The fluorescent hum of the office was the only sound. Cubicles stretched in gray rows, each one a tomb of spreadsheets and deadlines. Joe’s fingers hovered over the keyboard, his eyes fixed on the quarterly report that had consumed his morning.
The numbers blurred.
His phone buzzed against the desk.
A glance at the screen. Jeff’s name.
Joe picked it up, thumb swiping the notification. The text was short.

He’d watched her grow up from a quiet, awkward kid into something else entirely. Jeff’s daughter. A girl with long blonde hair and an athletic build that she hid under oversized sweaters. Nineteen now. Always kept to herself at family barbecues, eyes down, earbuds in.
Joe set the phone down. The office air conditioner hummed. Somewhere a printer churned.
His mind wandered.
He remembered last Christmas.
Jeff’s house. The living room was loud with relatives, but Denise sat on the far end of the couch, knees tucked to her chest. She was wearing gray leggings and a loose sweater that slipped off one shoulder.
Joe had watched her adjust it, watched her fingers linger on the fabric. She’d caught his gaze for a second. Just a second. Then she looked away.
He picked the phone up again.
Whole family trip? Wouldn’t I be a third wheel?
Jeff responded with a laughing emoji.
Nah. Sarah wants someone to keep you company. She thinks you work too much. And Denise could use someone to talk to. She’s been quiet lately.
Joe’s thumb traced the edge of the phone.
Quiet. That was one word for it.
He typed back.
Let me check my schedule.
He didn’t need to check his schedule. The weekend was empty. That was the problem. Saturdays were for laundry, for takeout, for staring at the ceiling wondering if this was all there was.
Mexico.
Cancún, probably.
All-inclusive resort. Tequila by the pool.
Sun that burned the tension out of your shoulders.
And Denise.
He shook the thought loose. She was Jeff’s daughter. Nineteen. An adult by law, but still a kid in so many ways. Sheltered. Introverted. The kind of girl who blushed when the waiter asked for her drink order.
Joe set the phone down again.
The report glowed on his monitor. Numbers that didn’t matter. A meeting at three that he’d forget by five.
His phone buzzed one more time.
Come on. It’ll be fun. Sarah already booked the extra room. You’d be doing me a favor.
Joe read the message twice.
A favor.
He thought about the resort. Late nights on the balcony. The ocean dark and endless. A shared bottle of wine. The way the moonlight catches blonde hair.
His fingers moved before his brain caught up.
Fine. I’m in.
Jeff responded with a series of celebratory emojis. A thumbs-up. A beer glass. A plane.
Joe smiled despite himself.
The rest of the workday passed in a haze. He submitted the report, attended the meeting, nodded at the right moments. His mind was already on the beach.
