After sleeping on the flight home, recovering from the night with a loudly purring, borderline insatiable Lisandra, my aching body stood before the mirror. Both hands were shaking so much that it was difficult to fix the damn tie.
While I’d given Luka a dressing down before departing, far more of my memory belonged to the delightful images and tender sensations and potent smells and wondrous tastes of his wife. Pulse still roaring, I’d let her drive me into a wall so we could share a final, passion-filled kiss as her idiot husband quivered and yipped off in the haze that wasn’t her.
My comments to her had proven even more prophetic. Though endless, my life was accelerating once again, rushing toward the unknown.
More evidence had awaited me on the phone left behind when I traveled. Texts and sneaky photos from Mandy had kept me grinning. No, none said anything of import, yet each proclaimed a continued interest in me. Alright, in truth, that was pretty damn important.
From Cinder, a slew of voice messages were just as hunger-filled. Her latest was the reason I wore a suit once more: the annual Christmas party at her home. What might happen? Not a clue, but a cheek-aching smile refused to leave my face.
Their soiree was well-attended, and cars packed the long drive plus lined every curb for several blocks. The walk let me bask in warmth unseasonable for late-December. Under the glow of twinkling stars, a moment of simplicity amid a growing swirl of madness.
Once before the front entrance, with a vibrant bouquet and a dusty bottle in hand, I paused. The muffled sounds of laughter, voices, and holiday music surged from the home. Every window was lit. Just what an ancient warrior, feeling the weight of far too many years and struggles, needed...
“A pleasant distraction,” I murmured, tapping the doorbell.
After only a brief wait, the door opened, revealing a round woman in a colorful dress of red and green swirls. A rich-tan complexion, and beneath thick gray hair woven into a loose bun, a pair of dark twinkles peered from a face graced with deep lines. After a quick scan, she pulled the door wider.
“Merry Christmas!” While slender, a gnarled hand that spoke of strength waved me inside. “Ai, not so sure where is Cynthia and Erville. Lucky I was walking by, eh?”
The broken English bore a heavy accent - Latin American.
“Yes,” I said, stepping past her.
“Those are beautiful.”
She was surveying the flowers, but those eyes narrowed as they rose to scan me once more. A strange tingle wandered my spine.
“Uh, gracias, ma’am.” I gave her my best smile. “You look lovely, and Feliz Navidad.”
Although starting to return the grin, she paused. Her gaze deepened, and that tingling became a sizzle. The dark irises flashed, but she said nothing while shutting the door. Instead, her hand directed me toward the swirling crowd.
The home was packed. With the music, laughter, and voices louder, eyes, full of curiosity, tracked my movements.
Time stumbled to a halt.
Cinder.
Grace personified, moving from guest to guest, chit-chatting, smiling, acting the perfect hostess.
With spun platinum also up, but in a neater pile than the older woman, glittering strands swept high cheeks. Impeccable evening make-up accentuated every gorgeous feature on the face of a ... queen. Yes, a flicker of Yseline appeared.
Gold dangled from both ears. Around her neck, the elegant choker shimmered. At its front, the brilliant diamond seemed to send piercing sparkles my way.
A hem of curve-hugging royal blue velvet flowed just above the floor. As matching high-heels clicked, the gown’s lengthy slits offered breathtaking glimpses of toned pale legs. No back plus a deep V-neckline displayed even more sleek paleness.
Heart suddenly thumping louder, I tore my gaze from the vision. Not that the heat climbing both cheeks wasn’t already making my reaction obvious.
“Jim! Over here! There’s someone I’d like you to meet.”
The voice brought me to her husband. Despite knitted brows, Erville was smiling and waving at me. Around him stood a group of people. After slinging a grin onto my face, I headed toward them.
His grip was warm and strong as we shook hands. I handed him the bottle, and his eyes widened while scouring the label.
“Dios, amigo. You shouldn’t have.” He shook his head. “This is rare.”
“Feliz Navidad, Mr. Rivas.”
“Now, Jim. Not in my home. It’s Erville. And Merry Christmas to you. You’re alone this evening?”
I shrugged. “Nowadays I’m alone most evenings.”
Although accurate enough, his brow again furrowed. He kept his eyes on me while handing the bottle to a caterer. His gaze dropped to the flowers. The smile on his face blossomed, and he waved past me.
“Cariño! Jim made it!” he called toward blue-clad loveliness. “He’s brought you something.”
With tall sleekness moving closer, her elegant perfume shouldn’t have been discernible among the other scents, but it was. As I handed her the bouquet, she flashed the most radiant smile.
The universe once more faded away, leaving only her amid a pulsing haze.
“Oh, they’re lovely, Jim.” She leaned to place a peck on my cheek. “Thank you. Merry Christmas.”
Skin afire where waxiness had tapped, I only nodded as she disappeared behind me. Yep, just a pair of acquaintances; knew each other in passing.
Her husband? His eyes flickered for the tiniest second, but he introduced me to the cluster of guests. Surprise, business folk. All did a lot of traveling and harbored security concerns, similar to the ones for which Charles had asked my opinion.
Okay, so Erville wanted me to attend as much as his wife. Fine, after all, needed a good deal of distracting, right? Nobody inquired about the source of my knowledge, and they seemed grateful for the tips. With the aid of a tall flute of champagne from a passing tray, I sank into a swirling discussion, answering queries and being ... normal.
Sometime later, Erville disappeared, and the rest of us found our way to a cozy sitting room of overstuffed furnishings amid polished dark wood. Time flew, fueled by tasty hors d’oeuvres and a mix of sparkling or stronger booze-filled glasses from passing trays.
At last, the group dispersed after exchanging promises to continue our discussion, and I wandered further. An open doorway showed several couples on the rear deck, lit only by the pool’s azure glow and dim ground lights. Beneath the glass enclosure, keeping the warm night air even toastier, they were dancing. An array of tables and chairs surrounded the swaying crowd.
Lithe, blue warmth appeared at my side. Cinder’s eyes sparkled at me before dropping. The swift bow of her head. The soft smacking of crimson waxiness.
“Care to dance with the hostess, Jim?”
A swift scan showed several pairs of intrigued eyeballs. Yet, the pull on my core could not be avoided.
“Of course, Mrs. Rivas. I’d be honored.”
After giving her a quick bow, I held out an arm. Yep, cheesy, like a page from a romance novel, but she answered with a brief curtsy. The crowd didn’t burst into laughter. Instead, men got nudged in the ribs as grumbles left twinkly-eyed spouses.
Velvet-wrapped heat slid onto my arm, and everything faded but her as we stepped out under the starlight making the overhead panes twinkle. A quiet sigh escaped perfect lips, and those emeralds sparkled when she pressed into me. With my hands on her hips, we joined the other dancers.
Not that we were doing anything untoward, but I scanned the crowd, looking for Erville. Still inside, her husband was in an animated conversation with a group of guests.
“He sent me to you, master.”
The whisper’s soft warm puff drew my focus to those sparkling green pools. Part of me wanted to pursue her words, but she grinned and I smiled and sharp-boned cheeks bloomed a deep red.
Instead, I whispered, “You look gorgeous tonight, Mrs. Rivas.”
With a chuckle, she pushed into my pelvis, finding stiffness. “Hmm, can tell you’re not lying, naughty man.”
“Naughty?”
After a quick laugh, I returned the favor, pushing against taut velvet. Those eyes flashed as she pressed harder into me, adding a languid swirl. The sudden surge in my slacks made her whimper. Nope, not so much a holiday dance anymore.
Long lashes closed, a quiet sigh escaped her lips, and her head landed on my shoulder. The heartbeat in that daring neckline was hammering mine. As snug as two people could be, we slow-danced; not even sure if we were in sync with the song. A different rhythm ruled our souls.
Suddenly, the lights flicked off. Only the much dimmer glow from strands of red and green bulbs strung along the glass walls illuminated the patio. As murmuring and laughter filled the air, a delicate hand clasped my wrist. My pulse roared as her tug drew my fingers into the slit over a silken, warm thigh. When my fingertips found only smooth skin and dampness, a shaky moan heated my throat.
“Hmm, you’re the naughty one, Mrs. Rivas.”
“My master’s orders,” she whispered. “Whatever could I do?”
Though she’d spoken, her head remained in place, with long lashes still closed. She pulled again, drawing my hand around until a firm buttock filled my palm. A soft squeeze gained me a moan, and waxiness pressed into my neck as her entire body vibrated. The gentle prod of her tongue was followed by a shaky sigh.
“He’s taking me away in the morning,” she murmured.
“For how long?”
“Too long.”
I chuckled. “Gonna miss my cock, slave?”
Teeth pulled at my collar. A glance showed her lashes had opened; twin jewels flung sparkles into my soul.
“Mmm, gonna miss all of you, Jim,” she whispered.
A stronger tug of her bite sent my pulse even higher. Yeah, I’d caught the use of my name. Before either of us could explore further, the music ended. She offered no resistance as my hand left the dress.
“My thanks for the delightful dance, Mrs. Rivas,” I said in a louder voice.
“No, thank you, Jim.”
