“Been awfully quiet, master.”

At Mandy’s whisper, I spun slowly in the hot tub to glance at her. Gods, those gorgeous blue eyes, twinkling over the rim of a wineglass as she took a sip, made my heart thunder. With a grin, she pushed upward from the frothy suds, letting rivulets slither down those wondrous curves. Both nipples remained steel-hard, begging for the return of my mouth.

“Tease,” I mumbled.

“Um-hmm, a very naughty one, my love.” She licked her lips. “Need your slut to drain you again.”

I laughed and shook my head. “Wow, really have become an addict, huh?”

“Yes.” Her face grew serious, and a finger tapped the glossy black leather tight to a slender neck. “Your fault.”

“Come here.” I gestured her closer.

“Oh, gonna fuck me again? Missed me that much, hmm?”

Rather than reply, I widened my arms, and she glided into my embrace. The block lettering under her chin glittered, and the collar’s solid ring clinked as she slid across my lap with a quiet sigh. Her brows knitted when that compact butt wiggled, finding only curled softness.

“Later,” I said.

“What happened? I’m guessing you met. There weren’t any calls, so ... Did you at least get her name?”

“No. We, um, stuck with—”

“Fucktoy? You called her that the whole time?”

“Yeah.”

“Woah. And so, how did—”

“I made her cry.”

“Huh, but...”

The sigh to end all sighs left me as my hand roamed the sleek skin of her back. Images merged in my skull.

In a hotel room reeking of sex, the way those hazel eyes had flooded with tears. The glittering trails on cheeks still reddened from our final session. The hopeful young woman’s words, shaky and low at first, then louder, pleading as I’d departed. Cruel to be kind? Is that really a thing?

While taking another drink, Mandy snuggled closer and gazed into my soul. Yes, I was undergoing an assessment, one more than well-deserved. Under such an intense survey, words struggled to coalesce, but a few tumbled free.

“Did everything I had promised. Even signed an agreement.”

“Like a written document? With all the things she—”

“Uh-huh. And she did well, more than well.”

“So, why...” Her eyebrow arched. “Oh, she didn’t want you to, um, leave?”

“No, she didn’t.”

“Will you see her again?”

“No.”

“Master!”

“We need to talk, Mandy.”

Sparkle-lined lips snapped shut, and those eyes became azure lasers.

Nope, hadn’t meant my tone to be so sharp, but it was.

Her hand raised the glass, but it moved toward my mouth. I sipped, letting the exquisite vintage do its best to calm me. After swallowing and a lick of my lips, I nodded.

“Thanks. What I’m about to say may seem ... crazy. But, um, it’s time you knew. Things are happening—”

“You’re scaring me, baby,” she murmured, leaning to place the glass on the tub rim.

Part of me wanted to toss her aside, dash into the house and lock the doors. Curl up under my desk or huddle in the darkness. Give in; let somebody else take on this responsibility. This pure-hearted fool had done more than enough, and for how long?

A finger traced my shaking mouth, and the blur parted, letting me survey white-rimmed blueness, such a deep color, tugging on and warming my ancient soul. No, I owed her. That’d been my decision while slipping from the Fae realm.

Right as my lips parted, a gentle drizzle swept across the backyard like a swirling curtain. The quiet pitter-patter in the pool, still sloshing from her energetic “welcome home,” offered a calmness. Simple nature, doing simple nature things.

“There’s no way to start this but at the beginning,” I said in the voice of somebody pulling frayed memories from towering shelves. “It was a hot, dry, dusty day. We’d just survived a battle. Every muscle ached as I marched up a hillside trail...”

To her, each minute detail was confessed: my life, the failures, the hard lessons, the losses, the endless fucking losses, the few triumphs. The choices made. Decisions that now ruled my world. What I’d pieced together. The riches gathered, both in gold and friends, true allies. Homes and yachts of every size, the fastest jets, the finest cars, a string of exclusive resorts and upscale hotels. How everything meshed to offer some sense of stability and balance to a life that shouldn’t exist.

Also, no shying away from how a not-so-pure-hearted fool had treated people. Mandy’s hand clutched the collar as dark words, horrible words, words filled with anguish and embarrassment and hatred for myself poured from shaking lips. Master to so many slaves, of so many varieties, in so many places, for so long. No apology could ever cover the amount of suffering inflicted at my hands. That weight would be borne for all time, as it should.

Next came details of the primal werefolk, the soulless bloodsuckers, the trick-filled, chaos-hugging Fae. The fractious alliances formed. The horrible wars fought. Hopeful peace deals shattered and strewn across the centuries. An endless swirl of conflict that I still fought to the present day. The plane we’d taken to the resort. The remote airfield. Those who knew there’d never be a retirement of any kind for me.

All of it left my lips, draining a skull filled to the brim with things no mortal mind should ever hold. Added that Cinder had already heard the same story, as had a problematic yet hope-clutching, loyal Fae named Mi.

About my recent trip to the Fae realm, I avoided mention of the queen’s offer. In my core, a fear became the largest ball of sharp-edged ice; perhaps there’d be no necessity for such an offering. Mandy would flee screaming from a madman.

The silence that followed was profound, endless, and kept my pulse racing.

No words left her as sleekness slipped from my lap, then drifted from my shaking arms. Breath formed puffs while the silent woman struggled to control her panting. As she swept backward through the suds, her eyes flickered, glancing at the leafless trees with limbs glistening in the sunshine that had driven off the wintry rain.

Once at the far side, she sank to her chin. Wisps of steam rose from the jets to mask and blur her visage.

Time truly stopped. Far above this world, the cackling ended as toga-wrapped deities leaned from their golden thrones.

“Fucktoy said ‘hi,’” I tossed into the silence. “She, um, missed you.”
