The air in the bedroom was thick with something that had been building since Mexico.
Joe could feel it pressing against his skin, warm and close.
Denise didn’t move from the bed. She just watched him, her blue eyes tracking his face, her chest rising and falling beneath that pale pink lace.
The lamp on her nightstand cast shadows across her collarbone, the faint tan line from Mexico still visible above the edge of the bra.
“You just going to stand there?” Her voice was quiet. Not a whisper; whispers implied secrecy, and there was nothing secret about the way she was looking at him. “You’ve been standing in doorways for four and a half months.”
“That’s not”
“It is.” She shifted on the bed, propping herself up on one elbow. The movement made the lace strain across her breasts.
“I’ve been waiting. Every time Dad invited you over. Every time you made up some excuse. I knew you’d come eventually.”
Through the window, Joe could hear the distant rumble of male laughter from the patio.
Mike’s booming voice. O’Maley’s wheeze.
Jeff was probably unconscious by now, folded into his patio chair with his bourbon glass dangling.
“I shouldn’t be in here,” Joe said.
“Probably not.” Denise’s lips curved. Not quite a smile. “But you are.”
She reached toward him. Not far, she didn’t have to. Her fingers hooked into the front pocket of his golf shorts and tugged.
The pull was gentle but insistent, a current he’d been fighting against since the moment she’d walked onto that patio in her cutoffs and yellow crop top.
Joe’s knee hit the edge of the mattress. The bed dipped. He caught himself with one hand planted beside her hip, and suddenly she was right there, close enough that he could smell her shampoo, something floral and clean, close enough that he could see the faint freckles scattered across the bridge of her nose.
“There,” she breathed. “That wasn’t so hard.”
Her hand left his pocket. Slid up his chest. His polo shirt was damp from the July heat, and her palm pressed flat against his sternum, right over the hammering of his heart.
“You’re nervous.” She said it with a kind of wonder. “I didn’t think you got nervous.”
“Denise.”
Her name came out strangled. “Your dad is”
“Asleep. He’s been matching you drink for drink all night. You know what happens when he hits his limit.”
Her fingers curled into the fabric of his shirt. “Nobody’s coming to check on me. Nobody’s coming to look for you. It’s just us.”
She pulled him down.
The mattress swallowed them both, springs groaning, and Joe’s body settled against hers before his brain could formulate another protest.
Her legs shifted to make room for him.
Denise’s hand found his wrist. Her grip was surprisingly strong. Surprisingly certain.
“I’ve been thinking about this,” she murmured, guiding his arm downward, “since that last night at the resort.”
She guided his hand deliberately, her palm warm over his knuckles. The tips of his fingers brushed her thigh, just below the waistband of the thong.
She was smooth there. Warm. The muscle beneath her skin tensed at his touch.
“Every night,” she continued, her voice softening into something frayed at the edges, “I’d lie in my room and think about what happened. What I wanted to happen.”
Her hand tightened on his. Pressed his fingers harder against her skin. The crest of her hip bone, the soft dip of her inner thigh, the heat building beneath the lace.
Joe’s breath had gone shallow. He was aware of everything, the hum of the air conditioning, the distant pop of a firework in some neighbor’s backyard, the way Denise’s pupils had dilated until her blue irises were just thin rings.
“I’m not a kid,” she said. “I haven’t been a kid since before Mexico. You know that. You saw me.”
“Mexico was a mistake,” Joe said, the words scraping out of him. “I shouldn’t have”
“You shouldn’t have what?” Denise’s grip on his wrist didn’t loosen.
She lifted her hips. Just slightly. Just enough that his fingers slipped beneath the edge of the lace, and the heat of her was right there, radiating against his knuckles.
“But I don’t want you to care right now,” she whispered. “I want you to stop thinking.”
Her hand released his wrist.
Joe didn’t pull away. He didn’t move at all. For a long moment they were frozen there, her on her back, her blonde hair spread across the pillow, her chest rising and falling in that pale pink bra. Him propped above her, one hand buried between her thighs, the other still planted on the mattress beside her hip.
The patio door slid open somewhere in the distance. A brief blast of male voices, Mike shouting something, Kowalski’s laugh, before the door slid shut again. Someone going inside for more beer. Someone who wasn’t Jeff, because Jeff was definitely asleep by now.
Joe couldn’t stand it any longer. The restraint he’d been clinging to since Mexico finally snapped, clean and sharp as a broken guitar string. He pulled his hand back, and Denise’s breath hitched at the sudden loss of contact.
