The morning I find Lily arrives with the kind of electric anticipation that makes your skin tingle and your heart race. I’ve been searching for her for years. Following leads that always went cold. Investigating rumors that always turned out to be false. And then, finally, I found her.
You’re probably wondering why I’ve been so obsessed with finding her. Why I’ve spent years of my life tracking down a woman I barely remember. The answer is simple: she’s my father’s legacy. She’s proof that what he built was real. She’s the missing piece of my family’s history.
The information comes from an old contact in the Paradigm’s underground network. Lily is alive. She’s owned by a family in the South, a wealthy clan who’ve kept her hidden for decades. She’s in her late fifties now, older and worn, but she’s still Lily. Still my father’s treasure. Still the woman who taught me what love could be.
I make the journey to the South, Lexi and Stone at my side. The drive is long, the roads winding through unfamiliar territory. Lexi sits beside me, completely naked, her collar gleaming. Stone kneels at my feet, his body on display.
“Are you nervous, Mistress?” Lexi asks.
I look at her, at her naked body, at her scars. “Yes. I’m nervous. I’ve been searching for her for so long. What if she doesn’t remember me? What if she doesn’t want to come home?”
Lexi takes my hand. “She’ll remember you, Mistress. And she’ll want to come home. I know she will.”
I squeeze her hand. “I hope so. I hope so.”
The family who owns Lily lives in a sprawling estate, similar to my own but older, more worn. The patriarch, a man named Mr. Harrison, greets me at the door. He’s in his seventies, his face lined with age, his eyes suspicious.
“Ms. Copeland,” he says. “I’ve heard about you. About your family. About the Paradigm.”
“Then you know why I’m here, Mr. Harrison. I’ve come for Lily.”
He stares at me, his face hard. “She’s been with us for decades. She’s a loyal pet. A devoted companion. I’m not sure I want to sell her.”
I smile. “I’m not asking you to sell her, Mr. Harrison. I’m offering you a price you can’t refuse.”
I name the figure. His eyes widened. It’s more money than he could ever imagine. More money than his estate is worth.
He’s silent for a long moment. Then he says, “She’s in the back. I’ll take you to her.”
Lily is in a small room at the back of the house. She’s old now—her hair is gray, her skin is wrinkled, her body is marked by decades of service. She’s completely naked, a simple collar around her neck.
She kneels when we enter, her head bowed.
“Lily,” Mr. Harrison says. “This woman has come for you. She wants to take you home.”
Lily looks up. Her eyes meet mine. And then she starts to cry.
“Ruth,” she whispers. “Little Ruth. You’ve grown so much.”
I fell to my knees before her. “Lily. I’ve found you. I’ve finally found you.”
She takes my face in her hands. “You look so much like your father. So much like Edward.”
I start to cry. “I’ve come to take you home. To bring you back to the estate. To finish what he started.”
She nods, tears streaming down her face. “Yes. Yes, I want to go home. I’ve been waiting for this my whole life.”
The paperwork is signed. The money is transferred. Lily is mine.
I take her back to the estate. She’s quiet during the journey, her eyes fixed on the passing landscape.
“It’s so different,” she whispers. “Everything has changed.”
“Some things haven’t,” I say. “The estate is still there. The library is still there. Everything is just as Father left it.”
She looks at me, tears in her eyes. “He left it for me?”
“He left everything for you. He never stopped loving you. He died of a broken heart.”
She’s silent for a long moment.
“I knew,” she says finally. “I knew he would never recover. I knew he would never be whole again.”
She looks out the window.
“Your mother hated me. She hated me from the moment I arrived. She saw me as a threat. She saw me as competition. She couldn’t understand that I was never trying to take her place. I was only trying to belong.”
I take her hand. “I know. I understand.”
“You do?”
“Yes. Because I’m the same. I’ve found my own pet. I’ve found my own belonging. I’ve found my own freedom.”
She looks at me, her eyes full of love. “Your father would be so proud of you.”
We arrived at the estate. Lily steps out of the car and looks at the house. She’s trembling.
“I never thought I’d see this place again,” she says. “I never thought I’d come home.”
I take her hand. “You’re home now, Lily. You’re home forever.”
I led her through the house. She walks slowly, taking in everything—the paintings, the furniture, the memories.
She stops at the library door. “May I?”
“Of course.”
She walks inside. She looks around the room, her eyes filling with tears.
“This was his favorite room,” she says. “He used to read to me here. He used to hold me here. He used to love me here.”
She kneels in the center of the room, her hands on the floor.
“I’m home,” she whispers. “I’m finally home.”
I kneel beside her.
