‘Oh, of course,’ Alex growled in quiet triumph, noticing my state but staying still—unlike my fingers, which had abandoned my clit to slide inside me, moving there instead. ‘Go on, lecture me about your hang-ups. Shall I remind you how you dragged a wounded wolf into your home yesterday? You had no idea what you were getting yourself into. Though you did tease me rather magnificently, Sasha. Wandering around naked, not giving a damn ... Do you even have the faintest clue how intoxicating, how utterly irresistible you smell to a beast? Combined with your bare body ... It was pure torture. I had no choice. Holding back was physically impossible—I had to shift right there in front of you, to stake my claim on this territory.’

I froze, feeling his words and the tight, hot knot inside me finally snap into place. My little veterinary experiment in keeping a dominant in check was clearly reaching its critical point.

Oops. Lost in thought and focused on my sensations, I blurted out exactly what I shouldn’t have—though the start of the sentence had been perfectly decent: ‘I was wearing a dressing gown—after some grey mug soaked my clothes. Though he is right about one thing. I wonder how long I can last? I’m afraid I’ll be in for another round of sex this morning. Or whatever they call it—mating?’

Realising what I’d just said, instead of blushing, I merely lifted my chin defiantly, watching as Alex’s amber eyes darkened to the colour of strong black tea. My fingers continued to trace the sensitive contours between my thighs, slow and hypnotic. Then my lower abdomen clenched in such a brutal, relentless spasm that my vision blurred for a moment. Holding back my own release, trying to outmanoeuvre the dominant on his own turf, had become physically impossible.

I gasped sharply, throwing my head back and pressing my skull against the cool wall. A short, sharp wave of orgasm shot through my body. I let out a low, drawn-out moan, losing control of reality for a few precious seconds.

And those few seconds were more than enough for Alex.

His iron self-control collapsed without a sound. Alex dropped to his knees in front of me, right onto the discarded bath towel. His huge, hot hands possessively slid under my knees, lifting my legs in one fluid motion and draping them over his broad shoulders.

‘To hell with the rules,’ he growled roughly.

Before I could protest or even draw a breath, his hot, rough tongue touched my still-throbbing skin. I instinctively grabbed his thick, coarse hair, intending to push him away—but instead, I only pulled him closer. What he was doing was beyond anything I’d imagined. A wild, primal predator’s instinct guided him: he licked me hungrily, deeply, with some kind of frenzied, possessive ecstasy. My mocking zoological theory finally gave way to pure, concentrated practice.

A new wave of scorching anticipation began rising rapidly from the base of my spine. I realised with absolute clarity: if I let him bring me to a second climax, we wouldn’t be leaving this kitchen until evening.

‘Oh no you don’t, wolf-boy—back in your kennel!’ I whispered, gathering the last scraps of my willpower. Yet at the same time, I clamped his head tightly between my thighs, pressing him even closer, as if my body had decided for me that words were nothing but empty noise.

Alex heard everything. And instead of pulling away, he only pressed his tongue deeper into my most sensitive spot, pressing, circling, penetrating—this shameless refusal to obey my words finished me off completely. The tight knot in my lower abdomen, already stretched to its limit, snapped with deafening force.

The orgasm hit me like an avalanche. I cried out—short, rough, unable to hold back the sound—and my body arched, pressing his head even tighter against me. Wave after wave rolled through me, making my muscles clench and pulse uncontrollably. I could feel the moisture gushing out, hot and abundant, as his tongue continued its work—absorbing, licking, drinking, not missing a single drop, as if it were the most precious nectar. His deep, satisfied growl vibrated directly against my core, intensifying and prolonging each sweet spasm.

The spasms began to fade. I collapsed limply, sliding down the wall, and only his hands on my hips kept me from falling. I breathed heavily, raggedly, with coloured spots still swimming before my eyes. Between my legs, he still gently, almost tenderly, traced with his tongue, gathering the last remnants of my pleasure, and I could feel his breath tickling my sensitive skin.

Finally, he lifted his head. His chin and lips glistened wetly, his amber eyes burning with triumphant, sated fire. He licked his lips—slowly, clearly savouring my taste—and smiled broadly, rather pleased with himself.

‘That tongue of yours is something else,’ I breathed, trying to catch my breath. ‘Didn’t I just say something about a kennel? It was perfectly clear: no touching. But not only did you touch—you went and conducted an unauthorised gynaecological exam. For that, Alexei, you deserve a severe punishment.’

Alex slowly rose to his feet, towering over me almost to the ceiling. He lazily propped his hip against the long-suffering kitchen table and smirked rather smugly.

‘And what kind of punishment does the offender get, Sasha?’ he asked, his voice laced with amusement. ‘Are you going to make me wash the dishes again?’

‘Worse,’ I said, rising—or rather, sliding off the chair and steadying myself on legs still trembling from the experience. And right on cue, my stomach let out a pitiful growl. I couldn’t blame it. The amount of energy we’d expended in the last twenty-four hours was hardly covered by yesterday’s scrambled eggs and coffee. A plan formed instantly. ‘You’re coming shopping with me. I need to go to the supermarket—you were the one who mentioned the empty fridge yesterday. So you’re coming. Are you a gentleman or not?’

Alex froze for a second, then deliberately dropped his gaze downward—at his completely naked, muscular body, which boasted nothing in the way of clothing except for a few scars. Then he returned his gaze to me, eloquently raising one eyebrow.

‘Shall I remind you, stern human medic, that the only personal belongings I have are the air around me?’ he remarked reasonably. ‘Or is it customary in your refined society to go grocery shopping in Adam’s costume?’

‘No clothes, you say?’ I laughed brightly, backing into the hallway. ‘Well, my inner vet can solve that problem in a jiffy. You do have another, decidedly non-human form. There are nuances there too, but for quadrupeds in the city, there are very clear rules of decency.’

Alex frowned. ‘What rules?’

‘For a proper walk in a public place, we’ll need three things: a strict collar, a sturdy leash, and—just to be safe—an XL muzzle ... so you don’t accidentally eat the cashier!’

As I said this, I slowly backed out of the kitchen. And without waiting for the wolf to grasp the full scale of my cunning, I laughed and dashed deeper into the hallway.

‘Sasha, damn your devious little mind!’ came his indignant, rolling growl from the kitchen, though it carried a laugh too. ‘A muzzle?! I’ll put you on a leash!’

Laughing, I slammed my bedroom door shut, turned the latch, and leaned against the wooden surface with my back. My heart was pounding like mad, but inside, an incredible light triumph spread through me.

Having calmed my frantically pounding heart, I opened the wardrobe and quickly began choosing something to wear, listening to the grumbling behind the door with half an ear. A skirt, a simple long-sleeved top, no bra—to hide the bite mark on my shoulder—and my favourite jacket. I glanced at myself in the mirror. A bruise beneath my collarbone, swollen lips, hair still damp from the shower. An excellent look for a trip to the supermarket. Then my eyes shifted to the drying rack, where my underwear was hanging. A smile appeared on my lips. I wasn’t as wild as my favourite friend, of course, but sometimes I went without underwear just like she did. And today, I didn’t particularly feel like putting any on either.

I stepped into the corridor.

Alex was standing by the kitchen door, leaning against the wall. His arms were folded across his chest, he was still completely naked, and it clearly didn’t bother him in the slightest. But something about his posture had changed. The playfulness was gone. He was looking at me seriously—without laughter, without that husky edge to his voice, without the golden fire in his eyes that I had already grown accustomed to that morning.

“Sash,” he said quietly. “Sit down for a second.”

I stopped.

“What happened?”

“Please, sit.”

I lowered myself onto the edge of the sofa. He sat opposite me on the coffee table—upright, elbows resting on his knees, his gaze steady. Naked in the middle of my living room, yet looking as though he was about to say something that would change everything.

“I should have told you this yesterday,” he began. “But at first I didn’t want to frighten you. Then everything got complicated...” He paused for a second. “Anyway, that was just an excuse. I’m sorry.”

I remained silent, looking at him. An unpleasant tightness gripped my chest—the feeling that something bad was coming.

“You’re in danger, Sash. Because of me.”

The words landed simply and heavily, without any preamble.

What if they decided I already knew too much? The anxious thought surfaced again, only this time it was clearer and far more frightening.

“Our pack guards its secret very carefully. People who find out about us...” He stopped again, and I could see that he was choosing his words carefully, not to hide anything, but to avoid frightening me more than necessary. “People like that don’t usually get the chance to tell anyone else. Do you understand what I mean?”

A fragment of a conversation I had overheard in the café suddenly flashed through my memory: “Photographer ... took night landscapes ... found in the river three days later...” At the time, I hadn’t thought anything of it. Now everything suddenly fell into place.

“I understand,” I said quietly.

“They saw you at the viewpoint the night before last. Our people know how to read traces—not just physical ones. Scent, behaviour, route. They already know a human girl was there. They don’t know exactly what you saw or heard yet. But if you show up there again...”

He didn’t finish. He didn’t need to.

Something inside me tightened—not from fear, but from realisation. Yesterday’s insane nighttime story about a rational wolf had suddenly acquired consequences I hadn’t anticipated. Serious consequences. I imagined silent shadows following me through the streets, and for a moment my fingers went numb.

“And what am I supposed to do?” I asked, trying to keep my voice from trembling.

“Don’t go there.” His voice was even, without apology. “The viewpoint, that forest, the roads leading up to the hill—it’s all off-limits to you now. Permanently.”

“Permanently.” I allowed myself to feel the weight of that word for a second. The little viewpoint with its spreading pine tree, from which half the horizon was visible beneath the moonlit sky. The warm August air, the tea gone cold in the flask, and amber eyes in the darkness. All of it was forbidden now.

I was silent for several seconds, digesting what he had said. Questions churned through my head: How many more places would end up on that list? How far did their influence extend? What would happen if I accidentally broke the prohibition?

“Okay,” I said. “I won’t go.”

He looked at me carefully, as though checking whether I truly understood or was merely nodding along.

“This isn’t a request, Sash.”

“I understand.” I met his gaze. “You said it. I heard you. I won’t go.”

He exhaled slightly. Barely perceptibly.

“I’ll come to you myself. In a day or two, as soon as I can.” He paused. “But there’s one more thing you need to know. About today.”

“I’m listening.”

“I can only shift once every twenty-four hours. If I shift now, I’ll remain a wolf until tomorrow morning. I won’t be able to change back.” One corner of his mouth lifted. “So if you really want to go to the shops ... you’re going to need that XL muzzle after all.”
