Amelia and Carl sat at the edge of the dock as the sun rose over Labrador Pond. They were wearing pajamas and holding hands, Amelia’s blonde hair was messy, as if she had just woken up. Carl thought she looked adorable, and he couldn’t pull his eyes away from the cute freckles on her nose. Their feet dangled over the edge, toes brushing the cold water.

“Do you remember the first time we were on this dock together?” Amelia asked as she squeezed his hand.

“Like it was six days ago,” Carl chuckled, his thumb caressing her soft skin.

“You were so shy and nervous,” she told him. “Look at you now.”

“I think I’m still shy, just not around you,” he smiled. “I remember you telling me about collecting pressed leaves.”

“Mm, I also told you I wanted to watch the sunrise,” Amelia grinned as they watched together.

“You also mentioned your parents also wanting you to be good at everything,” Carl added.

“Yes,” she nodded. “They freak out if I get an A minus. It was nice spending a week with people who just wanted me to be me.”

“I hope we’ll all stick together at BU,” he replied quietly.

“I’m sure we will,” she nodded firmly. “Now, let’s go get breakfast before Marcus eats everything.”

Sofia and Marcus were already awake, sitting at the table while eating breakfast and drinking coffee. Marcus was getting teased about bringing two coeds into his room; they had apparently gone back to their place less than an hour previously. Carl and Amelia made their own breakfasts and joined their friends at the table.

Partway through Marcus devouring everything, the four of them were joined by the last two members of the group: Mei and Owen. Mei had a small smile on her face as she practically skipped over to the coffee pot. She was wearing a long shirt that belonged to Owen and left her legs bare.

“Well, hello there,” Sofia smirked. “Did you two have a nice night?”

“We did, yes,” Owen cleared his throat.

“You know what they say,” Mei began cheekily as she poured herself a cup of coffee, “a man’s shirt on the female form is like the flag on a conquered fortress.”

“Mei!” Amelia gasped and giggled.

“Mei and I decided to start seeing each other,” Owen explained.

“Did everyone besides me get lucky last night?” Sofia asked with an eye roll.

“Yes,” five voices replied.

The house was unusually quiet after Saturday breakfast. The buzzing conversation that had echoed through the house all week had been replaced by people rushing around the house for their personal items. It was the last day and everyone was packing for the trip back to Boston University.

Carl was standing alone in his bedroom, his open suitcase resting on his bed. Just six days ago it had been a strange room in a strange place. Now it felt tough to leave. Picking up his Challenge Passport, Carl smiled at it before placing it in his tote and packing both in his suitcase.

Next came a few of the souvenirs he’d gotten during the week. A postcard he’d gotten at the grocery store, a small pine cone he’d picked up during the scavenger hunt, and a pressed leaf Amelia had helped him with. They were tiny things that would be meaningless to anyone else. They meant a lot to him. He would look at that leaf and remember; just like Amelia did.

A knock came at the door. “You decent?”

Carl looked up. “Yeah.”

“Just about ready?” Marcus asked as he leaned against the frame.

“Almost,” Carl replied.

“It’s tough to be leaving,” Marcus said as he stepped inside. “You remember how nervous you were on the bus?”

“Yes,” Carl groaned.

“You didn’t look anyone in the eye,” Marcus continued. “You thought no one would like you.”

“I really did,” Carl admitted with a nod.

“You were wrong,” Marcus folded his arms. “And you even have an amazing girlfriend.”

“I know,” Carl grinned.

Marcus stepped forward and pulled Carl into a quick hug. “Don’t be a stranger when classes start.”

“I won’t, I promise,” Carl smiled.

“You’re stuck with us.”

Suitcases were moved near the front door as everyone finished packing. Board games had been returned to their shelves, the kitchen counters were spotless, and the cabinets had been emptied. Sofia and Mei both had their suitcases open in the living room; Sofia’s was overstuffed and Mei was making sure hers was organized.

“This all fit when I packed to come here,” Sofia frowned. “I must have put everything in a different way.”

“What kind of crazy person would do something like that?” Mei frowned.

“We don’t all pack three pairs of underwear for each day we’ll be away,” Owen teased as he walked up to Mei.

“Two pairs per day,” Mei rolled her eyes. “One for normal wear and one in case I poop my pants.”

“Has that ever happened?” Owen asked.

“Well, no,” Mei admitted. “But, but! Food poisoning is a thing.”

“Normally, I’d be happy to talk about your underwear,” Owen sighed.
