Mike pressed his back against the hallway wall, the drywall cool through his polo. His heart was a fist pounding against his sternum.
The floorboards creaked under O’Maley’s loafers; closer, closer; and Mike held his breath, counting the footsteps like he used to count cards in Atlantic City.
The door clicked shut.
O’Maley rounded the corner and stopped dead.
For one suspended moment, two men stared at each other in the dim hallway. O’Maley’s face was still flushed, his hair mussed, his polo clinging to the sweat on his chest. The smell of sex rolled off him in waves. Mike’s hand was still pressed against the front of his shorts, the evidence of his own arousal impossible to miss.
“What the hell, man.” Mike’s voice came out hoarse, barely above a whisper. “That’s Jeff’s daughter.”
The words landed like a bucket of ice water. O’Maley’s expression crumpled, the wild, eyed satisfaction draining away, replaced by something raw and white. Sober terror.
His mouth opened. Closed.
The bourbon courage that had carried him into that bedroom evaporated, and for a beat he was just a man caught in the act, facing the judgment of someone who could end his life with a single sentence to the wrong person.
Mike watched the fear bloom across O’Maley’s face. Watched him process the implications. Jeff finding out. The friendship dissolving. The golf group fractured. Everything they’d built over years of beers and birdies and bad jokes, gone.
Then something shifted.
The corner of O’Maley’s mouth twitched. The terror didn’t disappear, but it settled, melted into something darker. Something knowing.
His gaze dropped to Mike’s shorts, to the tent still straining against the khaki fabric, and when his eyes lifted again, they were gleaming.
“I warmed her up for you, you degenerate.”
The grin spread wide across O’Maley’s stubbled jaw. No shame. No apology. Just the roguish charm of a man who’d stopped running from what he wanted and had decided, in the space of a heartbeat, to drag someone else down with him.
Mike’s throat worked. No words came.
O’Maley clapped him on the shoulder. The grip was firm, conspiratorial, a passing of a torch neither of them had asked for.
Then he walked down the hall, his footsteps steady now, a man who’d made his peace with damnation.
The sliding door opened and closed. Distant laughter. Mike was alone.
He stood frozen against the wall, his pulse hammering in his ears, his dick still pressing insistently against his zipper. The hallway stretched in both directions; toward the patio, toward safety, toward the version of himself that hadn’t watched his friend’s daughter get fucked by his friend. And the other way. Toward Denise’s room. Toward the door that was probably still ajar, the lamplight still spilling through the crack. Toward his own appetite, waiting to be fed.
His feet moved before he gave them permission.
The floorboards creaked under his weight; third step, then the spot just before the threshold; and there it was. The door.
Still cracked. Still spilling warm gold light into the dark hallway.
Mike pushed it open with one finger.
Denise was exactly where O’Maley had left her.
Naked.
The sheet pulled up to her chest, her blonde hair tangled across the pillow, her thighs pressed together beneath the thin cotton.
Mike’s hand trembled as he raised it to the door. The wood felt warm beneath his knuckles. He knocked; three quick raps, barely louder than his own heartbeat.
On the other side, Denise’s smile bloomed in the lamplight. She’d known. From the moment O’Maley’s footsteps faded down the hall, she’d known he would be back.
“Come in,” she called out, her voice honeyed with certainty. “I knew you would be back.”
Mike pushed the door open. The crack widened, spilling gold light across his face, fifty-three years of wanting and waiting, etched into every line. He stepped inside and let the door drift shut behind him, the latch clicking home with a sound like a seal being broken.
“Denise.”
His voice was steadier than he felt.
“I was looking for the bathroom.”
Denise’s eyes went wide for just a heartbeat, a flicker of genuine surprise that rippled across her features like wind over still water. Her lips parted, and for that suspended second, she was just a girl caught off guard, the mask of composure slipping.
Then the surprise melted. It softened at the edges first, curving into something warmer, something slower. Her eyes darkened, pupils swelling as they traced the line of his body, the nervous tension in his shoulders, the way his hand still hovered near the doorframe like he might bolt. She saw it all. And she fed on it.
The smirk that spread across her face was unhurried. Predatory. It started at one corner of her mouth and bloomed outward like a flower opening to the sun, except there was nothing innocent about it. This was the smile of a woman who had just realized the game had changed and she was still holding all the cards.
She let the sheet slip a fraction of an inch lower, not enough to reveal anything new, but enough to remind him exactly where his eyes should be.
“No you weren’t,” she purred, the words dripping with honey and heat. Her voice was a low, knowing thing that seemed to curl around him from across the room. “But I’m glad you’re here anyway, Mike.”
“Denise.”
His voice was steadier than he felt.
“I was looking for the bathroom.”
“No you weren’t.”
The words landed softly. Not an accusation. Just a fact. Mike’s hand tightened on the doorframe, his knuckles going pale.
“How many of you are out there?” She pushed herself up on one elbow. The sheet slipped, exposing the pale curve of her shoulder, the swell of one breast. “How many of you have been watching?”
