His father's death left him hungry for something he can't name. Control. Power. Meaning. The train to Berlin was half full when we boarded. Lena took the seat across from me without saying much. She folded her coat on the empty space beside her and opened a book. Outside the window the land was flat and grey. Small towns passed. Fields. Then more fields.

I watched her for a while. She did not look up. Her face was calm, the same controlled expression she wore most of the time. I took out my phone and typed a single message.

Ninety minutes. No phone. No speaking unless I ask. Stay exactly where you are.

I sent it and placed the phone face down on my thigh.

She read the message. Her eyes came up and met mine. For a few seconds she only looked at me. Then she locked the screen, set the phone beside her book, and folded her hands in her lap. She did not argue. She did not smile. She simply accepted it.

The carriage stayed quiet. A man near the doors scrolled through his phone. Two women spoke in low voices further down the aisle. A student slept with his hoodie pulled over his eyes. No one paid us any attention.

I sat back and watched her.

The first twenty minutes passed slowly. She kept her eyes on the open book, but she was not reading. Her shoulders remained still. Every now and then her fingers moved slightly against each other. I said nothing. I wanted her to feel the weight of the time we had agreed to.

My body was already reacting. Sitting across from her, knowing she could not speak or reach for her phone, knowing she was holding herself in place because I asked, made the need settle low and heavy. I did not shift in my seat. I just let the feeling stay.

After some time I picked up the phone and sent another message.

Are you thinking about the library?

She glanced down, read it, then looked back at me. She gave a small nod. That was all.

I put the phone away again.

Rain started to hit the windows. The drops ran sideways with the speed of the train. I watched them for a while, then looked back at her. She had closed the book. Her hands were still in her lap. Her knees were slightly apart. I typed again.

Keep your knees together.

She read the message. Her eyes flicked up to mine. Then she adjusted her position and pressed her knees together. The movement was small and precise. I saw it clearly.

The minutes continued to move. Ordinary life went on around us. The conductor came through and checked tickets. A child cried once and was quickly quieted by its mother. Someone opened a packet of crisps. Lena remained exactly where she was. She did not reach for her phone. She did not speak. She only waited.

I used the time to study her. The way her breathing stayed even. The small tension in her jaw. The fact that she had chosen to follow the instruction without needing an explanation. That choice sat between us more strongly than any touch could have.

When we were about thirty minutes from Berlin I sent one last message.

When we arrive you will follow me. No questions.

She read it and nodded once.

By the time the train began to slow, my body was tight with restraint. I had not touched her. I had barely spoken. Yet the air between us felt thick. The announcement for Berlin Hauptbahnhof came over the speakers. Lena closed her book, put on her coat, and stood when I stood. She stayed half a step behind me as we left the train.

The station was busy. People moved in every direction with bags and coffee. I walked through the crowd without looking back. I knew she was there. We took the escalator down, then the short walk to a small hotel I had booked that morning. Nothing special. Just a clean room with a door that locked properly.

The lift was empty. The corridor on the third floor was quiet. I opened the door and let her walk in first. She stopped in the middle of the room and turned to face me. I closed the door and turned the lock.

For a moment neither of us spoke.

“You can talk now,” I said.

“How long did you plan that?” Her voice was steady, but lower than usual.

“Since this morning.”

“You didn’t ask if I would agree.”

“You agreed when you locked your phone.”

She was silent for a few seconds. Then she took off her coat and laid it over the chair. Underneath she wore a dark sweater and black trousers. She sat on the edge of the bed and looked at me.

“Come here,” I said.

She did not move immediately. She held my gaze, still measuring. Then she stood and walked toward me.
