“So how was your garden day?” asked Heather.

“I’m still trying to get my head around it. I’ve never felt this type of connection before, and I don’t know what to make of it. I can’t tell if it was real or if I was just projecting a fantasy buried beneath decades of disappointments. I know I need to get my feet back on the ground and get back to reality. I won’t allow myself to trust and be hurt again ... but it sure felt nice.”

“Sarah, you’re real, so you know the possibility of someone like you is also real. I understand the probability won’t be high, but, do you really want to close the door before you discover the actual truth? I’m not telling you to throw caution to the wind and ignore your inner warnings. I’ve known both you and Jim for many years, and I can tell what I believe is real. I don’t want you to rush anything, but I believe you’d like to see where this opportunity can take you.”

“What’s the likelihood of not being hurt again?”

“What’s the likelihood of finding out, if you pass on this opportunity? The key is not avoiding taking chances but learning to read the signs accurately, based on past knowledge you’ve acquired through experience. Chances are, when you look back at past hurts, you saw advanced signs you ignored or didn’t know how to read. Look at those signs and likely results.”

“I was lied to, I was taken advantage of and I was cheated on.”

“Let’s look at each and see what we can learn. What might be the reasons someone would lie?”

“People lie when they have ulterior motives, the consequences of truth aren’t clear, or they feel you don’t care enough to hear them accurately.”

“Let’s look at your situations. Was clear communication freely shared between you and these other guys? Did you show an interest in hearing and understanding their perspective? Did you ever overreact when you heard something you didn’t want to hear? Did your partners’ actions show you they felt safe being open and honest? If not, how did you address their safety concerns?”

“I guess I’m not a great communicator. I figured they’d just tell me if I had a need to know, though I guess I may not have been clear regarding what I needed to know. I can’t expect a partner to communicate well if I’m not modeling what I’d like to see. Maybe I would have seen signs of ulterior motives had I communicated more effectively. This is something within my control, so I want to work on improving my communication skills rather than just expect others to do all the work.”

“How were you taken advantage of?”

“I was used for money, sex and general household chores.”

“What signs did you see after the fact that you didn’t see while they were happening?”

“I tend to be very trusting, so I continued to lend money when it wasn’t being repaid as agreed upon. I guess I need to make decisions based on a person’s patterns rather than on what I want or expect to see. Expecting others to change their patterns has only led to disappointment and frustration for me. It would probably be in my best interest to limit any lending to small amounts, so I can see whether people can be trusted. Also, I need to make sure I understand the reasons a person wants or needs money and determine whether lending is in the best interest of the relationship.

I used to be very needy for attention, so I put a lot of value in any attention I got, even if only while having sex. I need a partner who is consistently attentive in all areas, not just when he has physical needs to be met. Consistent doesn’t mean constant. I just appreciate a regular pattern. I won’t have a partner who has his way with me and then ignores me or treats me poorly. I have become very self-sufficient, so I don’t want someone to be overly involved in my life, but I like knowing I am noticed, desired and appreciated. I just need to determine how much attention is the right amount for me.

I need to feel a partnership exists, where we both equally help to achieve our common goals, while showing caring for each other’s individual goals. I understand we each may be more adept at or have interest in certain things, but I no longer am willing to accept an imbalance. I will not be treated as a slave.”

“Sarah, you say you were cheated on. Can you say you didn’t see any prior warning signs? What did you do when you saw these signs?”
