Commissario Emma Rizzi July 22nd Saturday night
The past week has brought vital breakthroughs regarding Alessandro’s car accident. However, we were still stuck in a holding pattern, waiting for the forensic analysis of the encrypted hard drive retrieved during the search of the victim’s house.
In the meantime, I had to face the reality that I was actively undermining my relationship with an amazing man: Marco, the chief of the forensics team.
After we shared an incredible date night at his place and I declined his offer of an exclusive relationship, he completely shut down my attempt to get a new date at his flat. He had claimed he was hosting a guest from Rimini, the town where he had lived before being stationed in Perugia.
I spent my Friday night and Saturday morning tossing and turning, wondering what to do until, once again, Lisa, my deputy and best friend, helped me clear my head.
Early Saturday afternoon, I finally called her. “Hello, Lisa. I’m having a really hard time here. I didn’t sleep a wink last night.”
“What’s wrong, Emma?”
“A couple of days ago, I tried to get Marco to agree to another date night, but he shut me down. He told me he has a guest visiting from Rimini, but to me, it felt like an excuse. Maybe he has a date with someone else. Have you heard any gossip about him and any of the girls around the station?”
“I told you so, Emma,” Lisa sighed. “If you keep pushing him away, you’re going to lose him. Luckily for you, I haven’t heard a single rumour about him dating anyone else; it seems your white knight isn’t interested in dating inside the office, well, except for you, obviously. But I have no idea what he’s up to outside of work. What are you going to do about it?”
“I don’t know, Lisa. I just feel like I’m losing something incredibly valuable to me, someone I truly care about. How can I even find out if there’s still a chance for us after I was so incredibly stupid?”
“Just go tell him how you feel!” Lisa said plainly.
And that was exactly what I needed to hear.
“Thank you, Lisa! You are my saviour,” I replied.
I finally knew what I had to do.
I’m not one for subtle strategies. When something is on my mind, I go straight for my goal. I dressed in a casual outfit, nothing too sexy, put on some nice makeup, tied my hair back in a ponytail, and went out to buy a lot of ice cream and a good bottle of wine. Around 7:00 PM, with my heart hammering against my ribs, I knocked on Marco’s door.
Marco’s little daughter, Jasmine, opened the door and instantly threw herself at me, hugging my legs. “Emma, I’m so happy you’re here! Dad didn’t tell me you were coming. Come in!”
I stepped inside, only to find a surprised but smiling Marco staring back at me. “What are you doing here, Emma?” he asked.
He was sitting at the dining table with a stunning woman across from him.
Even while seated, it was obvious she was tall, likely in her mid-thirties, with a model-like figure. She was dressed in skinny shorts showing endless legs, and a tight crop top that shaped two perfect breasts. She had black hair, tied in a ponytail, blue eyes like Marco’s, and was barefoot.
I wanted the floor to open up and swallow me whole right then and there. My facial expression must have made it painfully clear how embarrassed I was. I’m sure it betrayed a flash of anger and jealousy, too, even though I had absolutely no right to question Marco’s exclusiveness, did I?
“Sorry, Marco. It was a misunderstanding. I didn’t mean to interrupt your dinner. I’ll leave right now,” was all I could say, frantically trying to back my way out the door.
It was Jasmine who completely changed the game, shouting enthusiastically, “Wait, Emma! You have to meet my aunt Paola! She’s visiting us from Rimini this weekend. Don’t go, stay with us! But you can’t sleep over tonight, because Aunt Paola is taking my bed, and I’m sleeping in Dad’s bed.”
Oh, the innocent honesty of children! I was blushing furiously now, and I could see Marco starting to turn a bit pink, too.
But he was smiling, and his sister, Paola, was now laughing out loud. “So, you’re Emma,” she said warmly. “I’m Paola, Marco’s younger sister. I was wondering when I’d finally get the chance to meet you, since these two here haven’t stopped talking about you all weekend. Please, stay. We’ll make room at the table.”
And that was how I ended up spending another incredible family night with Marco. Paola was wonderfully friendly and funny; we clicked instantly, and after a couple of glasses of wine, we were chatting and joking around like old girlfriends.
Eventually, it was time for Jasmine to call it a night. She asked her aunt to read her a bedtime story. But right after she changed into her pyjamas, she climbed onto my lap, wrapped her arms around my neck, and kissed my cheek. “I like you, Emma. Can you come here every night?”
Where was that sudden moisture in my eyes coming from? Why was there a heavy lump forming in my throat? I kissed her forehead, whispered goodnight, and let her head off to bed.
Jasmine followed Paola to the bedroom, and I was finally left alone in the living room with Marco. Looking him directly in the eye, I simply said, “Yes.”
“Yes, what, Emma?” he asked, his tone curious and searching.
“Yes to being exclusive. Yes to being a couple. Yes to starting this crazy thing together,” I replied, stepping forward to wrap my arms around him.
“I’m so glad you made up your mind, Emma. I couldn’t ask for anything more,” Marco whispered. He smiled, pulling me tightly against him as his lips met mine in a deep, passionate kiss.
Paola walked back into the living room a few minutes later, after Jasmine had fallen asleep safely. She took one look at the two of us, a knowing smile on her face.
“I’m so happy for you guys,” she said softly. “You truly belong together.”
Investigation – Week Four
Once again on Sunday, I spent a long time on the phone explaining everything to Lisa. I told her all about meeting Paola and how I had finally agreed to start an exclusive relationship with Marco.
Lisa was absolutely thrilled for me. “I’m so happy for you, Emma! You deserve this. I’ll make sure to let the other girls around the station know the score. I’ll keep an eye on them so they know to keep their hands off Marco and calm down their burning hormones.”
Have I mentioned lately how much I love Lisa?
By the beginning of the following week, the first background checks on Andrea Foggiani started coming in.
Forty-five years old, with a degree in Economics. He owned a medium-sized heavy-machinery maintenance firm with 75 employees, where Elena served as the head of HR. He was a widower with no children. His wife had died at thirty-eight, three years prior, under unresolved circumstances. It was a hit-and-run accident while she was out jogging on a quiet country road during her usual morning run. Despite a deep police investigation and heavy media pressure surrounding the death of such a prominent, esteemed entrepreneur, the culprit was never found.
Andrea’s ownership of the company had come entirely from his wife’s side of the family. The business had been founded by her father, and she had learned everything from him, taking over the leadership upon his retirement. Andrea inherited the firm and was appointed CEO only after her death. Before that, he had been only a board member with zero operational responsibilities; his primary role had been simply to attend public and charity events alongside his wife and sign some papers.
Digging into the company’s financial records, it quickly became clear that the transition of leadership from the wife to the husband had been a disaster for the business. Over the last three years, they had lost several of their best managers and experienced high employee turnover.
The most recent annual balance sheets showed a slide. The company was actively bleeding money.
Andrea’s wife’s unsolved death raised a red flag. I asked Lisa to retrieve and dig into the investigation file about the wife’s death.
The day after, Lisa swarmed into my office with a paper in his hand: “I have something here, chief! During the investigation into Andrea’s wife’s accident, some eyewitnesses spotted a car running on the same road at the same early morning hours, and guess what? It was a black BMW SUV! No other evidence was found about this car; literally, it disappeared after the accident, so the investigators couldn’t go further on this lead.”
“Holy shit, deputy, are you suggesting that Andrea’s wife’s death was a murder, too? And that this car is a common element in both scenes?”
“It looks like that, chief”
