately stood out to me. She was taller than me - although basically everyone was. She was dressed stylishly but not expensively in a blue button-down blouse, skinny jeans and sturdy ankle boots. Her skin was tanned, but her coloring was otherwise light - as if she spent a lot of time outdoors rather than having a naturally tanned skin tone. Her eyes were somewhere between blue and hazel and her hair appeared to be naturally blonde. No makeup or jewelry in sight. She had a slender figure and small bust. I was immediately attracted to her.

“Hi, are you Lexi and Ky?” the woman asked.

“Yeah, guess we’re in the right place?” Ky said tentatively.

“Sure are! You guys are my 3 PM, come on up,” the woman said and waved us towards the barn. That surprised me - just the two of us for a tasting seemed inefficient.

We followed the woman as she strode gracefully towards the barn. She had a mane of untamed blonde hair that cascaded down her back nearly to her waist. The way her jeans hugged her ass was also eye-catching.

In the barn she directed us to a small room off to the side, obviously used for tastings. There were half a dozen standing tables, but only one set with wine glasses and a tasting menu.

The woman introduced herself as Cassie and poured our first wine to taste, a Chardonnay. I normally was not a big fan of Chardonnays, but thought this one was delicious. I told Cassie as much and she smiled. She seemed more invested in how much we liked the wine than I expected.

We worked through four additional wines, each of which was impressive. As we sipped Cassie told us the story of the vineyard. The elderly couple who owned it had started out as farmers, selling their grapes to the big industrial wineries. After several decades of success they decided to take up making small amounts of wine on their own and started their own boutique winery. They didn’t have retail distribution - they just sold their wine to local restaurants and those in their wine club. It was almost like a hobby for them. I was impressed, and I could tell Ky was too. He didn’t have to say anything, I could already see the wheels turning in his brain - this would be exactly the sort of business he would like to start with his newfound wealth.

Cassie poured each of us glasses of Red Zinfandel, which Ky and I agreed was our favorite, and she led us on a tour of the wine cellar and vineyard itself. I actually learned a lot about winemaking I didn’t know. Despite modern technology, it sounded like it was still much more of an art than a science. I thought that was really cool - even in the modern age there was a legitimately artisanal aspect to it. Cassie’s knowledge also really showed through - she clearly knew her stuff when it came to winemaking and was passionate about it. After the tour she got our picture with the vines in the background, then we sat around a picnic table with fresh glasses.

“I think I’ll have a glass as well, if you don’t mind,” Cassie said. “You guys are my last tour of the day.”

“Of course we don’t mind, but please don’t feel obligated to babysit us if you have somewhere to get to for tomorrow,” Ky said.

“Oh don’t worry, nothing like a glass of good wine outdoors on a beautiful day to start to unwind,” Cassie said as she poured herself a glass of Chardonnay.

“I’ll drink to that!” I said and took a sip. Cassie raised her own glass and took a sip herself.

“Ok so you guys probably know I have to tell you about our wine club. I’m pitching you a little here, but I promise it’s a solid deal,” Cassie said.
