The conference hall in Munich smelled of coffee and new carpet. People stood in tight groups with name tags on their chests, smiling too widely and speaking too fast. I moved through them with a plate of untouched sandwiches in my hand, trying to look like I belonged.
I had only come because my supervisor insisted. “Good for visibility,” he said. I was still learning what that word meant in this country.
That was when I saw her.
Clara stood near the tall windows with two men in expensive suits. She was twenty-seven, tall, and carried herself like the room already belonged to her. Dark hair pulled back. Simple black dress. No loud jewellery. She did not need it. Even from a distance I could tell she was bored. Her eyes moved across the crowd with the mild interest of someone who had seen better.
One of the organisers noticed me standing alone and steered me toward her group like he was doing me a favour.
“Clara, this is Tolu. One of our scholarship students from Nigeria. Very bright.”
Clara looked at me. The two men looked at me. The organiser smiled, proud of his introduction.
I offered my hand. “Good afternoon.”
She shook it once, lightly, and let go.
“Scholarship student,” she said. Her English was perfect, slightly cool. “How lovely.”
One of the men chuckled. The other sipped his drink and watched.
I tried to keep the conversation normal. I mentioned the panel I had attended that morning. I asked a polite question about her work. She answered in short sentences. Then she looked at her colleagues and gave a small smile that did not reach her eyes.
“He’s very eager,” she said, as if I was not standing there. “They always are at the beginning.”
The organiser laughed awkwardly. The two men smiled.
Clara turned back to me.
“You’re too young,” she said, still pleasant. “Too eager. Come back when you’ve built something that isn’t a scholarship story.”
The words landed cleanly in front of everyone. No raised voice. No open insult. Just a calm dismissal that made the space around us go quiet for a second.
I felt heat rise in my neck. My first instinct was to defend myself, to list the things I had already done, to show her I was more than the word “scholarship.” I swallowed it. Reacting would only make the moment worse. I kept my face steady.
“I’ll keep that in mind,” I said.
She nodded once, as if the conversation had reached its natural end, and turned back to the men. The organiser gave me a tight smile and steered the talk elsewhere. I stepped away with my plate still in my hand.
I walked to the far side of the hall and put the plate down on a table. My ears were hot. A few people nearby had heard. I could feel their eyes. I forced myself to stand still for a full minute before I moved again. I did not look in her direction for the rest of the afternoon.
That night in the hotel I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the wall. The rejection sat in my chest like a stone. It was not the first time someone had looked down on me, but the public nature of it made it sharper. She had done it casually, in front of others, as if my presence was a mild inconvenience.
I opened the journal that night and read a page about pride. Then I closed it again.
I stopped looking for her after that.
