His father's death left him hungry for something he can't name. Control. Power. Meaning. When his aunt places a leather-bound journal in his hands on the night before his departure, she gives him more than notes on psychology and leverage. She gives him a key to who he could become.

I was in the kitchen of my small student flat when the knock came.

It was not a soft knock. It was firm, three times, the kind that already knew you were inside. I wiped my hands and opened the door.

Auntie Funke stood there with a small travel bag at her feet. She looked the same as she did in Lagos — neat, sharp-eyed, and slightly impatient. Forty-one years old, but she carried herself like someone who did not waste time.

“Good afternoon,” she said.

I stared at her for a second too long. “Auntie ... what are you doing here?”

“I came to see you.” She walked past me into the flat without waiting for an invitation. Her eyes moved around the small sitting area, the tiny kitchen, the door that led to my bedroom. “So this is where they put you.”

“How did you even get this address?”

“Your mother. And your cousin who lives in Köln. I am staying with her for a few days.” She put her bag down. “Make tea.”

I made the tea. My hands were not steady. I had not expected anyone from home so soon. The journal was in the drawer of my desk. I kept thinking about it while the kettle boiled.

We sat at the small table. She held her cup with both hands and looked at me over the rim.

“You look thinner,” she said.

“The food is different.”

“Hmm.” She drank a little. “Your mother is worried. She says you don’t call enough.”

“I call.”

“Not enough for her.” She set the cup down. “But I did not come here because of your mother.”

The flat suddenly felt smaller.

“I know what my sister gave you,” she said. Her voice stayed calm. “The journal. I want to know if you understood any of it.”

I did not answer immediately. Outside, a car passed. Someone laughed on the floor below.

“She told you?” I asked.

“We talk. Not about everything, but enough.” She leaned back in the chair. “Adewale does not give that book to just anyone. She gave it to you the night before you left. That means she saw something. I came to see if she was right.”

“And if she was wrong?”

“Then I will tell her.”

The way she said it was simple. No threat in the voice, but the weight was there.

I had planned to meet Lena that evening. We were supposed to walk by the canal and talk. I had been looking forward to it more than I wanted to admit. Now Auntie Funke was sitting in my flat, and I already knew the evening was gone.

“I have somewhere to be later,” I said.

“Cancel it.”

“Auntie—”

“Cancel it, Tolu.” She did not raise her voice. “I did not travel all this way for you to run off to some girl.”

I took out my phone. My thumb hovered over Lena’s name. I typed a short message: Something came up. Family. Can we move it?

I sent it. The reply came after a few minutes. Alright. Another time.
