“Jim, I appreciate your coming by and helping me with my latest challenge. I admit this isn’t what you probably expected, and I feel very awkward addressing this, but it’s about time my eyes were opened.”

“Okay, I’m not sure where this is going, but I have no other plans for today and love to help whenever I’m able.”

“I’ve been spending a lot of time with Heather, lately, and she’s helped me see how I’ve gone through life with horse blinders on. I want to take them off and see reality. She pointed out how I’ve projected my perspective onto others, limiting my opportunities and ability to find joy in the ones I did allow. We’ve all been indoctrinated by society and our upbringing. The results of our experiences seem to complete our view of everything else. The longer we hold onto this view, the more rigid it becomes, preventing us from seeing anything other than our filtered view. This is just based on what we expect to see. I want to finally see and understand a man’s perspective.”

“I admit my guard has gone up. I’ve heard women ask my perspective in the past, but it generally results in overreactions or criticism when what I say differs from what they want to hear. I’ve become gun shy, as no one wants to be attacked for their own beliefs and preferences. Saying you want to hear and actually taking the time to understand are two different things. I have no problem sharing my perspective, but maybe this would work better if you told me up front what you want to hear.”

“I understand your hesitancy, as I’m aware how people (including myself) have been unwilling to hear differing perspectives. I want to change that, but I’m still new at this, so I may need a gentle reminder when I’m hearing my projection and not what you’re actually saying, or if I judge what I’m hearing without taking time to learn how your perspective impacts you. You may see me as Lucy promising to let Charlie Brown kick the football. I’m not saying I won’t stumble and revert back to old patterns, but I truly would appreciate your help to break this pattern. I don’t want to tell you what I want to hear; I want to hear what you are actually feeling. It’s not up to me to determine what you should feel, and it’s not my place to judge what you feel. Please help me.”

“Sarah, I’ll help you, but understand I’ll be very cautious to start. It’s been decades since I’ve openly shared my true feelings. I’ve learned it is safer to wait to be invited in rather than take the chance of guessing wrong. I can freely address any topic, once the topic and direction are defined. Once I feel safe, I’ll be an active participant. Please be patient and not rush my trust. If I’m dragging my feet, reach out for clarification rather than apply pressure. I need proof of being safe (in actions, not just words) before I’ll allow myself to be vulnerable and initiate.”

“Jim, I’d love to see and understand the impact relationships have on you. Unfortunately, I’ve spent my life measuring everything against what I was led to believe should be, preventing me from discovering what is actually ideal for me. I’m not sure if I was uncomfortable with past experiences because of how they impacted me or how they measured up to what I believed was supposed to be. Maybe if I understand your view of relationships and how they impact you, it might help me get a clearer picture of my own possibilities. I believe my life of disappointment was largely something of my own making, and I want to find a different path to take. When you think of relationships, what do you believe make them work for you?”
