Carl Calderone stared at the blinking cursor on his computer’s writing program while trying to figure out what to type. His small bedroom was filled with half-empty coffee mugs, stacks of paper, and physics textbooks he had promised himself he’d organize before leaving for college. A poster of the night sky covered one wall, each constellation carefully labeled. Beside it was a standing telescope pointed toward the window and up at the sky.

Leaning back in his chair, Carl rubbed his eyes behind his thick glasses. He’d never been particularly skilled at writing. Math and science were his subjects. Numbers and equations made sense. If someone asked him to explain orbital mechanics or why prime numbers were fascinating, he could talk for hours. Ask him why he deserved a vacation? That was something else.

His parents had insisted he enter the ridiculous contest after seeing the advertisement online. They were worried Carl wouldn’t make any friends in college or that he’d even be bullied like he had been in high school. Carl had refused at first, but his parents said he had nothing to lose. Carl caved, knowing that no one ever actually won anything.

So, there he sat on a Saturday evening, typing on his computer while everyone else was out on dates or celebrating their upcoming graduation from high school. Carl glanced at the website for the contest again as he contemplated the prompt. Seven hundred fifty words on why a week at Labrador Pond would change his life.

Even if he didn’t really want to enter, Carl was still determined to produce his best work. That dedication was how he had managed to graduate valedictorian. While impressive, he was terrified of giving his speech. It had already been approved, but he was concerned people would make fun of him. They always did.

Running a hand through his brown hair, Carl let out a breath as he tried to think of some other achievement. He wasn’t an athlete or musician, he didn’t have any after-school activities. He was just Carl. A kid from Worcester, Massachusetts who loved physics and math. He spent Friday nights looking through a telescope, and had somehow survived four years of high school while trying his best to not be noticed.

Maybe that was the answer.

Carl’s fingers returned to the keyboard as he started typing. His essay spoke about spending years alone, staying quiet so he wouldn’t be made fun of. Then he was made fun of anyway. Carl knew he lacked a social life and was starting to worry he would never have one. Would he be thirty someday and still never have kissed a girl? Carl didn’t know. He just knew a week of socializing with fellow college students just might bring him out of his shell.

The essay was surprisingly emotional to write, and Carl was relieved when he was done. With his application filled out, he officially entered the Escape to Labrador Pond contest. He shook his head at how much effort he had put into the work that no one would ever read.

After all, no one ever won a publicity contest.
