The sliding door whispered shut behind him, and the July heat swallowed Joe whole.

The patio was exactly as he’d left it. Mike was mid-story, one hand gesturing with a beer bottle, the other planted on his hip.

Reinhart sat with his arms crossed, his weathered face unreadable.

Washingon had his chair tilted back against the house, water bottle balanced on his knee.

Kowalski had joined the group at some point, a fresh beer sweating in his hand.

And Jeff.

Jeff was folded into his patio chair like a man who’d been unplugged from the wall. His chin rested on his chest, his Yankees cap askew, the bourbon glass still clutched in his fingers at an angle that defied physics. A soft snore rattled through him, and Mike paused his story to point at the unconscious host.

“There he goes. Right on schedule.”

The laughter that followed felt like it was happening in another room. Joe’s skin was still electric, still buzzing with the memory of Denise’s fingers digging into his shoulders, her heels locked behind his thighs. The guilt was already climbing up his throat.

“Joey!” Mike’s voice boomed across the patio. “Do you know what you started?”

Caught off guard, Joe let out a delayed, uneasy laugh—the kind that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “What do you mean?”

Mike clapped a heavy hand on Joe’s shoulder, the weight of it settling like an anchor.

“You know how it works, Joey. One man cracks open the door, and suddenly everyone’s got a secret they need to unload. You went in there looking clean, but you came out looking guilty as sin. Now we’re all just waiting for the next guy to take his turn.” He tipped his beer toward the house, where O’Maley had disappeared. “Hell, O’Maley’s already in there, trying to find a place to bury his.”

Joe opened his mouth to answer, but the words came out wrong—thin and brittle, like a snapped guitar string. “Yeah ... couldn’t help it.” He cleared his throat, tried again, but the guilt had already lodged itself there. “When you need to go...” His voice cracked, splintering apart as he forced the rest out. “ ... you need to go.”

He couldn’t stay here. Couldn’t stand another minute on this patio with Jeff snoring three feet away and the phantom sensation of Denise still clinging to him.

“Thinking of going, I’ve gotta head out,” he announced, too loud, too sudden.

Mike stopped mid-sentence. “What? It’s barely ten. We’ve got another six-pack and Jeff’s bourbon isn’t going to drink itself.”

“Early morning. Work stuff.” Joe was already backing toward the corner of the patio, already fishing his keys from his pocket. The metal bit into his palm. “Thanks for the round, Mike. Great seeing everyone.”

“Joey come on. One more”

“I’ll catch you next time.”

The words echoed. Next time. He’d been saying that for four and a half months. Next time, next time, next time. A man at the poker game, all in on a lie.

Reinhart raised a hand in a lazy wave.

Washingon nodded once, his calm gaze revealing nothing.

Kowalski mumbled farewell.

Mike looked disappointed but not surprised.

Joe turned before anyone could see his face crack. Crossed the patio in six strides. Edged past the grill, still radiating heat from the burgers Jeff had flipped a lifetime ago, and followed the side path to the driveway. The gravel crunched under his shoes, too loud, too sharp. Every sound felt amplified. Every shadow felt like it was watching.

His car was the third in the row. He hit the unlock button, yanked the door open, dropped into the driver’s seat. The leather was hot from the day’s sun, and the steering wheel burned his palms, but he didn’t care. He jammed the key into the ignition. The engine turned over. The headlights cut through the dark.

He didn’t look back at the house.

He couldn’t.
