More unrealness swirled. With Yseline, Queen of the Fae, clasping my arm, we wandered across an enormous field of vibrant flowers. Every hue wavered under the caress of a gentle, warm breeze. Their fragrance mixed with a delicate, ethereal scent coming from the ultra-femininity clad only in softly swishing, teasing nothingness.

The heat of the sun pierced my still-unclothed frame as long, brilliant white fingernails roamed my chest. Their slow dragging was the sharpest sensation in a mind continuing its struggle to shake free of the murk. The echoes of spider-harvested memories continued to fade.

“How I’ve missed you, dear Iakovos.”

My brow furrowed. “Hmm.”

“You are angered?” Silk-clad warmth pressed tighter. “We have things of import to discuss.”

“Mi?”

“She is released. As soon as you appeared, I ordered it so.”

“Why bother? You could’ve just—”

“—sent you a message? My dearest...” A nail traced a lengthy scar. “They grow shallower, yet you bear more of them each time. On any other, they’d be so ugly, but such injuries only add to your...” A quiet sigh escaped her, and the hand fell away. “Is it wrong of me to desire your presence?”

“Yes.”

A tinkling, perfect laugh shattered the quiet, and I glanced over to find swirling colors beneath perfect brows arching high. The delicate hand returned to me, but lower, clasping my dangling rod. Her touch was tender, yet...

“You said we had things to discuss,” I grumbled.

“Would you begrudge me your company?”

“Yes, Yseline, I would.”

“Hah, see, that right there!” She laughed again. “Only you dare call me by my first name alone. What am I to do? Such insult. You should ravish me.”

Though I tried to swallow a laugh, it escaped. Call me weak to the effects of playful women ... or rather, beings. She was no woman, yet her glamour remained perfection. Never known the most beautiful of all Fae to host another.

Our stroll took us toward a towering pavilion of gleaming whiteness. Slender pillars hosted winding greenery speckled with vivid blooms. Colorful flowers also crept along the trellises that formed the walls, and in their shadows stretched a massive round bed.

“Seriously?” I murmured.

Her grip gave my length a gentle squeeze as she glanced across the field. “Perhaps you’d prefer—”

“No. Mi is free?”

“Yes, handsome Lord Iakovos. You have my word. The wayward one has been returned to her human ... lover. Although why she chose—”

“Freedom.”

“Humph, she was quite clear: her loyalty is now to you. You offered to aid her.”

My only response was a slow nod, and we walked in silence, getting closer to the flower-shrouded enclosure. The sun’s heat had driven away the last of the iciness, and my mind grew sharp once again. A curt sigh drew me to her upturned face.

“You are a good man, Iakovos.”

A wry chuckle escaped me. “Hmm, getting that a lot these days.”

“As you should. I have seen ... much.”

“Didn’t enjoy that.”

“Apologies, my lord.”

“Stop it. You’re a queen.”

“Mmm, not in your presence.”

A quick hop brought her to her toes, and sharp, brilliant teeth nipped at my chin. Those eyes sparkled, and my heart ached; so like Mandy.

“Oh, we must talk of her as well, Lord Iakovos.”

My fists tightened, as did my chest. “Don’t you dare—”

She placed a slender finger across my lips. “Worry not. Such is not my intent.”

We entered the shade of an archway between bloom-laden trellises. A chill swept through me, only to be replaced by a surge of heat when the unreal beauty left my arm to surge forward. All those lean curves gliding across the mattress. That smile up at me as a delicate hand swiped away errant spun gold.

Her gaze dropped to my obvious reaction. Unnatural eyes tossed sparkles.

“You should punish me first, Lord Very Well-Endowed Iakovos.” Amid a whirling cloud of diaphanous material and swirling tresses, she spun onto all fours. “For bringing you here against your will. For tricking you in such an unlady-like way. For harboring the naughtiest of thoughts.”

“Naughty?”

“Um-hmm. Oh, yes, your delightful Amanda. We shall get to her. Quite the lovely creature. You are so very lucky to have found her. Ever wonder how that happened?”

“What do you mean?”

“Ah, fine.” A heavy exhale, and she rolled to her side. A hand patted the mattress before me. “Please, Iakovos. I will explain.”

Brow knitted, I dropped onto the bed to lie on my spine. The coolness sent shivers through my core and came close to making me smile.

“Thank you.” She swept closer, pressing silk-clad warmth into my side. “This I missed most of all. Just us together. As it should’ve always been.”

“You are Fae.”

“You are handsome.”

Her laugh was quiet, and those multi-hued eyes gained an intensity. What could I do but chuckle; the gorgeous creature, as is common to all her kind, also embodied persistence.

“Explain,” I grumbled.

“We’ve had our differences—”

“Yeah, we have.”

A fingernail tapped my chin. “You’re ... You are like a beacon, Lord Iakovos the Beautiful. For many years, the flame has sputtered. Nay, decades. Yet, now it blossoms, warming far and wide. Even here, I felt its glow.”

Her hand lowered to roam my chest. The slow swirl of sharp nails left heat in their wake.

“The timing was right,” she continued. “Darkness has also erupted, offering gloom and chilliness to many. A threat not seen in centuries is among us. In your world. You know this?”

“Mm-hmm.”

“Thus, you.”

“Me?”

“The light that blazes, brightens, just as shadows threaten. This is no coincidence. Those you still choose to follow, or others, are at work.”

“They’ve never—”

“Iakovos. Humor me. This world, all our worlds, are susceptible to change. Sometimes those changes can lead to ... shadow. You’re a counterbalance, a guiding force. Have you not felt it thus?”

“No.”

Eyes suddenly narrowing, she saw right through the lie. The fingernails dug a little deeper. A hiss escaped me as I nodded.

“Indeed, Lord Iakovos the Undying. Many are drawn to you. Followers, partners, allies, even sometime foes.”

“There is a woman. A female vampire, who—”

Yseline shook her head, making the spun gold shimmer. “No, that one is far more. Once the creature was such, when haunting European cities, but now ... More of a witch, a sorceress. Darker, colder powers rally to her cause. The name is Cherise, and she resides ... closer.” A glow formed in my skull, outlining a location. “If unchecked, she will unsettle many and ruin much.”

“Why do you care?” I nodded toward the false heaven. “You’re safe in here.”
