The walk wasn’t working.
Joe’s legs had carried him six miles, past the rocky outcropping and back, and the guilt still sat in his chest like a stone. The images wouldn’t stop. Her skin in the moonlight. The sound of her breath catching. The way she’d said his name.
He turned toward the pool.
The bar was quiet. A few early drinkers scattered along the submerged stools, their conversations low, their sunglasses hiding hungover eyes.
Joe pulled himself onto a stool at the far end. The water was cool against his chest, a small relief.
The bartender appeared. Same young man from yesterday.
“Whiskey. Neat.”
The glass arrived. He drank it in two swallows, the burn spreading through his chest. He set the glass down and the bartender refilled it without asking.
The second went slower. He let the ice dilute it, watched the amber light catch the glass, tried to empty his mind.
It didn’t work.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw her. The sheet tangled around her waist. Her blonde hair spread across the pillow. The soft curve of her hip.
He finished the second and ordered a third.
The sun climbed higher. The pool began to fill.
A group of women in bright bikinis took over the far end, their laughter carrying across the water.
Joe didn’t look.
The third whiskey became a fourth. Then a fifth. The edges of his thoughts began to blur, the sharp points of guilt softening into something dull and distant.
“Joe!”
The voice came from behind him.
He turned, the movement slower than intended. Jeff was walking along the pool’s edge, a wide grin on his face. He reached the bar and pulled himself onto the stool next to Joe.
“Didn’t expect to find you here,” Jeff said, signaling the bartender. “Thought you’d be recovering from that run.”
Joe took a sip of his drink. “Decided to switch strategies.”
Jeff laughed.
The bartender arrived. Jeff ordered a beer, then turned back, clapping Joe on the shoulder. “Listen. I never got to properly thank you. Last night was—” He let out a long breath. “It was exactly what we needed.”
Joe’s hand tightened around his glass.
“Sarah and I haven’t had a night like that in months,” Jeff continued. “Maybe longer. We just—we talked. For hours. No interruptions. No worrying about Denise hearing us.” He shook his head, still grinning. “You’re a lifesaver, man.”
Joe nodded. He could feel the whiskey swirling in his stomach, the heat rising up his neck. “Glad it worked out.”
“It really did.” Jeff took a long pull from his beer. “Anyway, I was thinking. Denise should probably move her stuff back this morning. Give you your room back.”
Joe’s pulse jumped. “It’s fine. No rush.”
Jeff’s eyebrows lifted. “You sure? We’ve already imposed enough.”
“I’m sure.” The words came out rougher than intended. “I don’t use the couch. She’s not in the way.”
Jeff studied him for a moment, then shrugged. “If you’re sure. I’ll talk to Sarah, figure out the best time to—”
“Don’t rush her.” Joe took another drink, the whiskey burning his throat. “Let her sleep in. She’s on vacation.”
Jeff laughed again. “You sound like her mother.” He raised his beer. “Alright. We’ll figure it out later.”
Joe’s thoughts drifted. If you only knew. The phrase echoed in his skull, a dark joke only he could hear. He pushed the glass toward the bartender for another refill.
On the other side of the resort, Denise and Sarah sat at a small table near the buffet terrace. The morning crowd had thinned. A plate of half-eaten pastries sat between them, the coffee growing cold.
