I’d done the right thing. I knew it in my heart. I just wish it didn’t feel so much like cutting off my left arm.
That’s dramatic, Cassie. You just had a little crush on Ky. At worst it was analogous to cutting off your little finger. You’d do that for a really good friend, right?
I mean probably. The whole thing was stupid anyway. Did I really want to be the sort of person who leveraged a weakness in another couple’s relationship to weasel my way in? Hell no.
Still, as I watched them pull away in their silly sports car, I couldn’t help but feel I’d somehow missed a golden opportunity. Whatever. Who the hell drives sports cars anyway? Totally impractical.
I threw myself into what always comforted me: working outdoors. Focusing on the plants I tended to. As I cared for the vines my disappointment started to diminish. Pride at having helped out my new friends took its place.
I worked until the sun was starting to disappear to the west, or at least it would have been if it wasn’t so overcast, then packed up my tools and stored them away. I enjoyed the customary Friday glass of wine with my coworkers in the tasting area of the barn, then headed home.
Since Ky and Lexi had hosted dinner the night before on Thanksgiving the plan had been that I would host dinner that night. I’d been expecting a cancellation text from them all afternoon. Why would they want to hang out with me after unveiling their true feelings to each other? They were probably engaged in some sort of tantric evening of consummating their love.
A text still hadn’t shown up by the time I got home, so I showered and got dressed for the evening.
In a way, the certainty was nice. After I practically threw myself at them the night before, it was clear they weren’t interested in me in that way. Any fantasies I might have had about Ky were long gone after he got his girl that afternoon. We were just friends. The kind of friends who wouldn’t judge me if I wore a flannel shirt and leggings for dinner. So that’s what I did.
I put on some nice classic rock at a low volume and began to get started on dinner. I eyed the second package of chicken thighs I’d purchased that morning, since I was now planning to cook for three instead of one. Maybe they were still coming?
A knock at the door answered that question.
“CASSIE!!!” Lexi screamed as soon as I opened the door and nearly tackled me to the ground with the fierce hug she enveloped me in. I hugged her back. It was in my nature.
“My new bff!” she said, smiling.
“Wow, your previous one must not have been a very good bff if I’ve usurped the title with a couple days of fun and some weed gummies,” I joked.
“You didn’t! My former bff has been upgraded to my boyfriend!” Lexi exclaimed and grinned happily while gesturing towards Ky.
“Oh wow, look at you, got the label and all, eh tiger?” I said to Ky and hugged him. He was smiling deliriously.
“Eh, kind of. We’re still not really doing the label thing,” Ky said. “We just agreed that we’re partners and whatever label we feel in the moment is fine. As long as we’re together, what we call it isn’t important. Apparently tonight I’m Lexi’s boyfriend.”
“That feels like it fits you two,” I said. I couldn’t help but smile. Whatever my feelings of disappointment were, Lexi and Ky were a great couple and their warmth made me happy.
“It offers a certain level of ... flexibility that we find appealing,” Ky said.
“Cool, well I’m super happy for you guys, because I can tell you’re right for each other,” I said.
“That we are, aren’t we, schnookums?” Lexi said mischievously.
“Jesus fucking christ. You’ve created a monster,” Ky moaned to me.
We got rolling on dinner. Lexi popped a bottle of Riesling then kept an eye on the quinoa. I prepped the chicken and got it in the oven. Ky chopped the veggies. Conversation was easy. The distribution of labor was fair. I was getting the same feeling I’d had on Thursday night: sure, we’d just met, but Ky and Lexi felt like the lifelong friends I never knew I needed.
“You have to work tomorrow, Cassie?” Ky asked.
“Eh, not really. During the growing season I typically have to on weekends. Nature doesn’t give a shit what day of the week it is. But this time of year, when I’m just doing maintenance on the vines, I don’t have to. Got something in mind?” I asked.
“Not necessarily. We’ve got some more tastings scheduled, you interested in tagging along?” Ky offered.
Lexi sighed theatrically. “Seriously, already inviting pretty girls to crash our romantic dates, pookie?” she teased.
Nice. Lexi thought I was pretty.
“I truly fucking despise you,” Ky said. Lexi laughed happily, skipped over to where Ky was standing and pulled him down for a passionate kiss.
Strangest fucking couple I’d ever met. But damned cute.
“Right then, my favorite rapscallion’s interjections aside, want to hang out tomorrow?” Ky asked.
“Ooooo, good one, Lexicon approves!” Lexi exclaimed.
“I’m down for sure!” The words were out of my mouth before I could even think. That seemed like it happened a lot around Lexi and Ky.
“Well, should we keep these wine tasting reservations? Are these good places?” Lexi asked. She read off the names of three wineries. They were ok spots, but nothing life changing.
“Eh, they’re not bad,” I said.
“But not good either?” Lexi asked.
“I wouldn’t say that. I just feel like for your last day in Northern California there are better options,” I said.
I made eye contact with Ky. He nodded. “Marin County,” we said at the same time.
“Whoa! Creepy! Did you hack my boyfriend’s brain?” Lexi asked.
We all laughed. Yup, definitely my people.
Over dinner we hashed out a plan for Saturday. Lexi had some sort of sportsball thing she wanted to watch involving something called Aston Villa that meant we couldn’t get on the road until about 9:15.
That was way too late for us to find parking at the Muir Woods National Monument, so we agreed we’d park in Sausalito and take the shuttle up. I’d only seen the towering redwoods twice since moving to Northern California and was excited to again. I suspected Ky, and especially Lexi, would love them.
