The morning after Marcus’s broadcast, the world has changed. The Copeland estate is surrounded by reporters, protesters, and curious onlookers. The gates are locked, the security is doubled, but nothing can keep out the noise. I stand at the window of my study, looking down at the chaos below. Lexi kneels at my feet, her hand on my ankle. Stone is in his quarters, still weak from the surgery, but already beginning to understand his new life.

You’re probably wondering how I feel about all this attention. Whether I’m overwhelmed or terrified or secretly thrilled. The answer is all of the above. But mostly, I’m exhilarated. This is what I’ve been waiting for. This is the moment my father dreamed of. The moment the world finally sees the truth about the Paradigm.

“Ruth, what’s going to happen?” Lexi asks, her voice soft.

I turn to look at her. She’s beautiful, nude and collared, her body a testament to her choice. “Everything is going to change. The world is finally seeing the truth about the Paradigm. They’re going to fight us. They’re going to try to destroy us. But we’re not going to let them.”

I kneel beside her and take her face in my hands. “We’re going to win, Lexi. We’re going to show them that surrender is freedom. That belonging is strength. That being seen is the most beautiful thing in the world.”

She nods, tears streaming down her face. “I believe you. I believe in you.”

Stone’s former network is holding a press conference, denouncing his actions. I watch on the small television in his quarters, his body still recovering from the surgery.

“Marcus Stone has betrayed the trust of our viewers,” the network president says, his face grave. “He has abandoned his journalistic integrity and embraced a dangerous cult. We condemn his actions and have terminated his employment effective immediately.”

Stone watches the screen, his face pale. “They don’t understand. They can’t understand.”

I kneel beside him. “I know, Stone. I know. But you don’t need their understanding. You need only one thing. Peace. And you’ve found it.”

He looks at me, his eyes filled with tears. “Have I? Have I really found it?”

I take his face in my hands. “Yes, Stone. You have. You’ve found belonging. You’ve found purpose. You’ve found freedom. And nothing—not your former network, not your family, not the entire world—can take that away from you.”

He nods, tears streaming down his face. “Thank you, Mistress. Thank you for everything.”

I kiss his forehead. “You’re welcome, Stone. You’re my treasure. My belongings. My freedom.”

Rebecca Stone is on every news channel, her face twisted with grief and rage. She’s giving interviews, telling the world about her husband’s betrayal.

“I don’t understand what happened,” she says, her voice trembling. “Marcus was a good man. A loving father. A devoted husband. And then he became obsessed with this ... this cult. He abandoned us. He abandoned everything.”

I watch her on the screen, feeling a strange mixture of pity and annoyance. She doesn’t understand. She can’t understand. She sees the Paradigm as a cult, an abuse, a perversion. She can’t see that her husband finally found what he’d been searching for his whole life.

But I also feel pity. She’s lost her husband. Her family is broken. Her life is in ruins.

I think about my mother, who lost my father to the same grief. Who destroyed something beautiful because she couldn’t understand it.

I won’t make the same mistake.

I pick up my phone and dial Rebecca’s number.

She answers, her voice cold. “Who is this?”

“This is Ruth Copeland.”

Silence. Then: “What do you want?”

“I want to help you understand. I want to help you see what Marcus saw. I want to help you find peace.”

“I don’t want your help. I don’t want anything from you.”

I pause. “Rebecca, I know you’re hurting. I know you’re angry. But Marcus made a choice. A choice that was right for him. You don’t have to understand it. You don’t have to accept it. But you should know that he’s at peace. He’s finally at peace.”

She hangs up.

Oliver refuses to speak to his father. I’ve called him a dozen times, but he won’t answer. I’ve sent messages, but he won’t respond. He’s ashamed, humiliated. He’s being bullied at school.

Stone kneels in his quarters, tears streaming down his face. “I destroyed my son. I destroyed my family.”
