The roads turned bad before we reached the turn-off.
Snow had been falling since afternoon. By the time the cabin appeared the track was half covered and the car kept sliding. I parked as close as I could. We carried the bags through the cold. The cabin was small — one main room with a fireplace, a narrow kitchen, and a bedroom with a wide bed. No neighbours. No phone signal. The kind of place that removed every easy exit.
Lena set her bag near the window. Sophie dropped hers by the door and went straight to the fireplace. The air inside was cold enough to show our breath.
“I’ll get wood,” I said.
Neither answered. I went back out into the snow.
When I returned with the first load the door was only half closed. Their voices reached me clearly.
Sophie’s voice came first.
“I don’t want to compete with you. I’m tired of that version of myself.”
Lena answered after a short pause.
“I’m not interested in competing either. But I also won’t pretend I didn’t see what happened in the loft. Or how easily he keeps pieces of his life in different rooms.”
“So what do you actually want from him?”
“Presence. Not performance. What about you?”
Sophie was quieter this time.
“Something that doesn’t disappear when I get difficult. And I don’t want to use him to run from my own head anymore. That’s all I know right now.”
I waited a few seconds, then pushed the door open with my shoulder. Both women looked at me. The conversation stopped cleanly. I carried the wood to the fireplace and started the fire without commenting. The silence that followed was full of what they had just said to each other.
By the time the fire was burning properly the cabin had begun to warm. We ate the simple food we had brought. Conversation stayed light on the surface. Underneath, the loft, the festival, Sophie’s confession, and Lena’s earlier questions all sat in the room with us.
Night came early because of the snow.
After we cleared the plates I stayed by the fire. Lena sat in the chair near the window. Sophie sat on the rug with her back against the low table.
I looked at both of them.
“Before anything else happens tonight, I need to know what each of you actually wants. Not what you think I expect.”
Sophie raised an eyebrow.
“That’s new.”
“It needs to be.”
Lena spoke first.
“I don’t want a competitive dynamic. If Sophie needs intensity, that is hers. I will join only if I choose to, and I may leave the room without explaining myself. I don’t want that treated as a problem.”
I nodded.
Sophie was quieter than usual.
“I want intensity. But I might stop without warning. If I do, I need it to be accepted. No pushing. No trying to pull me back into it.”
“All right.”
“And you?” Sophie asked me.
“I want to stop managing the temperature of every room. If that means nothing happens tonight, that is fine.”
Sophie studied me for a long moment, then looked at Lena. Something unspoken passed between them — the continuation of the conversation I had interrupted earlier.
