The morning light spilled through the sliding glass doors, golden and warm. Joe blinked against it, the unfamiliar ceiling taking a moment to register. No hum of fluorescent lights. No distant printer. Just the sound of waves breaking somewhere

outside.

He stretched, the sheets sliding against his skin. The air conditioner hummed softly, but the room already held the promise of heat. His phone read 8:47.

Mexico.

A shower washed the travel grime away. The water pressure was excellent, the soap smelled like lime and salt. He stood there longer than necessary, letting the heat work into his shoulders.

By the time he stepped out, the mirror had fogged completely. He wiped a circle clear and studied his reflection. The same face. The same tired eyes. But something felt different. Lighter.

He dressed in khaki shorts and a pale blue linen shirt, left it unbuttoned at the collar. The walk to the buffet took him past manicured gardens and stone pathways. Palm fronds rustled overhead.

The buffet was enormous. Endless chafing dishes, an omelet station, fresh fruit piled in geometric towers.

He loaded a plate with scrambled eggs, chorizo, and a thick slice of papaya. Found a table on the terrace overlooking the ocean.

The breeze carried salt and something floral. He ate slowly, watching a catamaran glide across the turquoise water. Coffee arrived without him asking. A woman in a white uniform refilled his cup and smiled.

After breakfast, he walked.

No destination. Just movement. He traced the perimeter of the resort, past the tennis courts and the fitness center, past a small chapel with a domed roof. The path curved along the beach, where early risers had already claimed spots under palapas. A couple played paddle ball near the waterline. A child built a sandcastle with intense concentration.

Joe kept walking.

He found the main pool, sprawling and kidney-shaped, with a swim-up bar at one end. Empty chairs lined the edges, towels draped over some, books marking territories. He continued past it, noting the shaded areas, the spots with the best sun.

Around noon, his legs felt heavy. The heat had climbed, pressing down on his shoulders. He circled back to his room to change into his trunks then to the pool, where he found a lounger near the middle section, and settled in.

The book was a crime novel he’d grabbed from the airport. Predictable, but comfortable. He read a chapter, finished his first beer, and set the empty can on the small table between chairs.

The water looked cool. Inviting.

He stood, stripped off his shirt, and walked to the edge. The concrete was warm under his feet. He stepped in, the water rising past his calves, his knees, his waist. Cool and clean. He pushed off, gliding into the deeper section.

The water swallowed the heat. He floated for a moment, eyes closed, the sun painting red against his lids.

A voice cut through.

“Joe! Catch!”

He opened his eyes, turning toward the sound. The football was already in the air, a dark spiral against the bright sky. Time compressed. His hands shot up, fingers finding the laces, pulling it down against his chest.

Jeff stood at the opposite end of the pool, water lapping at his chest, a wide grin splitting his face.

“Thought you might be thirsty for something other than beer,” Jeff called.

Joe tossed the ball back, a lazy spiral that Jeff snagged one-handed. “You’ve been practicing.”

“Denise and I threw around last spring. Kept me sharp.”

Jeff threw again, harder this time. The ball stung Joe’s palms when he caught it. He threw it back, feeling the muscles in his shoulder wake up.

They fell into a rhythm. Lobs and spirals, the water slowing their movements. Joe felt the tension drain from his neck, his back. The beer buzz had faded, replaced by something cleaner.

Sarah and Denise were on loungers nearby. Sarah had a magazine open on her lap, but her eyes followed the game. Denise sat cross-legged, phone in hand, sunglasses hiding her expression. She was wearing a black one-piece, modest but clinging

to her frame in ways that made Joe look away.

The hour passed quickly. Sweat mixed with pool water. Laughter punctuated the throws. Jeff missed one and Joe had to chase it to the edge, scooping it up before it escaped into the gutter.

“Alright, alright,” Sarah called out, her voice carrying across the water. “It’s almost two. We should grab something before the hangry sets in.”

Jeff paddled toward the edge. “She’s right. Dinner’s not until eight.”

Joe tread water, catching his breath. “You guys go ahead. I’m gonna hang out, grab another drink.”

“You sure?” Jeff asked, pulling himself onto the edge.

“Positive. I had a big breakfast.” Joe waved them off. “Enjoy. I’ll see you at dinner.”
