Noise from downstairs woke Carl on Tuesday morning. Checking his phone, he realized he overslept. After quickly dressing in shorts and a t-shirt, Carl made his way downstairs to find everyone in the kitchen. The girls were sitting at the table eating breakfast while Owen and Marcus were taking bottles out of brown paper bags.

“Look who’s decided to join us,” Sofia smiled.

“Good morning, Carl,” Amelia said, giving him a cute wave.

“Good morning,” Carl blushed lightly.

“We just got back from the beer run,” Marcus explained. “God bless rideshares.”

“You got a lot more than just beer,” Mei observed.

“Yes,” Owen grinned. “Yes, we did.”

The guys decided on the same simple breakfast as the ladies; bagels with butter or cream cheese. It was only the third day, but everyone was already acting like they’d known each other for years. There was friendly teasing, there were inside jokes and the usual groans after one of Mei’s bad puns.

A few people suggested ideas for what to do with the day, with kayaking being one of the big ideas. Owen and Marcus also wanted to try fishing, while the girls brought up the idea of relaxing. Eventually, even Mei came around to not having anything scheduled and seeing where the day went.

After breakfast there was a flurry of activity as everyone scattered. Carl headed up to his room to grab a book before making his way to the backyard. Marcus and Owen were pulling fishing rods out of the storage shed while discussing casting techniques.

Carl found a chair by the firepit and started reading the latest science fiction novel by L. Walsh. The other two guys started fishing as Mei came outside in a bikini with her hair in a braid. She found a flat rock to relax on, placing her earbuds in while getting some sun.

Owen soon caught a large-mouth bass and brought it over to Mei to introduce them. She didn’t squeal, but instead said Owen was a large-mouth ass holding a large-mouth bass. Carl couldn’t help laughing under his breath as Mei demanded Owen let the poor thing go. Owen threw the fish back into Labrador Pond just before Marcus caught one of his own. Then Owen claimed Marcus caught the same exact fish.

It wasn’t long before another person joined them. Carl’s breath caught when Amelia came out back in a dark red sports bra and a pair of black leggings. The beautiful blonde had decided to relax with some yoga. Her hair was in a ponytail and she placed her mat on the grass before going through a few poses.

It was not okay to stare, but Carl couldn’t help but sneak glances every few minutes. Eventually he realized he had read the same paragraph five times, yet still had no idea what it said. Amelia was his friend, but he couldn’t deny how gorgeous she was. Really, just having a female friend was new to him.

“Is that a telescope in your pocket, or are you happy to see me?” a female voice whispered in Carl’s ear.

He jumped, dropping his book in the grass. “W-what?” Carl immediately adjusted himself to hide his excitement as he turned his head to see Sofia had crept up behind him. “I, um, hi, ah, Sofia...”

“Mm, that’s it, say my name,” Sofia giggled, placing her hands on his shoulders.

“Uh...” Carl stammered, his face bright red.

“You’re improving,” she said as she sat down beside him. “A couple days ago you would have passed out if I caught you with a woody.”

“Y-you’re just teasing me, aren’t you?” he was extremely grateful the others were too far away to hear the quiet conversation.

“Of course!” Sofia exclaimed, crossing her legs. “You and me are buddies. It’s what we do.”

“Okay, good,” Carl let out a breath.

“I’m trying to help you stop overthinking things,” she explained. “Friends embarrass each other, friends tease. You don’t have to worry we’re gonna suddenly decide we hate you. Just be you. That’s all we want.”

“Thanks, Sofia,” he managed a smile, despite still being mortified.

“You’re welcome,” Sofia nodded, giving him a sideways glance. “Tough to tell, but it looked like you don’t need to be ashamed of Carl Junior.”

Carl’s eyes widened as he stared at her in horror.

“Oh, stop,” she laughed lightly. “Friends tease, remember?”

“I’m not used to girls talking to me at all,” Carl admitted with a wince.

“Right, sorry,” Sofia looked at him guiltily. “I really am just being your friend. I hope I didn’t take it too far?”

“Y-you didn’t,” he assured her.

“I get it,” she said, waggling her eyebrows. “You can’t tell if I’m wet or not. That’s not fair.”

“T-teasing?”

Sofia just shrugged, her green eyes sparkling mischievously.

The raven-haired beauty was wearing jean shorts and a black bikini top. Carl noticed Sofia was leaning forward in her seat, making him think she was teasing him to see if he’d look. He was in shock that a girl was even playing a game like that with him. Carl was determined to win and kept looking her in the eye.

“You’re resisting my titties, impressive,” she laughed again. “Oh, this is fun. Although, I think you might not be interested because I’m not a cute blonde with a freckled nose.”

“Uh...”

“Do you wanna talk about something else?” Sofia offered. “I’m being kind of mean.”

“L-like what?” Carl asked, grabbing his book off the ground.

“What do you like to read?” she gestured at his book.

“Science fiction, mostly,” he answered. “D-do you read?”

“Nope, never learned,” Sofia smirked.

“Now I know you’re teasing,” Carl smiled slightly, feeling less embarrassed.

She stuck out her tongue. “I like some romance novels. Mysteries. A few thrillers.”

Carl and Sofia fell silent as they relaxed and enjoyed the morning. Amelia continued stretching while Mei sunbathed and watched the two boys fish. Owen and Marcus each caught a fish at the same time, both of them arguing theirs was bigger. Mei sat up and declared neither guy had anything worth seeing. Amelia and Sofia both burst into a fit of giggles.

“Hey, Carl?” Sofia asked in a sing-song voice as she looked up from her phone.

“Yes?” he glanced over at her.

“Can I ask you a personal question?” she looked nervous, which surprised him.

“A-about, ah, you know...?”

“No, not about Mister Happy,” Sofia laughed before turning serious again. “No, um, you’re so nervous around women, did you really never date?”

“Never been on a date, never kissed a girl,” Carl confirmed with a sigh. “You were the first to hug me who wasn’t family.”

“And you like Amelia,” she said. It wasn’t a question.

“Um, well...” Carl trailed off.

“Can I tell you a secret?” Sofia wondered.

“Of course,” he nodded, happy she wasn’t pressing him.

“From what I’ve noticed, Amelia would have ruined her panties if she saw what I did,” she grinned.

Carl’s eyes widened as he once again forgot how to speak. Instead he adjusted his glasses, noticing how sweaty he was getting.

“A woman knows,” Sofia nodded sagely. “You’ve definitely got a shot there. That’s why I’m pushing. I want to help.”

“H-help?” he rasped, his mouth suddenly dry. He was just hoping they’d stay friends after the week!

“I haven’t known Amelia long, but she seems the shy type romantically,” Sofia continued with a frown. “With her looks, she’s never needed to go after a guy; they’ve all come to her.”

“I’m sure,” Carl sighed, glancing around to make sure no one was paying attention to their conversation.

“We haven’t had much chance to girl-talk,” Sofia mused. “Okay, here’s what I’m gonna do. I’ll be your wingwoman.”

“I haven’t, I mean, ah, I didn’t...”

“Didn’t admit you like her?” she raised an eyebrow. “You didn’t have to. I’m not an idiot.”

“I...”

“I won’t say anything about this, I promise,” she smiled kindly. “Do you trust me?”

“Yes,” Carl said with no hesitation.

“Suggest to the guys that you three try out the kayaks,” Sofia advised. “Paddle over to Pine Island. We ladies can have some female bonding time. Get to know each other better.”

“O-okay,” he nodded, unable to comprehend what was happening.

“And next time? You’ll be comfortable enough with me to make a joke about pillow fights in our underwear or something,” she smirked.

“That’s only for slumber parties, not the middle of the day,” Carl pointed out.

“Now we’re getting somewhere,” Sofia grinned.

It wasn’t difficult for Carl to convince the other guys to try out the kayaks. Setting the fishing equipment aside, they got three kayaks ready for launch. Carl had never been in a kayak before, but Marcus was both a great leader and a great teacher. A short explanation and demonstration felt like enough, though Carl was a little nervous.

“Have fun!” Amelia waved from the shore.

“Enjoy your boy time,” Sofia added with a giggle.

Mei cupped her hands around her mouth. “Yeah, it should be a nice ROW-mance!”

“Lame!” Owen gave Mei a thumbs-down as the kayaks glided away from the dock, leaving ripples behind them.

Nobody spoke for several minutes as they paddled away from their little beach. Marcus took the lead, followed closely by Owen and Carl. The only sounds were the splashes called by the rhythmic paddling, the breeze through the pines, and the distant calls of birds and frogs somewhere across Labrador Pond.

Carl found kayaking surprisingly relaxing. He quickly got used to steering the kayak, maneuvering it almost as skillfully as Marcus and Owen. The beautiful water stretched out around them, reflecting the white clouds drifting overhead.

“Have you done a lot of kayaking?” Marcus asked Owen.

“Some,” Owen answered. “I’m from Maine; I’ve been to a few of the lakes in the area. Never Labrador Pond, though. What about you?”

“My parents bought a canoe when I was a kid,” Marcus answered. “There were a few nice areas near where I grew up.”

“What about you, Carl?” Owen asked. “What did you do for fun as a kid?”

“Museums, read about space exploration,” Carl responded with a nervous cough. “Nothing exciting. I think I got my first telescope before I could walk.”

“Hey, still sounds fun,” Owen stopped to take a picture of the large amount of lily pads in the area. “If you ask me, Amelia thinks your hobby is fascinating. I say go for it. She’s fucking hot.”

“Speaking of cute, what’s up with you and Mei?” Marcus asked.

“What? Nothing,” Owen frowned. “What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about the crush you both obviously have on each other,” Marcus chuckled. “Come on, man! You may as well pull her hair and push her down. Classic opposites attract; you run off without thinking, she plans everything.”

“I like to be spontaneous, so what?” Owen asked defensively.

“That’s the opposite of Mei,” Marcus explained. “I’ve noticed you two make jokes about each other more than anyone else. You’re teasing each other because you can’t vocalize your feelings.”

“‘Vocalize our feelings?’” Owen snorted.

“I did well on my SATs, shut up,” Marcus laughed. “And I’m not the one with a schoolyard crush.”

“Because I find her puns and her obsessive need to organize annoying? That means I like her?” Owen scoffed. “Let’s not forget her naming random inanimate objects.”

“Even I can tell you like her,” Carl spoke up, earning a cheer from Marcus.

“Let’s just find Pine Island,” Owen grumbled.

They continued through the pond, which Carl felt should really be called a lake based on its size. They rounded a bend while he started wondering what Sofia was saying to the other girls. He trusted her, but it was still nerve-wracking. Carl had plenty of crushes in the past, but he’d never been able to confess his feelings. He just knew they wouldn’t be reciprocated.

A great blue heron lifted its head from the reeds, its wings spreading as it took off. Owen quickly raised his camera, taking the shot as the bird glided low across the water. The graceful bird did a few turns as it climbed higher and higher, eventually disappearing behind some trees.

“Don’t fall in, that looks expensive,” Marcus commented.

“Worth the risk,” Owen sighed happily as he admired the shot.

As they made another turn around a copse of trees, they got their first look at Pine Island. The shoreline opened into a small crescent-shaped beach dotted with granite boulders. Several brightly-colored kayaks were already pulled onto the sand. Several college-aged adults were hanging out in small groups; some were fishing, others were chatting and laughing.

One guy noticed the new arrivals and raised a beer in greeting. “Hey! What college you guys from?”

“Boston University!” Marcus yelled back. “You?”

“Tufts!” the guy answered, gesturing to himself and the three other people with him.

They beached the three kayaks and stepped out onto Pine Island. Marcus was the center of attention almost immediately, and there were soon a couple of girls in bikinis hanging onto his every word. Owen was friendly as well, earning a few laughs as he told some jokes. Carl ran into another freshman who also seemed like the quiet type. The two got into a discussion about refractive indexes, losing themselves in a familiar topic.

Another group arrived at the island, all of them friendly and happy to mingle. They were students from the University of Southern Maine, and were thrilled to represent the school. One of the guys mentioned there was going to be bonfire at their place, inviting everyone present to come along. Marcus said all six of the Boston University students would be there.

Carl had never been invited to a party, and was both excited and nervous about going. Labrador Pond was starting to feel a lot bigger than their little home.

The guys took their time returning to the house, enjoying the slow trip through the pond. Taking a quick detour to an area with reeds, they spotted several snapping turtles swimming just beneath the surface. Owen got plenty of pictures as Carl noticed a small pink flower bud that was floating on the water. Carl immediately grabbed it before they resumed their journey.

When the house came into view, Carl noticed all three ladies were gathered on the dock. Leaning forward, he frowned as he tried to get a better look. He soon realized Sofia was standing in the middle holding onto the fishing rod. The other two women were clearly trying to help as the rod tip continued bending rapidly.

“Hey, the girls caught a fish!” Marcus chuckled.

“I can’t believe they tried fishing,” Owen observed, squinting to get a better look. “I think they might need help.”

“Help!” Sofia called out as the guys approached. “The stupid fish won’t spit out the fake worm!”

“His name’s Fred!” Mei added.

“The fish or the lure?” Owen yelled back.

“The fish, idiot!” Mei shouted.

“Okay, okay, what happened?” Marcus chuckled as he paddled up to the dock.

“I wanted to try casting,” Sofia grumbled. “I didn’t expect to catch a fish, now he won’t go away!”

Marcus skillfully got up onto the dock and accepted the fishing rod from Sofia. He reeled the fish in and freed the bass from the hook. Showing the fish to Sofia, she refused to kiss it and yelled at him to throw it back. Chuckling, Marcus tossed the large-mouth bass back into Labrador Pond.

“Bye Fred!” Mei waved.

“Is he okay?” Amelia asked nervously.

“Yes, but he’s never coming back,” Marcus deadpanned.

“Well, this will make a fun story,” Owen chuckled.

The guys beached the kayaks and greeted the girls with some teasing about their angling skills. Sofia proudly pointed out that she did manage to catch a fish. Sort of. Marcus also mentioned the party to the women, who all agreed it sounded like fun. The six of them continued relaxing in the backyard for a little while.

Carl eventually managed to catch Sofia alone while she sipped on a wine cooler. “H-hi.”

“Well, aren’t we nervous?” Sofia surveyed him over the rim of her sunglasses. “Worried I spilled all your secrets?”

“A little,” Carl winced.

“Don’t worry, I didn’t tell Amelia a boy like-likes her,” Sofia giggled. “I can’t give away confidential girl-club secrets, but we talked about a few things.”

“O-okay,” he looked at her in confusion.

“The main thing I told her that might help you is that it’s cool if the girl makes the first move sometimes,” she explained. “Amelia mentioned she never did that before. And don’t worry, I didn’t specifically mention you.”

“Thank you,” Carl let out a breath.

“But, you really should consider telling her how you feel if it comes up,” Sofia advised. “Who knows? Maybe some liquid courage at the party tonight will help?”

“I’ve never drank alcohol,” he explained immediately.

“Oh, this is gonna be fun,” Sofia laughed.

The group spent the rest of the morning and afternoon making the most of Labrador Pond. Mei insisted they complete as many passport challenges as possible. Owen claimed Mei was cheating when she stamped her Challenge Passport to indicate she had paddled to Pine Island. The two got into a small argument over the challenges being for the entire group, while Owen insisted there was a reason they each had their own passport.

They hiked a short trail, stopping often while Owen photographed wildflowers, dragonflies, and the occasional chipmunk. It was easy to stamp the entry for photographing five native wildlife species. Amelia was able to identify five native trees, completing another challenge.

“You know stars, I know trees,” Amelia giggled as she walked beside Carl.

Carl also gave Amelia the pink flower he had picked up, being sure to tell her that it was one that had fallen on its own. Sofia and Mei teased Carl slightly when he lost the ability to form words after Amelia had squealed and hugged him tightly. Marcus gave Carl a friendly punch on the shoulder.

Marcus convinced everyone to compete the challenge to skip rocks across the water. Owen managed four skips right away, while Marcus’ first attempt failed spectacularly. Carl was the winner with six skips. Amelia celebrated as if he’d just won the Super Bowl. Sofia gave him a knowing wink.

Dinner was very simple: hot dogs, potato salad, and fresh watermelon. By the time the sun began to disappear behind the trees, the passport booklets had quite a few fresh stamps. Carl realized vacation was about collecting multiple small moments that became unforgettable.

The music echoed across Labrador Pond long before the house came into view. Carl felt his heart rate increase with every step he took along the dirt road. When the group of six eventually reached the right house, they noticed it was similar to their own. The big difference? The house had a much larger backyard that ended at the water.

A large bonfire was already burning in the massive firepit near the shoreline. Several people were sitting in chairs and watching the fire. Music pumped out of a surprisingly loud portable speaker as students mingled and drank. A small group to the side were passing a joint around while discussing the meaning of life.

“You okay?” Sofia whispered quietly to Carl.

She was wearing a white sundress with bright yellow flowers that clung to her curves. Her dark hair framed her pretty face as she walked beside him.

Carl laughed nervously. “It’s a little overwhelming.”

“That’s the point!” Marcus clapped him on the shoulder.
