A loud, persistent roaring sound mixed with heavy drumming woke Carl on Wednesday morning. He quickly realized they were in a downpour, and the sound was caused by rain drops colliding with the roof. Yawning softly, he slowly sat up and raised his arms above his head as he stretched.

Carl couldn’t help but smile as memories of the previous night returned to him. Amelia had kissed him. Her soft lips pressing against his was something he’d remember for the rest of his life. They had kissed goodnight one more time before heading to bed, promising to see each other in the morning.

He didn’t remember falling asleep, he just remembered feeling happier than he had ever been as he changed and got into bed. Amelia had even texted him goodnight from her room before she went to sleep. It was hard to believe, but Amelia seemed as happy as he was about their kiss.

They hadn’t talked about where they stood, which made Carl nervous. Was the kiss a one time thing? Would someone as amazing as Amelia actually want to pursue a real relationship with him? Carl didn’t know. He felt like he had gotten to know her pretty well, and she wouldn’t lead him on. It was tough to remind himself Amelia was different, not like the people who called him a loser.

A buzzing sound from the bedside table saved Carl from his ruminations. It was quite early for a text, so he hoped it was from her. Grabbing his glasses, Carl checked his phone. His face broke out into a wide grin when he read the text message.

Amelia: Good morning, handsome.:*

Carl: Good morning.

Carl: Nice timing, I just woke up.

Carl: Oh! And you’re beautiful.

Amelia: Well, that was adorable.:)

Carl: That wasn’t too awkward, was it?

Amelia: Nah, not awkward.

Holding his phone, Carl struggled to think of what to say next when there was a soft knock on the door.

“C-come in!” he called out nervously.

Amelia opened the door, causing Carl to squeak and pull the covers up to his neck. “Sorry, you told me to come in!” The blonde giggled. “Didn’t want me to catch you shirtless?”

“S-sorry, I’m just ah, a little self-conscious,” Carl mumbled.

Smirking, Amelia slowly turned around and faced the doorway. “I did see you in a swimsuit, buddy.”

“You don’t have to, um, never mind, I’ll put a shirt on,” Carl coughed, noticing Amelia was dressed in a matching cotton pajama set, her blonde hair in a simple ponytail.

“Shame, I liked what I saw,” Amelia giggled, crossing her arms.

“Y-you did?” Carl mumbled as he got up and put on a shirt.

“Some women don’t like body hair,” she answered. “I think it’s manly.”

“I’m pretty skinny,” he cleared his throat. “Okay, I’m dressed.”

Amelia shut the door and turned around, her pretty face lit up in a radiant smile. “I’m not big on the muscle-bound look. I don’t want a guy on steroids.”

“You’re, you look, um, you too,” Carl blushed. “I mean, I like the way you look too.”

The beautiful blonde walked barefoot across the room and placed a hand on Carl’s cheek. “We need to work on your confidence.” Amelia leaned in and pecked his lips. “I like you. No need to be nervous.”

“I like you, too,” he replied.

“Good,” she crinkled her nose cutely. “I thought we should talk about last night before heading down to breakfast. I think the others are already downstairs.”

“O-okay,” Carl let out a breath.

“I’m used to guys starting this conversation, but sometimes a girl has to go after what she wants,” Amelia explained. “You might have noticed I’m kind of reserved, myself. I get scared of being hurt, but I think this is something worth taking the risk on.”

“Are you saying you want to, you know, date?” he hardly dared to believe it.

“I am,” she nodded firmly. “We’re both going to BU in the fall, so we’ll be able to spend time together. If that’s okay with you? I mean, I don’t know what will happen, but I know I don’t want last night to be the end of it.”

“I’d like that,” Carl whispered, his heart racing. He was sure he had never smiled so much in his life.

Amelia kissed him again. “Wanna head down to breakfast, boyfriend?”

“Yes!” he exclaimed, making her laugh lightly.

Carl and Amelia went downstairs together, both of them smiling without realizing. Owen, Marcus, and Mei were eating breakfast at the kitchen table when the couple entered. Marcus stopped chewing, looking over at Owen. Then back to Carl. Then to Amelia.

“Well, well, well,” Marcus smirked. “What do we have here?”

Carl turned red. “W-what?”

“Despite the current downpour, you two have quite the sunny disposition,” Mei observed.

“Oh, shush,” Amelia blushed as well.

The front door flew open before anyone could respond, causing all five of them to jump and look over. Sofia was completely soaked as she stepped inside, her wet hair clinging to her face as she dripped water all over the floor. She shivered slightly while she closed the door, her sundress clinging to her curves. Sofia held her shoes and purse in one hand as she looked at everyone.

“Uh, good morning,” Sofia offered a tight smile.

“Now that’s how to do the walk of shame,” Mei observed.

Owen also smirked. “So, how was your evening?”

“Coffee. Need coffee,” Sofia grunted, walking straight to the coffee pot.

“You also might need to change,” Amelia suggested while Carl blushed and looked away.

“Yeah, we can kind of see, you know, everything,” Marcus cleared his throat.

“Huh?” Sofia frowned and looked down at her white sundress, realizing it truly left nothing to the imagination.

“Bra and panties in your purse?” Mei gestured toward Sofia’s purse.

“Uh, yeah,” Sofia blushed slightly. “Um, excuse me.”

They fell into an uncomfortable silence after Sofia left the kitchen. Naturally, Mei decided to try and lighten the mood.

“Hey, how are one night stands like savings accounts?” Mei asked.

Owen let out a long sigh. “We don’t know, Mei.”

“You make a deposit, a withdrawal, then lose interest,” Mei declared proudly.

Marcus pinched the bridge of his nose. “Great.”

“Wait, that’s not true,” Owen argued. “You gain interest with a savings account, not lose it.”

Mei froze, her eyes widening. “Shit. Okay, forget that one. I can do better. Hang on.”

“The suspense is killing us,” Owen said after a few minutes.

“Hang on, I’m working on it!” Mei grumbled.

“Working on what?” Sofia asked as she returned to the kitchen in pajamas and made her way to the coffee pot.

“Her first joke didn’t make sense,” Marcus explained.

“Can we not make jokes about my sex life, please?” Sofia requested as she poured her coffee.

“It’s no big deal, stop ovary acting,” Mei grinned as Owen groaned.

“What’s worse, a pun or a dad joke?” Amelia asked with a giggle.

“Oh, I’ve got one!” Mei clapped. “What’s the difference between a one night stand and a washing machine?”

“I don’t know,” Carl said quietly.

“The washing machine won’t call you every day for a week after you put a load in it.”

“And that’s enough of that,” Sofia stated as she sat at the table and sipped her coffee.

“She’s right,” Amelia spoke up. “No need to embarrass her.”

“What’s to be embarrassed about?” Mei frowned. “Was he a bad lay? How could you tell after thirty seconds?”

“He was very good,” Sofia smiled slightly. “I really needed that.”

“I get it, girl,” Mei nodded. “Sometimes you just need to relax and take a trip to pound town. Right, Amelia?”

“Oh, um, well...” Amelia blushed crimson.

“Oh, that’s right!” Owen grinned. “We were just about to ask Carl and Amelia why they looked so happy this morning.”

Sofia gasped, looking back and forth between Amelia and Carl. “Spill it! What happened?”

“Carl and I decided to start seeing each other,” Amelia smiled softly.

“Yay!” Sofia clapped excitedly. “I’m so happy for you both.”

“T-thank you,” Carl responded nervously.

“Yes, we’re very happy everyone had a great night,” Marcus cleared his throat. “But we have something to decide. What are we doing today? It’s raining pretty hard out there.”

“I read the storm is going to last all day,” Mei sighed.

“All we can really do is stay inside,” Amelia grimaced.

“Well, we can still have fun,” Owen reasoned with a shrug. “Games? Drinking? Drinking games?”

“It’s nine in the morning!” Mei exclaimed.

“It’s five o’clock somewhere,” Owen grinned.

“We’re not gonna be drunk all day,” Marcus chuckled. “How about we meet in the living room? I’ll light a fire and we can play some games? Sober games.”

“That sounds like fun,” Amelia readily agreed.

The rain never let up. Sheets of water poured from the sky, relentlessly crashing into Labrador Pond and ruining any chance at outdoor activities. Every so often, gusts of wind would rattle the windows. Inside the house however, the crackling fireplace and smell of fresh coffee made everyone feel comfortable and warm.

It wasn’t long before board games covered the living room as the six friends played. Marcus protested having to move three spaces, even though the card he picked forced him to. Amelia then laughed and told the big guy he should lose with some dignity.

They took a break after a couple of games to refill their drinks and chat. No one had taken out the alcohol just yet, but it was only a matter of time. Carl eventually found himself alone in the kitchen with Sofia as the two of them grabbed a couple of sodas. Carl took an extra for Amelia.

“H-how are you doing?” Carl asked quietly.

“Me? What about you, you dog!” Sofia waggled her eyebrows. “Did you two kiss?”

“W-we did,” he admitted with a small smile.

“Good for you,” she playfully punched his shoulder. “And yes, I’m just fine. You ... you’re not upset, right? I mean, I know you and Amelia are are thing.”

“No, I’m not upset,” Carl shook his head. “I just wanted to make sure you’re okay.”

“I’m fine,” Sofia nodded slowly. “I tend to bottle up any stress. So, last night was a nice opportunity to just relax and enjoy myself.”

“Are you going to start dating Dylan?”

“No,” she shook her head. “He’s a nice guy and we both enjoyed herself, but it was a one time thing. Two people coming together and living in the moment. No regrets.”

“As long as you’re happy,” Carl responded.

“You really are a sweetie,” Sofia smiled. “I’m guessing you and Amelia haven’t talked about sex yet. Just remember, every relationship is different. Every person is different. Amelia wouldn’t have done what I did last night.”

“I’m not judging you.”

Sofia reached out and cupped his face. “I know. I’m just saying that you two have a lot to learn about each other. Communicate and you’ll be fine.”

The next game got surprisingly competitive. It was a card game where the goal was to get rid of all your cards. Owen and Mei were sitting next to each other, both determined to piss the other one off. Mei grinned when she made Owen pick up four cards, then Owen managed to reverse the order of play and do the same to Mei. Amelia ended up winning.

By early afternoon, no one was disappointed about being trapped inside anymore. Games spread across the entire living room; playing cards covered the coffee table, a half-finished puzzle occupied one corner, and dice rolled across the floor with each passing turn. The fire crackled warmly as everyone laughed and talked. While outside, Labrador Pond remained cold, gray, and soaked.

Lunch was simple; just sandwiches and some chips. Amelia sat with Carl and playfully stole a few folded chips from his plate. She told him the folded potato chips tasted best. The new couple endured some teasing for being so cute, but they both thought it was worth it.

They took out the alcohol and brought it into the living room after lunch. Carl tried his first tequila shot, nearly choking on the strong liquid as it burned its way down his throat. Marcus and Sofia congratulated him while Amelia stole a quick kiss. Then beers and hard lemonades were passed out.

A few more games were played before Sofia suggested charades. That led to quite a bit more drinking and a lot more laughs. Amelia pretended to read a book, then Mei hopped around like a kangaroo. Marcus played air guitar before Carl acted out the scene in a movie to cheers.

“What are you?” Marcus frowned.

Owen responded by flapping his arms wildly.

“An idiot?” Mei suggested.

Rolling his eyes, Owen spun around while still flapping his arms.

“No,” Marcus shook his head.

Owen crouched.

“Still no,” Amelia said.

Sighing loudly, Owen pointed toward the sky and flapped his arms.

“A confused eagle?” Mei suggested.

“No!” Owen growled.

“Hey, no talking!” Amelia admonished.

“A weird airplane?” Carl offered.

Owen groaned. “I’M A WINDMILL!”

Everyone stared.

“Windmills don’t fly,” Mei snorted.

Charades ended up being a great way to burn off energy while being stuck in the house. After the game, everyone was relaxed; curled up with snacks, hot chocolate, or coffee. The rain continued outside while a comforting fire burned in the old fireplace.

“How about a drinking game?” Sofia suggested.

“Truth or dare?” Owen offered.

“So you can get us girls naked? No thanks,” Mei scoffed. “Keep it in your pants, perv.”

“Strip poker is out then?” Marcus grinned.

“Definitely,” Sofia replied. “You already got a good look this morning. You’re fine.”

“Never have I ever?” Mei asked.

“What’s that?” Carl frowned.

“Someone says something they’ve never done before,” Amelia explained quietly. “If you have done that, you drink.”

“It’s a pretty simple way to get to know each other,” Sofia shrugged.

“Oh, I know a better one,” Marcus said. “How about two truths and a lie?”

“I don’t know that one either,” Carl sighed.

“I like that idea better,” Amelia smiled. “Carl, each person says three facts about themselves. Two are true, one is a lie. The other players have to guess which one the lie is. If they’re wrong, they drink.”

“Okay, we need to finalize the rules,” Mei grinned. “When it’s your turn, you list your three facts. The other players discuss it, but we each have to separately declare which one is the lie. The losers drink.”

“That works for me,” Owen nodded.

“Great! You can go first,” Mei smiled. “But we already know about your masturbation addiction.”

“Hilarious,” Owen rolled his eyes.

“It’s nothing to be ashamed of,” Mei giggled. “I hope you beat your addiction.”

Sofia laughed loudly. “I liked that one.”

“I’m starting,” Owen took a drink before speaking. “First, I’ve been to every New England state except Rhode Island.”

“Oddly specific,” Marcus commented.

“Second,” Owen ignored him, “I’ve never broken a bone. Third, I’ve met a professional photographer whose work has appeared in some of the most famous magazines in the world.”

“I think the photographer one is the lie,” Carl said slowly.

Mei frowned. “No, I think the Rhode Island one.”

“I agree with Mei,” Sofia nodded.

Marcus leaned forward. “You’re very spontaneous, I think you’ve broken a bone before.”

“Okay, the lie is that I’ve never been to Rhode Island,” Owen declared.
