Oliver is silent for a long moment. “Why? Why couldn’t you just be happy? Why couldn’t you just be normal?”

Oliver paces the garden, his hands running through his hair. “You abandoned us. You abandoned Mom. You abandoned Sophie. You abandoned me.”

Oliver kneels beside his father. “I forgive you, Dad. I forgive you.”
Stone reaches out and hugs his son. Oliver stiffens at first, then relaxes into the embrace. Tears are streaming down both their faces.
“I love you, Oliver,” Stone whispers. “I’ve always loved you. I’ll always love you.”
“I love you too, Dad,” Oliver says. “I don’t understand it. But I love you.”
They stay like that for a long moment, father and son, broken but healing. I watch from the doorway, feeling a surge of emotion.
