What with finagling the hand pump, then hauling buckets to a black iron stove’s flat top, it’d taken Caleb a while to fill the massive metal tub in the center of the hotel’s bathing room. But ... well worth the endeavor.
Skin aglow and tingling from the brush in his grip, a sigh escaped as he reclined in the heated water. With spine resting against the sloped side, he glanced at a nearby wooden stool. From atop it, a small gas lantern cast shadows across the timbered walls.
While the searing soaked deeper, his mind wandered. The shadowy lines on the wood morphed into two delightful sets of white-clad shapes. Quiet giggles. Twin pairs of vivid blue. In the barn, the magic of Delilah’s curves, lengthening under the dress as the widow had stretched and bent.
“Shoulda...” The whisper trailed off as Eliza’s smile appeared, and his brows knitted. “Nope, shouldn’t have done a damn thing.”
A laugh escaped when Helga’s tiny frame snuck into his thoughts. Plus, her husband’s stoic face.
“Takes all kinds.”
The next chortle died in his throat. Why? Eliza, again. Made no sense; she wasn’t his wife. One paid-for roll in a narrow bed used by so many other men meant nothing.
Click.
His breathing staggered; behind him, the door handle was turning.
Even as muscles tensed, a creak echoed. The door was being opened!
“Hey, somebody’s in here!” he called out, twisting to look over his shoulder.
Fire piled high atop a head. A regal visage wearing the most amazing grin.
“Teacup?” he mumbled.
While his heart thumped and lips smacked shut, the figure clad in gauzy snow slipped into the room. Unlike him, the visitor made sure to throw the bolt before walking to the tub. After sliding the lantern aside, she placed a bottle and two shot glasses on the stool. The creep of the hem up a slender thigh snatched his focus, not that the thin translucence left much to the imagination.
“Evening, Caleb.”
Although he began to form a reply, his brain froze. She was turning as the gauziness drifted downward to reveal ... perfection. Skin of unblemished porcelain. Perky cones, topped with sharp coral, stood proud on her chest. A flat stomach with well-defined muscles and a narrow waist. No wild patch, but a neat tuft of matching fire above...
He gulped, then gulped louder while the slender beauty leaned to fill the two glasses. When she held one out to him, his brain stayed frozen, but an arm reacted, rising to take it from her.
“Guess you like what you see,” she said with a chuckle.
“Huh?”
“You ain’t hollerin’ no more.” Another laugh, such a light, sweet sound. After bolting down her shot, she smacked bright red lips. “Nor told me to leave.”
“You...”
His voice died when a shapely leg rose, giving him a better view of a glistening peach. The room began to blur as she stepped into the far end of the tub between his spread legs. Once inside, she bent to adjust the lantern, lowering its glow. With a smile through slender, dangling wisps of flame, the lean delight refilled her glass.
“Gonna drink that?”
At her gesture to his whiskey, he flicked the booze to his lips and braced for fire to scour his throat. Never happened. A smoother warmth, bearing a hint of aged wood, drew a slow breath from him.
As the amused princess settled into the water, he found himself entranced by her disappearing curves. When a small hand arrived at his empty glass, he struggled to loosen his grip. Muscles refused to respond ... well, one did. But the dimness and water kept secret the effect of her proximity.
He murmured, “How did ... Why?”
“Women talk,” she replied, pushing a refilled tumbler into his fingers.
Twin emeralds dropped to the floor, in the general direction of the front desk. That glimmer in Delly’s eyes when she’d handed him the bathing room key.
At his quiet gasp, she giggled - a wondrous sound.
“Yep. Mrs. Whitaker is ... She retains high hopes for me. Let’s this poor lost dove keep a room here.” Above a slow sip, twin jewels twinkled in the dim glow while roaming him. “Long as I don’t bring my work home.”
“Work?” He glanced down at himself, then met her gaze.
“Ain’t charging you. Just a friendly visit.”
“Friendly?”
“Mm-hmm.”
An added shrug drew his view to the gentle jiggle of both small breasts. Although a thin red eyebrow rose, she said nothing. Instead, after downing the remaining booze in a single swallow, she thumped the empty glass on the stool. Still silent, the glistening beauty lifted a sponge and a bar of soap. While not the same as used by the Andrews women, it gave off a similar delicate fragrance.
As a small hand swept over porcelain, leaving sudsy trails, he couldn’t stop swallowing. Although not a word left perfect lips, those glimmering eyes stayed on him. The only noises making it through the roaring in his skull were quiet splashes and the slow dragging slurps as the sponge roamed perfection.
All the while, he hoped she wouldn’t notice his reaction, achy and throbbing between spread thighs. When the sleekness moved, he jumped, and she giggled. After surging across the tub, she turned to settle once again with knees bent and spine curved forward before him.
Dainty fingers lifted the sponge and fragrant soap over a gleaming shoulder.
“Do my back, please.”
Gaze locked on glossy paleness, he opened his mouth several times, but words refused to come. Instead, a wobbly brain watched as he traded his empty shot glass for both items. After a quick lean to place the glass on the stool, she swept matted tresses forward to reveal a slender neck.
